Gentlemen, i figured this would be a good year ending post so here goes. It's been a pretty great year for gaming and would like to know everyone's favorite games of 08 :) For me i have been pleasantly surprised by some and a little underwhelmed by others but the following are my picks for 08:

in no particular order:

MGS4: Masterpiece of gaming, a great blend of action and cinematics, epic.

GTA4: I've played since it was released. great game and pulling off a water rescue in a chopper is priceless :)

Dead Space: Totally blown away, graphics, story, action. Fantastic game.

GT5:P: Come on..that's a given.

COD:WAW: Another game that was much better than i expected, excellent gameplay and very realsitic combat plus who can go wrong with nazi zombies :)

Well that's my list, happy holidays to all and may 09 bring you happiness and health :)

As in what I play?

CoD5 (WaW) and LBP (Tie for me, but LBP will last longer)

Then RB2 and GH4 (I like RB2's UI and Gameplay, but GH4's song list is just better, IMO)

And from what I've heard, MGS4 is good too.

From,
Chris.

GT5P: Just an awesome game, what else can be said.

GTA IV: Hours of fun on this, by far the best GTA game.

Race Driver GRID: Fun car game but not realistic. But the crashes are awesome/

MGS4. Without a doubt. Awesome story, graphics, game play, action and character control. Easy to play, but also challenging. Just an all around fun and emotional thrill ride!

But, I haven't played that many games. Didn't much care for GT5P. Bioshock had a great story, but the game play was boring. Uncharted had a great story but horrible game play mechanics for my tastes, which made it very frustrating at times. Burnout Paradise is fun, but I get sick sometimes, so that's a no. In fact, I don't think I'll play it again. At least not for a while. I wasn't that great at it, anyway.

Fallout 3: bought the lunchbox. Enjoyed it up to the ending. Best played on the PC.

WipEout HD: Great deal for $20. Has me hooked unlike NFS: ProStreet.

Rock Band 2: Rock Band 1 with all the bugs ironed out. One of the best party games.

LittleBigPlanet: I was overwhelmed by the game. Not drinking Sony Kool-Aid either, since I thought it was merely a cutesy platformer for $60. I didn't know what the big fuss was about until I started playing the community maps online. Then hilarity ensued.

We were playing some Legend of Zelda map. Someone's little brother punted the star that we needed into a fiery pit. Then someone else pushed and followed the makeshift bridge into the chasm. Then yet another person did a wheelie with the trampoline cart.

My favourite games of 2008...

Burnout Paradise This game is phenomenal, hard to believe it was bought out January of 2008. The developer support to the game is also fantastic, we've had bikes added to the game, day and night cycle, new cars, custom music, trophies, more online events and they planning to give a new piece of land soon too! It's more developer support than any other game I've ever played. It is the only game, apart from Motorstorm: PC, that I have played which uses all of the PS3's main features. It uses the online mode which is hugely awesome, trophies, custom soundtrack and most other features. It's a great game, I'd probably call it my game of the year 2008, but there are other games which have impressed me.

Race Driver GRID Despite what others have said, I found it a fun game to play. I didn't care that it was arcadey and not really a follow up to TOCA 3. Which admitidly it isn't. Race Driver GRID is the start of essentially a new series of games, the game has appealed to a wider audience rather than the minority who like sim based games. Race Driver GRID is a exciting game to play, most races that I did were action packed and the AI certainly put up a good fight so much so, I still haven't completed it. The range of vehicles on it is fantastic, also the whole way the game runs is impressive. You buy cars for your races, which in turn get liveried up with your team colours, you buy sponsors which pay you depending on what position you get, as an example; I have Bang & Oulsfen sponsor on my team which pay me £100,000 per race win. Race Driver GRID works as a fun game, a sim racer it is not, but it is more importantly fun.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift Although I've had this game only 4 days, I already feel as though this game deserves a place in this list. Lets start with the basics, the graphic are phenomenal out of all the games I've mentioned this has the best graphics. The gameplay is fun too, notice a theme with this list at the moment? Every race I've been in has been exciting right down to the finish line. Online mode is something I've not ventured into yet but plan to during the next few days. Splitscreen is amazing, the graphics do not change and the racing is just as action packed with AI racers filling in the places to fill up the grid. I'm not going to drag on about this game too much, as I feel I've already done this in the Motorstorm Pacific Rift - The Official Thread.

************

You may notice that my list is a bit lacking of anything other than driving games. And you'd be right, to be honest I haven't found a FPS that I think actually deserves to be on this list apart from maybe CoD4, as I got it February time, but that came out officially last year. Also, no GT5P I don't think this game does deserve a place, it's a good game but due to lack of developer support and actually keeping the game fresh and intresting means that I put it down after playing it for a couple of weeks. I haven't put Burnout down properly (I keep coming back to it still) since we got it in January. Criterion seem to know how to keep people coming back to their game unlike PD.

This year was also the year where I started renting games thanks to Tesco DVD/Game rental. This means I've tried many more games, I'm yet to play LBP which is probably another game which could have appeared on this list. I've had the chance to try Mercenaries 2, which despite what reviewers have said is actually alright. I've also rented CoD:WAW and seen how much of a cover it is of the original CoD4. It's just got a new story line and a couple new features. It isn't a follow up its just been tweaked a little. Next year looks to be intresting, with games such as Tom Clancy's HAWX coming out and hopefully some other good games.

Let's hope that next year will be Sony's year.

MGS4 goes straight in for me, no shadow of a doubt this game wowed me the most and kept me glued to my control for a long time, an absolute masterpiece for an MGS fan like me.

COD(s) both of them, I only got 4 this year and wasn't long ago that I bought WaW. Although I haven't played either recently due to other games, they've given me some great moments (the jumping off a 2-3 story high bridge and knifing someone in the top of their head ) and it's just so damn addictive once you get into it.

GTAIV a story I really enjoyed and has provided some more great moments, playing online with my russian pal has always been a great time. Playing cop online is rather fun (not cops and robbers, free mode with melee weapons on) and chasing down those rowdy lunatics you find on free mode now they're stuck with a bat whereas you have the cop car acquired shotgun . We treat it like a real cop situation though and only fire upon the criminal themself if they make an attempt to harm one of our good officers.

Last but not least GT5P, sure it's not perfect, sure the online is stumped, the AI pretty useless, but one things for sure. I still love this game, I love the physics, the fantastic visuals, the cars (mostly ;)) and I couldn't ask for more from a Prologue.

MGS4 I thourghly enjoyed. GT5:P is without doubt my most played game and well worth it considering it was half the price of other games. I wouldn't my title to COD4 given that I played it hours on end during the first quarter of 2008 but technically it doesn't count I suppose.

So, my game of 2008 is err. I'm not actually sure, it would be my bias towards racing games which has allowed me to get so much out of GT5:P, had I been a fan of say tactical stealth espionage games I wouldn't have hesitated to give MGS4 the nod, it really is a spectacular game. :p

Wow. That name's a blast from the past 👍

GTA = Grand Theft Auto; COD = Call of Duty; COD:WaW = Call of Duty: World At War; MGS = Metal Gear Solid; RB/GH = Rock Band/Guitar Hero; GT5P = Err... no idea, actually :D

Someone's bound to mention LBP soon too (LittleBigPlanet).

CoD5 (WaW) and LBP (Tie for me, but LBP will last longer)
Simpsons WallRunner did it. :D

I don't play nearly enough games to even consider having a favorite. There are plenty that I'd like to have a go at, I just don't have the time.

Then RB2 and GH4 (I like RB2's UI and Gameplay, but GH4's song list is just better, IMO)
I would say that GH4's song list may be comparable, possibly better, but as I have spent a ton of money on dowloadable content for Rock Band Guitar Hero can't come close. The simple fact that Rock Band 2 works with all past Rock Band DLC songs and most Rock Band disc songs immediately gives it a pool of nearly 500 songs to pull from.

As for me:

Metal Gear Solid 4 is likely my favorite game of 2008.

LittleBigPlanet pulls a very close second, if not a tie.

Gran Turismo 5: Prologue is right behind that. Had the online been better it would have likely taken top spot.

And I cannot forget the awesomeness that is WipEout HD.

I still need to get Rock Band 2 and Bioshock.

On the PSN I will definitely say that The Last Guy and Echochrome have held my attention. WipEout HD is tuo fully-featured for me to count it with other PSN games. It just wouldn't be a fair comparison.

I see what you're saying, but personally I like the classic rock that Guitar Hero has, and only ever bought a few songs as DLC (like 6, 3 of which were free)

However, when HMX's Beatles game comes out, I'll be first in line :D

Classic rock Guitar Hero has?
You mean like The Who, Boston, Jethro Tull, Deep Purple...etc etc? I prefer Rock Band's greater variety, Guitar Hero has gone all rock/metal/nu-metal orientated whereas Rock Band has some nice variety into country, goth, post-punk, pop, new wave, death metal etc.

I'd say Rock Band 1 (because it didn't come out on PS3 till this year in Europe) and I'm still waiting for Rock Band 2 to be released (damn you EA, oh and damn you more for further ruining the Command & Conquer name).
GT5:P because it's made me play a "demo" for over 6 months, which is mightily impressive seeing as I don't play most modern (full) games that long.

I can't say I was too impressed with MGS4....I felt it was an unsatisfactory end to the story in my opinion though it was done very well and it was still a great story, I just didn't feel it was really better than MGS1, 2 or 3.

Little Big Planet was excellent for the first few weeks, however, the really awful lag I seemed to regularly get online and the lack of people around to play multiplayer (along with my lack of time to sit down and try and get through the really difficult sections) meant that this game didn't beat either RB or GT5:P in terms of longetivity, thus I don't feel it was a "game of the year". I also somewhat question how this game was aimed at 7 year olds when quite a lot of the game has some extremely difficult platforming sections, I doubt they really tested this with that age group.

Other good games that just didn't quite do enough: Grand Theft Auto 4 (suffered the problem of "same-old") and FarCry2 (very well made FPS, just released about 4 years too late, suffered from not doing much new).

The only thing with RB for me is I don't like much of the songs in this "Variety", whereas I'm a big fan of 60's/70's Rock/Pop, and GH4's songlist is great for me. I enjoy playing RB2 better though, because of the way everything works.

It's all down to a matter of opinion, and mine is of the "liking oldies" variety, whilst you probably like other things.

My sister loves RB2 though because she knows the words to most of the songs (which means I've never heard them :P)

Be glad you aren't in Australia. They don't even have Rock Band yet.

Who said it was aimed at seven year olds? It may have been content rated for 7+ (not sure how those European ratings work) but it was intended for all age groups.

WallRunner, you will have to explain the oldies thing to me as I spend more time playing The Who, Boston, and Rush in Rock Band than anything else. What bands specifically are drawing you in? Both games have a good mix of old and new, but I think song preference comes down to which individual songs in the genre you prefer. I will say this for classic rock in these games though: whichever one manages to snag Led Zeppelin will get my undying love.

The thing with Harmonix is that they are not afraid to throw in some up and coming bands, like Flyleaf and Lacuna Coil, or some oddities, like Tenacious D. So, for some their list seems odd, where as I am waiting for a Tenacious D album pack.

But at the end of the day they are getting into exclusivity battles and so the best song selection will come from owning both games. And as a lot of their DLC is all looking similar lately I would say that for future longevity picking a favorite may come down to preferred gameplay.

Motorstorm: Pacific Rift

Bollocks to everything else, this will take all your other games and stomp on their testicles with spiked boots while breathing fire from a mouth made of metal, eyes made of lasers and a tongue made of a million chainsaws.

RAAAAAARGH!

Well in that case, Marvel Vs Capcom 2 (since 2000), Call of Duty 4 ( or W@W) and now SF2HD.

Currently, "Band on the Run" (Paul McCartney & Wings) is my favorite song on GH4. But I also like things like "The Joker" (Steve Miller Band), "Hotel California" (The Eagles), "Ramblin Man" (Allman Brothers Band), "Up around the bend" (CCR), and "American Woman" (The Guess Who).

Although when I get the songs transferred over from RB1 to the RB2 game I'll likely play it more often than I do as I liked the setlist for RB1. "Gimmie Shelter" ('Stones), "Won't get fooled again" (The Who), "Wanted dead or alive" (Bon Jovi, but really only because I can nail the vocals+Guitar on medium :p) "and a few others I can't think of right now.

I love both games though, it's just GH4's setlist attracts me more currently.

I couldn't even finish a race on the demo before I was fed up, neither could my friend when he gave it a whirl and he LOVED Motorstorm when I took it round, but hated the Rift.

I'll point out now, the demo is rubbish. If your going to atleast criticise it rent the full game. This game is underrated due to its pretty average demo, the full game is much better and more enjoyable as you can see from mine and Moglets reactions to it.

1.MGS4 just....truly magnificent

2. Rockband 2....just great fun with a bunch of friends if you're willing to spend some cash on some more mainstream songs.

3.Resistance 2....graphics are amazing, good fun, AI much harder than the prequel...it would've taken second if it had 4 player offline matches :grumpy:

4. GT5....great fun but without online play....gets boring real quick after you're done the classes

Dead Space
Half Life Orange Box
Grid
Guitar Hero 3 carry overed into 08 Death Magnetic and Dragon Force did the trick.

Very sad seeing i own 33 games buying 12 this year alone. I like them all but these are my favorites.

Yeah the demo really doesn't do it any justice. It's not exactly the most exciting track and the vehicle selection is poor, the full game has 15 more tracks and I'd say most of them are much more exciting than the demo one! God knows why they picked that track, they'd have been better off with Razorback or The Edge.

Isn't the whole idea of a demo to give you a taste? When I say fed up I mean completely and utterly bored out my brains. Surely a demo is meant to try and tempt you into a purchase? I wouldn't even rent the full game (obviously it would be better) but Motorstorm (original) was nice at first but also didn't last long. PC felt to me like Motorstorm one with a bit of green paint and (to me at least) more boring physics.

For example, I tried the Grid demo, like it, so I went out and bought it, got exactly what I asked for. Is it wrong of me to make a few judgements from a demo? Not to mention, I never actually claimed the whole game was rubbish, I said me and my friend didn't enjoy the demo at all, I was more surprised how it was being put in someones list because of the mark the demo left on my memory.

Anyways, we're not here to discuss 1 game :)

1. Metal gear solid 4. Maybe my favorite single player game ever.

2. Socom confrontation. I love the socom online series. Socom is really in a completely different category. No other game I have ever played gets ahold of me like socom. I have spent literally thousands of hours playing the series, and I still get butterflies in my stomach sometimes, when a really good gunfight occurs.

3.NCAA football. This year they added the online dynasty. It was really a breakthrough for this franchise. No other sports game, has ever had such a complete online experience. Me and 2 of my friends are still playing this game almost every night since july. We are on our 6th season together, and it's probably going to keep going until the new version is released.

I would love to put gt5p on here, but I was pretty let down by it. It was my first prologue version of the GT series that I bought, so I really didn't know that it would be this trimmed down. I thought that there would be a lot more support for the game after it's release. But if I was going to give an honorable mention award gt5p would get it. You know what?

4. Honorable mention GT5p.
