it was a special price at amazon: $180 for 6950 but... 2-5 week shipping... they accidentally gave the 6950 the price of the 6850.

Dammit! :grumpy:

Next time you see a deal like that, PM me immediately.

I'm waiting for someone to come out with the "I'm still rocking an nForce3 (or 4) board with an X800GTO.

Anyone using dip switches to overclock? :p

ATI Mobility RADEON 9000 32MB DDR 4x AGP

Pimpin' yo.

Last 'good' AGP card I had was a 7800GS, and that was ages ago. Go get yourself a 9250 and strut your DX7 (or is it 8?) stuff like there's no tomorrow!

8600 GTS "Superclocked" (factory, by like 50mhz...) 512MB, PCI-E

I remember when this card was new, paid almost $300 and was like the next best thing you could buy to an 8800. The only new game that I've been able to run good in the last couple years is Portal 2. I first bought this card and could run TF2 maxed out, at the time this computer only had 1GB RAM. Now it has 2, and thanks to all the updates I have to run it bare minimum. >_<

Still, better than the onboard 6200 (nvidia, not ATI....) lol

Should have gotten an 8800GT instead.

...And I'm participating in this thread way too much.

@T12 - This is just my temporary set up  I couldn't see the point in changing the card in T40 (? Somewhere round there...) :p

I've got a 1950xtx, I think. Had a 850xtx before that. Was into gaming but a week after the 1950 arrived I lost interest. A week after that my 550w fortron went and the spare 400w fortron couldn't handle my overclocks so the system had to be reverted back to stock.

Forgot about the second rig in the house that's running a 7900GT.

Let's take this in to a different direction: how about in addition to specifying your current video card/onbaord solution you also specify what you've used in the past?

- Radeon 9250 128MB
- nVidia (PNY) GeForce 7800GS 256MB
- X1900 XTX 512MB (Almost. Almost brought an X1800)
- nVidia (PNY) 7900GT 256MB
- X1900 XTX 512MB (Refurbished; died a couple of months after purchase)
- X1900 Crossfire (Software)
- HD3870 (Never had a 2900-anything because they sucked ass and you know it)
- HD4870 512MB (Still going strong but is finally starting to show it's age)
- HD4870 X2 2GB (Replacement is on the way)

Almost brought a 9800GX2 before settling on the 4870, and I never realized it until now, but I'm a bit of an ATI fan aren't I? I'd also have a 6950 right now had tuition bills not been all up in mah face.

I think in order....

Voodoo 2
Geforce 2 MX
Geforce 2 Ti
Geforce 4 MX
Geforce FX5200
Geforce FX5600
Geforce 7200
Geforce 7600GS
Geforce 8600GT
Radeon 1950X
Geforce 9600GT (Obtained for free)
Radeon 5770 x 2
Geforce GTX470

Next up...580 or 590.

What are you doing with workstation cards? :p

If it's down to getting the most out of everything, go for the 590. And then...and then break me off a 6990. :D

6990s are loud as hell - the performance is nice, yes, but would you really be able to cope with the noise?

My rig sounds like a microwave (Crossfire 5770s + a few fans and two hard drives) so I could get used to anything... but if your current system is near-silent then anything remotely noisy will do your head in :p

As for past and present 3D solutions:
S3 ViRGE 4MB (I think), although that's my Windows 95 computer so it doesn't really count
Riva TNT2 M64 32MB (beastly! XP ftw)
Mobility Radeon 3650 512MB (laptop's graphical "power")
Radeon something 256MB (replacement computer when the XP system died, not sure what card's actually in it. May not be ATi/AMD and may not be 256MB)
Radeon 5770x2

As much as I personally dislike ATi at the moment I would have got a 6990 if the noise wasn't so disgraceful, and doesn't seem to be any after market coolers at the moment. At least the 590 is reasonable. To be honest I'll probably get a 3GB GTX580 and another down the track, as I think the 1.5GB framebuffer hampers the 590 a bit. But if the price is reasonable I may get it anyway, as most of the 3GB 580s are triple slot which makes SLi a bit of a squeeze. And then I could 2x 590 to be crazy awesome.

Decisions, decisions....

All the TNT2 was a badass card. I had one of those too.

So for the past cards:

3DFX Voodoo 2 (8 or 12mb?)
3DFX Voodoo 3 (16mb)
GeForce 4 TI 4200 (128mb)
BFG Geforce 6800 GT OC (256mb)
2x Geforce 7900 GS (512mb each)
Visiontek ATi Radeon HD 4890 OC (1gb)

And as posted previously my current setup
2x evga nividia gtx480 (1.5gb each)

One may be loud, two may very well sound like a jet turbine but that wouldn't bother me. Besides I've yet to hear any card (single or double) that's louder than the X1900; put that on 100% fan speed, live with it for 2 or 3 years and then you'll know exactly what I'm talking about. Now imagine two of them running 24/7 during the time my refurbished 1900 was running like a champ.

You think your 5770's are loud? I guarantee you can hear one (1) 1900 over both 5770's. :p

Laptops:

Mobility ATI 9600 Pro
Nvidia 8600 GS

Desktop:

ATI Sapphire HD5850 (Current)

Why on earth are the new iteration of videocards so cheap?

I remember when the nVidia GTX 400 series launched, and they went anywhere from $180-$500; these new GTX 500 "Ti" series are all under $200!

Am I missing something?

Yes. . .

But why're they so cheap? Historically, the mid-range graphics cards were ~$250-$350; this is just $129.

Basically, I'm wondering if something in the market has changed drastically (corporate takeover(s), partnerships, new manufacturing processes)?
