Seeing as there are many "omg, like, this guy uses ASM, what a loser n00b" comments, here's a question for everyone:

What are your opinions on each assist? (ABS, ASM, TCS, driving line, SRF, and A/T)

Me:
ABS- use it pretty much 24/7, never drove a real car without ABS...yet.
ASM- fine with it, mostly for people new to sims, though you're a sloth when using it.
Driving line- don't really care as I can make my own line.
TCS- like TCS, only slows you down, mostly for uncontrollable cars/new people.
SRF- used it before and hated it, felt like I was driving with soft slicks rather than sports soft.
Automatic transmission (A/T)- was using since release till a couple weeks ago when I made the switch to M/T, quite understandable to using A/T.

Poll should be up soon.

I don't really use them that much but it's fine if other people do. Anyone who says "hurr tc iz bad i am teh l33t epic master" needs to die.

ABS - I set it to 1. I cant really drive fast without it but I dont need to set it any higher than 1.
ASM - I hate it. It slows you right down around corners and removes any fun from the car. There are better ways of keeping your car on the road.
Driving Line - I always turn this off. I use my line, not their's.
TCS - I tend to avoid it but if I'm driving a very powerful race car like the Minolta or 787B, I'll use TCS 1 or 2.
SRF - Makes you faster and there's no real downside to it, but there's no real sense of acomplishment when you're using it.
Automatic transmission (A/T) - You take more time around corners when using auto. Being able to shift when you want to will do great favours to your lap times.

ABS: I usually set it to one. I can handle no ABS, especially after Keicar Month, but I prefer to have a little ABS aside from none to catch myself if I'm a bit of an idiot.

ASM: I don't depend on it. Moreover, it kills a car's personnality.

TCS: I tend to avoid it. However, for very powerful cars, especially the FGT, I'll use TCS 1.

SRF: I avoid it most of the time on principle. Traction Control, Stability Control, Anti-Lock Brakes, those are all real electronic assists on a car. GT5 explains Skid Recovery Force as a sort of magical grip-increasing force that keeps you from spinning. That sounds kind of wacky to me, so I don't use it.

Driving Line: I used to use this until I took myself off it and learned to use my lines. I will use it to learn braking points, though. I'll find myself using the flashing "SHIFT DOWN STUPID" numbers as braking points and end up slowing down way more than I should, so I would rather either use the Line to give myself braking point reference, then learn where to brake or not on my own.

Automatic Transmission: I used to use this all the time, but on faster cars with quick trannies, especially the Minolta and the FGT, I find myself shifting gears like mad and killing my desired revs out of a corner. Now I would rather use a manual to control my speed and maintain smooth driving techniques.

I tend to leave them all off personally. The first time i used ABS again was when i was doing a night rain race with my friend on the ring since i had never done it before.

The only assist I ever use is TCS but I only use that if I can not control the car at all. Oh and abs too just cause it comes with them all.

ABS - I use it
TCS- Acceptable on high powered RWD/FWD cars, kills the fun on anything else
Driving Line - Good for learning new tracks

Automatic, ASM, SRF:

Should have made this a multi choice poll. Anyways driving line, ASM, SRF, and Auto trans are the only things I don't really like.

ABS - I use it and set it to 1. Generally this is accepted among the community as the standard setting. If you're hardcore and go for 0 ABS, I hope you have a set of pedals with good resistance.

TCS - I usually set it to 0. I have my controller set up to alter it during a race, I usually use it at the startline if i'm out of practice with my starts, or in a very high powered car (Then change it back once i'm past second gear). I have no problem with others using this however, as higher settings actually reduce your acceleration, and TCS 1 can hinder some cars ability to turn for some odd reason.

SRF - I never use it, and I frown upon those who do. See this face? This is my frowny face :grumpy: (I guess you can make exceptions for the Vettel Challenge and such - but for general use, it's a no-no).

ASM - This makes you slower, full stop. It's a pointless driving aid when SRF is available. Also makes the NASCAR event races stupidly hard (Though you can do the little 'turn ABS off' trick, which turns off the forced ASM aswell)

Automatic transmission - I used to use this myself. I see no problem with it, manual gears take practice, and if somebody is already comfortable with AT, that's fine by me. The only reason I switched was because AT kept switching down to second gear in the esses at Suzuka in GT5P, which is not cool when you're in a Ford GT spec II.

Driving Line - I don't use it myself, as I see it more as a distraction. Plus half the time the lines are usually not the quickest, which is why I have no problem with others using it. Can be quite handy in some license tests though.

Everything off, also the ABS even in cars which have it in real life, why? Because it's more fun, to me at least! Although I am faster with ABS.

I started out with needing them, i've gotten to the point now where I only need T/C to be on 1 and ABS on 1.
I'm Evolving... My Third Eye is blinking.

I don't use anything other than abs and the occasional tcs on LMP's, but its fun to mix things up and try the others out from time to time, just to see how easy mode it gets. Its like having a sim and arcade racer in one game.

I think people should use whatever they want if its fun for them...except ASM. I can't imagine that ever being helpful. Also, I think some of the assists can help newcomers focus on learning one aspect of the game at a time, eg: using Active Steering to learn how to find lines easily, then turn it off to learn the acceleration techniques. If they mess around with all of the assists, there can be a smooth progression until they are no longer needed.

ABS - Depends on the map and the car
TCS - Off
ASM - Off
SRF - Off
Driving Line - Off
Automatic transmission

I'm using sixaxis.

i have to use all the assists while using a Mini while on Daytona, with Racing Soft and -13 ride height.

Like A Boss!

I personally don't have a problem with others using them. I just don't use them because I prefer to feel the car's handling. I do keep the ABS at 1, because I tend to brake into a corner at times. Yea yea I'm a crappy driver haha.

ABS - Nothing wrong with this; it's a real life system in cars.

TCS - Nothing wrong with this: it simply adjusts the sensitivity of your throttle and it slows you down if you rely on it too much anyways.

SRF - Ultra easy mode for noobs and bad drivers. Actually increases your lap times if you tend to make mistakes. Unrealistic arcade mode that shouldn't ever be usable online against other real people.

ASM - Don't know what this actually does. Never tried it. lol.

Driving Line: I use it when driving many different cars at different powers race after race. More noobs wouldn't be noobs if they actually used this because they might learn to brake sooner and not rear end everyone. So if others use this you might not get rammed off the track so often: think about it. lol

Automatic Transmission: this is actually for pros. While manual transmission is difficult to learn, you actually have a greater advantage over automatic transmission users in terms of speed: i.e. if a manual transmission expert gets beat by an automatic transmission user, they should feel a little more ashamed. lol. I use only manual transmissions in real life, but can't stand the lack of engine vibrations and transmission sounds: i.e. it doesn't feel right to me. I would love to engine brake...and shift withyout using the clutch, but alas sometimes real life is better than games ;).

ABS - Usually on, no problem with it granted it gets rather difficult without it on a DS3.
TCS - Depending on the car. Sometimes those LMP/LeMans cars can get wyld without it. XD
ASM - Always and forever will be off. Just slows me down.
SRF - What is this?
Driving Line - Mostly off. Only on in practice and time trial as such for perfecting lines.
Automatic transmission. Manual for fun online.

Your opinion on assists

Your poll options are terrible. I didn't vote because there's no correct answer there.

Here's the thing about assists. They're handy for players that need them. Skilled players should turn them off for a deeper, more challenging experience and opportunity to become even better. Nobody leaning on assists is "hardcore", "skilled", "great", "a master", or "1337", but if someone isn't very good or just wants to breeze through events on easy street, they're there for them.

If someone wants or needs them, that's fine. If someone has some decent amount of skill such that they can and do get by without them, that's fantastic.

Personally, I've got no assists of any kind, including manual tranny, no race line, ABS 0, and (just for the sake of it) I sit in the cockpit on any car that has one.

EDIT:
I want to add a note about arguments about certain aids existing in the real world. This is really just an excuse for people to dial down the difficulty. Besides the fact that not all real-world cars have traction control or anti-lock brakes (F1 cars don't have them, for example), having them in the real world doesn't mean we need to use them in the game. Talented players can still turn them off. We don't need the BS excuses for keeping the training wheels on.

Do what ever you want! Go every assist, I'll do what I want and we'll get out of it what we put in.

I usually have 1 or 2 on TCS and 1 or 2 on ABS.

I started out with needing them, i've gotten to the point now where I only need T/C to be on 1 and ABS on 1.

Well..."need"...I think it's still a game and I'm having fun with TCS / ABS on 1 and sometimes even SRF and ASM on. I don't have to fire up the PS3 if I want to have fun "for real" - I'll just drive in my own car and visit one of the tracks around here. ;)
