YSSMAN's Secret Invasion

The C5 Vette idea crossed my mind when I made the last GTO post, but seeing as YSSMAN had said he didn't want one in the OP I didn't mention it. Also, practicality sucks. And I think getting a V6 Camaro would be a bad decision. And it seems more of a midlife crisis car to me. I've actually yet to see a young male driving one. All older guys or high school girls.

Thus, he would be helping to bring down yet another useless stereotype.

E39's are getting on a bit as already mentioned, but if you can find a good one I would definately recommend one, they are fantastic cars to drive. They also look better, ride better and have a much nicer interior than the E60 IMO.

I would think seriously before going for the M5 though, they can be VERY expensive cars to run.

So by that logic, he should get a VW Beetle Convertible. YSSMAN is heterosexual and that will combat the homosexual connotations that go along with such a car.

The Mustang is better in every measurable way and YSSMAN seems to prefer it over the Camaro. There's really no reason to even look at the Camaro, then.

Especially when he's already thinking about the GTO, which he also seems to prefer over the Camaro (which is fair enough, because it is arguably a better car).

Before you plunk down a hefty chunk of change and are married to a car note for the next several years; go test drive a Mazda RX-8.

It's a love it or hate it kinda car. I don't think there is a person on the planet that is on the fence with those things after they drive it.

You want the GTO or the brand spankers V6 Mustang, hells yes.

I'm really really agreeing with this here.

I do like the 500 a bit too, but I like the Panda better, believe it or not. I don't know when those are, or if they are, coming to the US, and I don't think you'd be the most interested. I might be a bit boring, but they are at least a bit more practical.

YSSMAN, I agree with BrutherSuperior. Go test drive an RX8.

Then buy an IS300 instead. Faster, more economical, more practical, and it's a Lexus, not a Mazda.

I don't get it. :indiff:

Heres what you do:

Go buy a low mileage this:

Put some money to make it fast but still end up costing less then these:

Watch in amazement as people can't believe what just destroyed them on the 1/4. Costs less to fix, and never breaks down. :D

Or...he could not buy a crappy car. Which is pretty much his goal here. If he's looking to grow up and make a statement and be recognized as above-average, he's going to need a car that does the same. People aren't impressed by cheap Pontiacs.

I know an intelligent person who built up a 350hp/tq Gran Prix GTP. Tranny lasted the better part of a year.

Yea I get your point Keef, the interiors do fall apart on these. Haha GM and their interiors.

And ahh Eric, So true. I gave mine to my mom 'cause I didn't want to make it too fast (plus her car died and she needed one) and kill the tranny like you say. That's just what happens when you put down such epic power to a trans axle.

Thing about the Pontiac, is that it was super boring to drive. I got a E30 Now so that problems solved. :dopey:

Yeah that would be the other part. Boring automatic V6 FWD American sedan. Only goes fast one way.

Yea. Atleast I was able to make those silly 90's mustangGT guys wonder what the heck they just lost to at the drag strip. :sly:

Edit: Sorry, getting off topic here :-(

I know a guy who spent a considerable amount of time and money swapping an LS1 into his '98 Grand Prix. It was fast. It was loud. It was mean. And when he was done with it he told me that even he never understood why he didn't just buy a Trans Am instead.

And the only difference today is that you replace "Trans Am" with "GTO."

Was his GP at least a sedan?

Edit: Also, Brad, have you considered newer Saaaaaaaaaaaaaabs? I know there's an '08 2.0T sedan with a manual on Autotrader right now for something around 18 grand.

The only respectable Pontiacs are the G8 and Solstice. Unless you feel like restoring a classic GTO.

Have you thought about getting a gently used Ford Escape V6 (you could find a Mazda Tribute too) either with FWD or AWD? That will help during the Grand Rapids, Michigan winters. --- Randy

"I'm a grown up and I like to have fun?"

Mazdaspeed 6
May not quite fall under 400/monthly when insurance is figured in. However, this was the car I wanted to buy. Problem was that none of the examples I drove had been taken care of. Power delivery is pretty standard fare for a small displacement turbo. I wouldn't say it's all or nothing, but I remember the most fun being between 3 - 4.5k and major boredom everywhere else.

As for easily falling under the benchmark:

Mazda 6 Wagon V6 5spd. Or sedan for that matter.
I was shocked this existed in America. Ultimately, it doesn't quite pack the punch that most other midsize V6's do. But it looks better, and drives better. Maybe it's a bit to mom mom and not enough zoom zoom but it was on my radar when I was looking to get four doors.

Lexus IS300, Subaru Legacy GT, Infiniti G, E46
Previously mentioned standard fare in this kind of discussion. Though, mostly endorsed.

Volvo S60 T5 maybe the R?
You probably won't get noticed. Unless you're circle includes people who like academics. But, it's a very underrated player in many of these talks. It's very nice inside. It looks good. It's not a corner carver or drift champ, but it gets the job done and it's deceivingly quick. It's not really far off the R, which I may as well suggest, but decent examples with good prices are hard to come buy. They are out there, but not on every corner.

Saab 9-3 Aero
I admit I know little of this car. 2.8L Turbo V6. Front wheel drive. Can be had with a 6spd. Oh, and I personally think it looks better than anything else I've mentioned.

CTS
Fits the parameters. Not much else to say.

Less grown up options?

GLI
I'm not interested in this car. But hey, it's an idea.

WRX
Was not on my radar and as mentioned, it's probably not worth the headaches given by previous owner.

GTO Alternative?

Mustang Mach 1
??

If I were to grab a newer Saab, I'd probably want a SportCombi with the Turbo V6. They seem to be harder to come by. Or a TurboX. Ooooooh, how I'd love to have a TurboX.

Oh, and BonesBrigade!

Mazdaspeed6 - I'm not opposed to it, but I feel like it would be similar to the WRX, where they'd probably be beat to hell. I really don't know enough about the reliability of the car either. I'll have to look into it.

Mazda6 - Totally. I'd love to get one of the previous-generation hatchback or wagon variants. Both are extremely rare around here. I drove a couple different 6's back in the day, loved them to pieces.

Mustang Mach 1 - I assume you mean the "New Edge" one? If so, yes. But, for the money, the GTO makes more sense to me on a day-to-day basis.

I like the idea of an S60R, or (even better) a V70R. I have to wonder whether Brad would be able to actually get one, though. I'm sure he could get one in the high-teens, but he'd have to find one first.

Different target demographic. Different standards of care put into the car. The Mazdaspeed 6 was targeted more towards the type of people who bought Golf R32s than those who bought WRXs, so while I am unsure of how reliable they were to begin with, there is far less of a chance of them being driven into the ground like WRXs were.

What about the Saabarus?

I don't think I'd want to play with a Saabaru. I'd rather just get a WRX. Or a 9-3. Not some WRX with a 9-3 front end.

Odd Note:
Insurance on a 2005 GTO is almost $30 less a month than what I pay on the Celica. Something isn't right.

Teenagers are less likely to be able to afford (let alone have the credit to finance) the former than the latter. Its the same reason that full-blown Corvettes typically cost less to insure than even V6 Camaros do.

You're looking at it from the wrong perspective. It's not a boring Subaru, it's an exciting Saab!

Or in other words, it's a WRX that isn't ugly, and a Saab that handles, doesn't torque steer and has great reliability.

I'm quite disappointed we never got the Saabaru over in the UK, it neatly fixes all the image issues I have with the normal Subaru.

But, don't you want to be like Jim Halpert?

One thing to note, that I think may be worth noting, is that often, or at least sometimes, owners of hot family sedans like the S60R or even the Mazdaspeed 6, are owned by people who bought them because they were the top tier model. They weren't bought to be hooned, just bought to be someone's weird status symbol. If you can go private party, look for the sellers in the late 40's with full beards and I'm sure you'll be fine.
