A brand-new set of Gran Turismo 7 Daily Races is now available, with three new events to tackle over the coming seven days with a bit of a twist to the setup.
For the most part, the events aren’t quite what you might be used to, featuring specific car lists in two of the three races with their own pre-set tunes and liveries, as well as an unusual change in how the races are ranked this week.
Race A takes you to Tokyo Expressway Central Clockwise for a five-lap race in classic Honda Civics. You may well be wondering which generation, and the answer to that is “yes”. You can pick EF, EG, and EK Civics, even including the fictional Touring Car variant of the EK, but not from your own garage.
Instead there’s a line-up of cars with tunes already applied and in-era touring car liveries from which you can select — with several different ones for each car. Which one you choose is up to you, but there are some neat ones in the line-up… and you’ve gone for the Spoon livery, haven’t you?
Oddly, this week’s A is entirely unranked. In the latest rejig of Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) settings, both are turned off this week. That means your stats in these areas won’t change as a result of this race no matter what you do.
For Race B there’s a hint of the more familiar this week — an island of normal in among the unexpected elsewhere — as you head to Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya’s GP course in No Chicane layout. This version of the track skips out the final RACC Chicane, making for a fast run onto the main straight.
Naturally the cars for this are the Gr.3 machines, and they’re much of a muchness in terms of balance (bar the outliers, which are usually the old and older cars), so you can pick whatever you want and have a decent chance. Make sure your car is on Racing Medium tires (rented ones have the right tires already) for this five-lapper.
Finally we have a bruising encounter at the 24 Heures du Mans Circuit — formerly the Circuit de la Sarthe in previous GT games — in the “No Chicane” variant for a six-lap race with a specific Gr.1 car list.
Like Race A, you can pick from different models, although in this case they’re the Group C cars from the Gr.1 category. They’re also all pre-tuned and sport a selection of custom liveries, so you again can’t use your own garage cars.
So far so good, but the race also brings the weather down upon you. It’s seemingly pretty random, but it does look to be guaranteed rain at some point — and quite a lot of it — so it’s a good job that the cars all also have wet-weather rubber. We’d firmly advise checking the weather at race start and getting the correct tires on too: Racing Medium if dry, but Inter or Wet depending on your perception of the conditions. The race also goes through a day-night-day cycle, just to gild the lily.
Although just about moot, the race does have a mandatory pit stop in effect. Failing to head down pit road at least once during the race — tire swaps and more fuel are not required, as merely visiting is enough — will earn you a one-minute penalty after the race. Watch out too for pit entry and exist as touching the solid lines will also land you a penalty, of three seconds each time, which you’ll need to serve on-track at the exit of Arnage.
In another odd twist, Driver Rating updates are also turned off for Race C — although SR updates remain turned on.
Daily Races are the main ranked multiplayer events in Gran Turismo 7. Your Driver Rating (DR) and Sportsmanship Rating (SR) are determined by your performances, updating at the end of each race — although this is a mixed-bag this week — and these are used to set your ranking and league for the game’s flagship esports series each season.
In order to access the Daily Races, you’ll need to unlock Sport Mode, by completing Menu Book 9 (“Championship: Tokyo Highway Parade”) in the GT Cafe single player hub. A PlayStation Plus subscription is required to take part.
With GT7’s Daily Races updating every Monday across the game’s life to date, the next new set should arrive on Monday, September 29.
