Gran Turismo 7 Has 2 Million Monthly Active Users — And It’s Still Growing

During an interview at the Gran Turismo World Series 2025 World Finals here in Fukuoka, Japan, series producer Kazunori Yamauchi revealed that Gran Turismo 7 is currently maintaining an active user base of over two million monthly players—and perhaps more impressively, that number is still growing.

The disclosure, made during a round-table interview with select media including GTPlanet, comes at a peak moment for the franchise, following the recent announcement that the Gran Turismo series has officially surpassed 100 million copies sold worldwide.

“A Very Unique Situation”

While most titles see a steady decline in players years after launch, GT7 appears to be defying the traditional industry lifecycle. According to Yamauchi, the game’s current momentum is unlike anything Polyphony Digital or Sony has seen before.

Gran Turismo 7 has been released for several years, but still, the active users are currently over 2 million people, and the new users are increasing,” Yamauchi said. “The status that Gran Turismo 7 is in now is probably the best of any Gran Turismo titles that we’ve had in the past. We’ve never experienced this phenomenon before, and neither has PlayStation.”

What makes this particularly notable is that the growth is occurring without the traditional “price drop” strategy typically used to rejuvenate older titles. Yamauchi attributed this longevity to the studio’s evolving relationship with its community and a shift in how it supports titles long-term, a process that began with the update structure of Gran Turismo Sport.

Power Pack and Spec III

The surge in players is being supported by a steady stream of significant content. The recent launch of the Power Pack DLC and the highly anticipated Spec III update appear to have reinvigorated older players and continues to attract new ones as well.

Yamauchi noted that the success of these updates, particularly the Power Pack, which introduced unique race formats and modified vehicles, has enabled the team to take on “different challenges” they couldn’t previously attempt.

A Global Audience

It isn’t just the active player base that is expanding; the series’ footprint as an esport is reaching new heights. Additional data from Polyphony Digital representatives reveals that the Gran Turismo World Series events are now reaching around eight million people per event across global broadcast channels.

With the series recently hitting the 100-million-unit milestone and GT7 potentially on track to become the best-selling individual entry in the franchise, the franchise is arguably in the strongest position of its 28-year history.

Of course this could have interesting consequences on Gran Turismo 8’s potential development too. Even though the game’s 30th anniversary is rapidly coming up on us, and PD may be keen to do something special for the event, will Sony Interactive Entertainment want to ride this wave instead?
