Gran Turismo Celebrates 100 Million Copies Sold Worldwide

As part of today’s major announcements coming out of Polyphony Digital, including Gran Turismo 7: Spec III, recognition of another significant milestone has been achieved: over 100 million copies of Gran Turismo series games have been sold worldwide.

This landmark number, reached as of June 25, 2025, marks a significant acceleration in the franchise’s sales pace. The last major sales update came in December 2022, when Polyphony Digital announced the series had surpassed 90 million units sold to coincide with its 25th anniversary.

This means that in the two-and-a-half years since that announcement, the series has added another 10 million sales, largely propelled by the success of Gran Turismo 7. For comparison, the leap from 80 million (in May 2018) to 90 million took approximately four-and-a-half years.

Series creator Kazunori Yamauchi shared his thoughts on the achievement in a heartfelt message, expressing his awe at the sheer scale of the number.

“To pick up a video game box in a store, and line up at the cash register to purchase it; this action takes at least a few minutes to complete,” Yamauchi said. “To think that this has happened more than 100 million times around the world really blows my mind. To everyone in the automobile industry who has, and continues to, make automotive history; to everyone at Sony and all the retailers who have passionately supported the Gran Turismo series; and, of course, to all the players who have championed Gran Turismo over the past 28 years — this monumental achievement of 100 million units sold was made possible because of you. Thank you very much.”

Putting the 100-million-unit figure into perspective, it places the Gran Turismo series in rarefied air within the video game industry.

While behemoth franchises like Mario (950M+), Pokémon (480M+), and Grand Theft Auto (450M+) lead the all-time charts, hitting nine figures is a feat reserved for only the most successful and long-running intellectual properties. Multi-platform Need for Speed (150M+) still holds the edge in the overall racing genre, but Gran Turismo stands as both the most successful first-party racing simulation franchise in history, and is the highest-selling franchise exclusive to PlayStation.

The journey to this point has been a long one, spanning 28 years and multiple console generations. The official timeline notes several key sales milestones along the way:

  • 2008: Total worldwide sales surpass 50 million units.
  • 2013: Total worldwide sales surpass 70 million units (coinciding with the launch of Gran Turismo 6).
  • 2025: Total worldwide sales surpass 100 million units.

Although specific sales figures for Gran Turismo 7 have not been revealed as part of this announcement, if we consider our own sales estimates from December 2022, the game has likely exceeded 14 million copies sold.

This would put it close to Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec, the highest-selling game in the franchise at 14.89 million copies sold. And, with the “Spec III” update right around the corner, GT7 could be on track to become the best-selling Gran Turismo game of all time — if it’s not already.
