A dedicated cockpit is a big step up from a wheel stand or a wheel clamped to your desk. Everything stays put, your driving position is consistent every session, and you stop thinking about the hardware and just drive.

The Fanatec CSL Cockpit v1.5 and Seat Bundle is our pick at this price because it offers great value and a solid platform. It can also easily handle more powerful wheels, so you won't have to replace it if you invest more in your rig down the road.

The wheel is a Thrustmaster T248R, which offers a bit more power and functionality than the Logitech wheels in our other starter builds. A Logitech wheel would also work great here (feel free to swap one in on your own build).

Of course, you could say the T248R doesn't live up to the standards of the cockpit it's bolted to. It's also limited to a single platform, which is a constraint at this price point, and you'll have to spend a bit more to get broader platform support. But the entire package can be had for less than $750, and for a budget rig it delivers far more than you'd expect.
