Kazunori Yamauchi Describes PlayStation 4 as “Blank Canvas”

The PlayStation 4 was officially unveiled at Sony’s “PlayStation Meeting 2013” on Wednesday evening, and will be released at the end of this year (“Holiday 2013”).

Although Gran Turismo 6 did not make an appearance, Kazunori Yamauchi was featured in a video of developers talking about the console, where he described the system as a “blank canvas” while speaking about the ease at which content can be developed for it.

Even without an official GT6 announcement, some of the new console’s features create some exciting possibilities that will have a significant impact on how players will interact with the game.

Notably, players will be able to easily share and broadcast videos of their gameplay by simply pressing a “Share” button on the new DualShock 4 controller – a feature which should revolutionize the broadcasting and documentation of online racing.

The console will also be designed to work seamlessly with the PlayStation Vita by making it simple for developers to implement “second screen” functionality with the hand-held device.

Both features are similar to what Kazunori Yamauchi has been mentioning in interviews for several years now, from video uploading features in GT5 (which were eventually pulled before release due to PS3 memory constraints) to the possibilities of cross-platform racing he described in an interview with Joystiq back in 2007.

Aside from the DualShock 4 controller, the appearance of the new console remains a mystery. Check out the full press release for a closer look at the hardware’s specifications and features.

All eyes now turn to E3, taking place in Los Angeles this June, for more information on the new console – and Gran Turismo 6. Stay tuned!

Forget about gt6 where is Tourist Trophy 2! You Will have 6 gt games now and not a single Tourist Trophy game for ps3! Sure as heck not buying a ps4 or gt6 until TT2 is officially being made with concrete evidence not just word play. Step up Kaz, or step aside.. Can’t even get a bug fix in gt5 without 4 new ones springing up. Gt5 never should have even been released, maybe that is why 6 got underway only 2 years after gt5 dropped and stopped the idea of a 2nd TT2. Please support a TT2

  2. Youngun

A new question to be asked, will the next GT:A be on the ps4 or 3. Dont want to get practise in on the wrong system and the wrong game.

  3. KilzoneStrife

Impossible to port unless they use 1 Jaguar CorE PPE and use 4CUs in the GPU to emulate CELL, but even then.. it would require ground up coding as the new architecture is X86-64…
Would be a waste of time. To even rework ram usuage. As the PS4 SOC has the 8GB GDDR5 right next to it…
They should just remake the GT5 – GT6 engine and take it from there. If it took them 6 months to make one car before, it would take two weeks now. Really.
Simply upping the polygons is not good enough for PS4..

When Kaz said he was making an “operating system”.. he was hoping they would keep cell.
Now they have a set up thats much much much better, but 1st party devs have had to rework the engines to get it running. and their doing just that.

    1. KilzoneStrife

Well,, they have already done what people said is impossible..
8GB GDDR5.. the fastest ram in the world linked to the system in a unified manner..
just to put that in perspective… you only get it in 512MB slots. So, they have literally loaded 16 512MB GDDR5 slots onto the PS4 Motherboard! Insane!
The next xbox uses slow standard pc ram DDR3….
PS4 is in a league of its own.

  4. evertV12

I’m guessing GT5 will be ported to PS4 first. Ofcourse with content upgrades but most of all having no more memory limitations. Bottle neck will be internet speed performance vice. Imo GT5 deserves this.

  5. KilzoneStrife

Im on my phone at the moment, but here is an example of PS3 to PS4 leap!

    Dragons Dogma PS3

    m.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsJ3XwTkjWo&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DZsJ3XwTkjWo&gl=GB

Dragons Dogma 2 (Deep Down: Working Title)

    m.youtube.com/watch?v=hWIS8x0Sjg8&desktop_uri=%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DhWIS8x0Sjg8&gl=GB

    Look at the difference !!!!

    I want GT6 on PS4 FTW!!

  6. KilzoneStrife

If you guys TRULY want to see NEXT GEN..
dont waste time watching Crysis 3 etc.
Check Youtube for the working title Deep Down that was at the Playstation Meeting 2013..
I have NEVER seen in game graphics like that before! For those that played Dragons Dogma… this is Dragons Dogma 2 (look at inventery footage)

Go see that video and let that prepare you for Gran Turismo 6 on the PS4.

  7. KilzoneStrife

Thank God! Another voice of reason!
PS3 is 0.23TFlops!!! GT5 and Uncharted 2 and 3 and Killzone 3 pushed it to its limits!

PS4 is literally 10times more powerful than PS3!!
In fact, going by specs, the PS4 is TWICE the power of the next Xbox 3!!!!

    XBOX 3

6 core Jaguar CPU for games.2 Cores for Operating system.
    8GB DDR 3 at 76GB/sec
    AMD GPU 12 CU =1.2TFlops

    PS4

ARM CPU to handle Operating system
    8 Cores for gaming!
    8GB GDDR5 at 176GB/S
    AMD GPU 18 CU =1.83TFlops

    PS4 is a beast! I would never want a GT6 on PS3!!

    1. TeamCZRRacing

That’s PlayStation for you. PS has always been the best and most powerful console on the market. The PS1, when it came out, slaughtered EVERYTHING else on the market as far as power and sales. Same thing with PS2 and PS3 (at least as far as power goes – it did lag behind everyone else in sales). I’m definitely getting a PS4 when it comes out.

    2. GTrf

I waiting for “Metal Gear Solid 5: Ground Zeroes” on the PS3. And I loved the MGS4-Metal Gear Online (the best online game ever) watch youtube. It is a pity that servers MGO closed in 2012> :(((

    3. jomama2010

@CZRRacing…the PS2 was not the most powerful of that generation. Look at the Gamecube and Xbox and compare them to the ps2.

But the PS2 certainly was popular though.

  8. xero0083

Ok the ps4 is a blank canvas so hear is a question for you will GT6 be ready for the new system or do you need another 6 years to have it ready ? By that time everything will be hopelessly out dated again and lacking any relevance .

    1. KilzoneStrife

PS4 ram is unified GDDR5… if they had to remake GT5 ground up with this kinda ram at the begining, GT5 would have take 1.5years to make. Maybe less, a year.

  9. Rowdy Burns

Am I going nuts or does Polyphony Digital NOT appear in the “list of third party game developers and publishers” in the press release?

  10. Gwenbors

Poop. Just like that, GT6 went from a $60 game to a $560 one… Kind of inclined to agree with those wishing for a little more content per console generation. Gran Turismo has been the title that’s driven basically every single PS purchase since the 2 (nearly everything else I play is available cross-platform).

Wishing PD could’ve given us at least one more GT game within the lifecycle of the PS3… This stuff’s getting expensive…

    1. Traviizter

If they did, there would be no point.
Think about it, pushing the limits of the console means there’s only so much you can do before it gets old. This is what GT5 is, and GT6 on the PS3 would be basically the same game with a new look, more vehicles and tracks and not much else. The PS4 opens up a ton of new doors for the GT series.

By the advanced CPU in the ps4 it’s possible to out do gt5 I hope they add motorcycles just to twist the fun with cars and bike so much respect if they do

  15. Racemachine

Sony needs to fire kaz 6 years 60 million plus for half a game and 9-10 years for 2 games whenever gt6 comes out, kaz wants to do other stuff, I don’t blame him but we need someone who is going to work on gt6 full time and make it a great game again.

  16. sayba2th

I can’t believe how much whinging is going on here. The PS4 looks amazing – the console has been devoloped over the past 5 years, PD would have had this console to work on for GT6 during the past 2 years. The limitations are now removed and the possibilites are massive. I doubt it will take the same ammount of time to develop GT6 as it did 5 due to this. Name a better console sim ( I own Forza 4 as well)…none.

I believe that GT6 will be the game 5 was supposed to be. I personally want the game to be as good as it can be and now with the PS4 believe that it finally can. I for one am excited to see what can really be achieved now. I have no issues with constructive criticism from people as it pushes the developers to greater heights but most of what I read below sounds like a bunch of sniveling spoilt 5 year old throwing a tantrum over an arguement that is 2 years old and getting long in the tooth.

Its next gen so STFU and start being optimistic not pessimistic. Just because most of you feel the way you do below does not make your opinions correct or valid. The population used to think for the most part that the world was flat…… Rant over kiddies…..

    1. researchALLwars

I’m with you on the constructive criticism, but telling people to shut up may not be the most productive course of action.

    2. KWZX10

My same opinion, the ps4 it’s really a technical beast, more like a pc than an actual console… Everything will be simpler on many levels, thanks to this.
They don’t have any major limitatin now, i’m pretty optimistic too.

But for now i’m only watching to be honest, i don’t have plans on buying it soon, i waited a lot for the ps3, i’ll wait this time too, at least until the first price cut.

    3. sayba2th

Research its the whingers I have aimed that at. It gets to a point where when the same people keep running the same ol BS then they need to do just that. I have listened to it for the past 2 years put up with it and said nothing now I have had enough. Fairs fair!

    4. HarVee

“Just because most of you feel the way you do below does not make your opinions correct or valid.”

Oh my, speak of the devil!

    5. sayba2th

My point is simple Harvee let’s give this new technology a chance to do it’s thing before slamming it and GT6 before it’s even come out.

  17. CorvetteConquer

Great….a blank canvas that Kaz will stare at for 5 years. Let’s hope in the 2 years since GT5’s release that PD have gotten a decent head start!

  18. Niyologist

Everyone, count on GT6 being released by Late 2014. The PS4 is not using the hardware that made games struggle on the PS3. It has PC Hardware this time and excellent hardware as well.

    1. steebz

(but i still think there’s a tiny possibility there will be a prologue on PS3, but even i now know GT6 will be on PS4)

  19. blackjack

This tells me that just like GT5, GT6 certainly wont be available anytime near the release of the PS4. Better have bikes as well then!

  20. JaySamurai

I would loved to of seen GT6 as much as anyone else, but it would have been so sweet if Kaz and PD surprised us with game play of Tourist Trophy. That would look soooo sexy on PS4.

  21. Goruk

Kaz Thinking: ” well a could use GT5’s games’s engine for GT6…. But now I have this new blank canvas…. GUYS lets start all over again, FROM THE TOP” Millions of human drama right there…

    1. TeamCZRRacing

Porting GT5’s engine to the PS4 would be a much smaller task than creating probably 1500+ cars with at least 1,000,000 polygons each, and all with different handling and engine sounds. Then again, if anyone can do it, it’s Polyphony Digital. (Yes, unlike many here, I realize that it’s a whole team of hundreds of people coming together to make that game, and not just a one-man show.)

  22. CobaltSTI

Guys, stop complaining about GT6 not being announced. It’s your fault for believing that it would be announced, nobody said it would be ._.

  23. Barry Potter

GT6. Coming in about 3 years I reckon. Perhaps we’ll get Prologue as a teaser. But I’m not holding my breath.

  24. sandwiches

Well at last some news on the ps4 it sounds like a proper piece of kit. Cant wait to get my hands on that. One thing I must say about this site is that every time kaz has opened his mouth about anything there are some people here that get completly carried away with it sticking up comments they dont have a clue what there talkin about. Going on about gt6 like they know something and then when the announcement has been said and done then pd or kaz are the worst in the world for not being ready. Maybe some should keep these comments to themselves and just wait instead of always moaning about it why would ya wanna play old games on a new piece of kit its just stupid. Come on the ps4 cant wait for it and to see what pd will produce for us

  25. HuskyGT

I could care less about the console features. And much less if it’s going to be anther privacy violation social device. I only want to be able to play the new GT and sequels of my favorite games, alone with no one interrupting me.

  26. lalaurentide

I’m not buying another GT game or PS console in my life, unless GT6 is release on PS3 and GT7 on PS4. I bought a PS3 for the even numbered GT game, not the odd one, which is always half done and lacking content. They won’t be screwing me over twice, and now that I’ve got a heavily custom made Race Injection game with 300+ tracks and 400+ cars it will be hard to make me car about another GT game, or any other racing game for that matter, for a long time. Real simulator, yeah right! More like the real floating camera simulator, where’s the road Kaz? Because It feels more like flying in space to me.

  27. Z Crazy

Looks like a marginally increase in ability, but as previously stated a huge improvement in whats available to the programmers. Should also be a fair bit more stable. Bad news is, backwards compatibility is likely not gonna be suported (although everyone is guessing will be there). I’m thinking it would make no sense with the new strategy of ‘no used games’ – to make it work they would need to designate a ‘code’ for each copy currently out there, catalog them, and manage them. That just seems like too much work for an older console’s games. Also the quick release of the PS4 suggests PD may be developing another “Prologue” version that is very similar to GT5 in order to complete and finalize details for GT6, which I would assume is still 1-2 years out.

  28. NoonenF1

In 2010 FFXIII & GT5 were released for the PS3 and those two games were the only reason I ended up buying the console. Since FFXIII sucked, a new FF game won’t be a deciding factor for the new console, but a new GT game will be, especially if this new GT game still supports the DFGT. So… I hope that PD continues to support their current wheel peripherals and that they continue supporting GT5 because I’m betting GT6 on PS4 is a long way off yet (my guess is 2015 at the earliest).

  29. Flagmo-T

Well it only makes room for the new Games, to look forward too, that is soon to arrive – I will never ever again, wait and base my future Race fun on Sony and the GT series. when it comes! it comes! – I’m really into Grid2 – Project Cars, and Driveclub and so on , I’m not looking forward to GT6 at all, because then i wont be pissed as i did the last time, with the PS3 and GT5 – They look good both of them, but objectively i’m disappointing over the way it came out missing a lot of the stuff they announced..

    1. HuskyGT

I was thinking the same about Drive Club. Looks worth a try, but remember that release titles tend to over impress us a bit and then they end up being really crappy half baked games. I remember there were a bunch of those for PS3 like Dragons and Lairs, or whatever it was called.

But again, the game might be worth the try for car nuts. Some say its like Forza, but I highly doubt that.

    2. HuskyGT

Nevermind. Drive Club’s game dynamics sound absolutely tedious and boring. I hope that GT6 doesn’t adopt this whole social crap.

    3. TokoTurismo

I like DriveClub, looks like it could be a good game but I’m not really into teams and socializing. :\ I’ll think about it though. :)

      Can’t wait for GT6 on PS4.

  30. kollosson

What is everyone panicking about? there is more chance of GT6 being ontime’ because’ of the PS4. Looking at the specs, the PS4 is a PC in a box, unlike the cell processer, they are using current top spec-ish hardware, all games are coded on PC anyway and it makes dropping it onto the PS4 hardware childs play ( unlike the PS3 ) so i have no worries about GT6, my only concern is what memory they are using in the new system as they have not said other than it will have a ‘ huge ‘ memory. If it is a standard hard drive, 2 or 3 terrabytes say then it means the loading times are going to be just as bad if not worse, more textures, better graphics etc. Being as the selling point of the new system seems to be about speed and ease of use, instant gameplay etc then it would be a bit silly to then have crappy loading times so i’m hoping they go for a solid state drive which would be fast as hell and would make a huge difference and things ‘ would’ be instant, imagine navigating through GT6’s menus in the blink of an eye……

    1. another_jakhole

It’s known that it’s easy to port any game to the Vita with ease. With what the Meeting showed yesterday, why would they make it more difficult for developers to “port” their games to the PS4?

  31. belzebutt

Ok, I want that 5 min of my life back. All I heard was marketing BS about how “this new console will allow new possibilities”. Nothing of substance whatsoever.

  32. GTrf

PS4 the pathetic show on E3 (june 2013), but the actual presentation of the console will be at the “TOKYO GAME SHOW 2013” (september 2013).

  33. steebz

“Because the PS4 system is very simple, it’s like having a blank canvas…”

Yes Kaz, so all of that nonsense about GT6 using GT5’s game engine was just LIES then was it?

    1. steebz

      PS4 released 2013

      GT6 released 2014 (maybe)

Estimated amount of time between GT5 and GT6: FOUR YEARS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (Nearly as long as GT5 took to come out)

We are being fed hype at an astonishing rate, it’s ridiculous

    2. TokoTurismo

GT6 IS using GT5’s engine so he ISN’T lying. *Sigh* Are people STILL butthurt over the fact that GT6 didn’t show up at the meeting? Oh borther… >_>

    3. TokoTurismo

Funny thing is I’m not being a fanboy, dreamer, I’m stating what Kaz said about GT6 not taking as long as GT5 did, thus it would use its engine which YOU continue to ignore. Quit being pathetic already, you’re really showing yourself as a troll IMO…

    4. Quakebass

They can use the same engine, it’s just FAR more difficult to write for on the PS3. The PS3’s cell processor uses a more unconventional environment, and the PS4 uses an extremely easy and and conventional PC-set up. So it WILL be easier to write for. It isn’t GT’s engine, it’s the environment of the system they’re writing for.

It took so long to rebuild GT5’s engine on PS3 for that reason. Now the engine is mostly built, and it’s extremely easy to code for. It allows PD to get things done so much faster. There wasn’t lies about the engine. I’m sure GT6 will use the same engine, but PD now have the ability to rebuild a new engine, but do it in a fraction of the time.

I don’t think they’ll do this though, since they’ve already got a great one going.

    5. steebz

Look Tokoturismo, don’t call me pathetic. I have an opinion and i am allowed to share it. Not my fault if you get offended when someone calls you a fanboy. You act like one. Every time someone has something negative to say about GT, PD or Kaz you start crying. As for me being a troll, complain to the webmaster. Otherwise be quiet.

@Quakebass – Thanks for that information. I genuinely thought they would have to design a whole new engine for PS4 but what you say makes sense. Thank you for sharing it with me in an adult manner

    6. TokoTurismo

Yawn @steebz. I don’t know why I even wasted my time with you in the first place, and offended for being called fanboy, by you? Please dreamer who wanted GT6 on PS3… I allow ANYONE to saying any criticism towards the GT series (unless it’s CONTRUCTIVE), so you go ahead and believe all you want that I’m being/acting like a fanboy, (even though I wasn’t at first…) So hush up…

Glad @Quakebass said what had to be said, you would have still been talking either way so don’t try acting all grateful all of a sudden…

    1. steebz

latest rumours are that it WILL play used games but i’d prefer to wait until the PS4 is here then we will know for sure

  34. RedBaron

Until they totally redesign tracks, the game will not look like next gen. Cars were next gen already in GT5:Prologue, but tracks are mostly totally obsolete and bland or average at best (GT5 Nürburgring). Engine sounds are totally medieval. Very hard work for PD team even if new console is much easier to code.

I honestly wish good luck with GT6 to PD! Please, let it be the PS4 launch title even if short on content, Kaz!

    1. steebz

just no. Are you seriously asking PD to release a game before it’s ready AGAIN? They cannot afford to do that, if GT6 is as poor as GT5 content wise, PD will be finished.

  35. pasigiri

“Kazunori Yamauchi Describes PlayStation 4 as “Blank Canvas””

Is anybody reading this as “it’s going to be a while before you see GT6”?

    1. eran0004

Nope. He was speaking about the possibilities of the new console, not about the development on GT6. A blank canvas in this context means that the console is open for any kind of ideas, the limitations are few and far away.

If there’s something implying that we might have to wait a long time before GT6, it’s the fact that it wasn’t mentioned at the event yesterday, and that they chose to promote that driveclub game instead. On the other hand, I got the impression that most presentations were from third party developers (to show that they have a broad industry supporting the console?) and as PD is a first party developer that might be a reason why they had no presentation.

    2. Quakebass

I find it funny that people are making a huge deal out of GT6 not showing up here, when we have a much, MUCH bigger event where it could be announced in June…

  36. aircoreboy

    Hi everyone, I’ve been using GTplanet for months now so I decided I might aswell start posting, here goes;

Having looked at the specs of the PS4 I noticed a curiosity, It’s stated as having an x86 cpu but with 8GB of ram. Since an x86 (32-bit) cpu can address a maximum of 4GB of memory, including video memory, does this mean an x64 instruction set will be included, making the PS4 64-bit?

    1. Sumo098

The x86 architecture can work with 16, 32 or 64-bit instructions. Memory constraints are down to the operating system in use rahter than the hardware (32-bit Windows for example can only address 4GB of RAM without PAE whereas 64-bit has a massive theoretical maximum that I can’t remember right now). In the case of a PC video card VRAM isn’t constrained by the OS as far as I know, but an APU (like the one in the Playstation 4) relies on system RAM for its memory needs so it does apply there.

    2. GTP_sahkojanis

It’s a 64-bit x86 processor. From TFA: “PS4 is centered around a powerful custom chip that contains eight x86-64 cores
and a state of the art graphics processor.”

    3. Foxiol

Just multiply a single core per 8. Architecture x86 doesn´t mean it will be a 32 bit. And as other guy said it will support 64 bits as any other PC CPU.

Software will be 64 bits to make use of all cores too. And OpenGL…so cool to make games. And you can use the real power and efficiency of the hardware thanks to it.

  37. HugoFilipe

I bet polyphony will continue to make DLC for GT5 to make us happy and keep us busy, but GT6 is only going out for PS4…

    1. JeremiahTB

How about making money? But then again, they could have been making easy money every month since the game was released and they haven’t taken advantage of it, so maybe they don’t need the money. It’s a poor business model, but PD isn’t known for making the best decisions.

  38. fet_thunderdome

No interest in social on a console gaming whatsoever, and no point making it an essential topic of the features. Console is about gaming, the rest is a mere integration. That said I’d like to see a GT6 game wich will be race-centric. I’d like to see qualifications, entire racing weekends, racing cars from 2013 too, not only from 1995. Dynamic weather and track conditions, and superb damaging model. This and more else should be GT6.

    1. eran0004

I think the social aspects could be interesting. If you want to watch an online race in GT5 you have to be in the lobby, taking up a slot which could be used by a driver. With the PS4 it seems like you can stream races live for anyone to watch. Some racing leagues might be interested in broadcasting their events. The social aspect is also something new, that’s why it got promoted so much at the event I think.

  39. SVT Cobra GT

I’m pretty impressed with the features they mentioned, instant pick up and play sounds superb! As well as being able to play games as they’re being downloaded and downloading them whilst its in standby mode.
BUT no backwards compatibility is such a huge let down! It’ll render my PS3 games unplayable! I dont want to have to buy them again just so I can download them to PS4, if I’ve already bought them, why should I pay for them again?

  40. Magic Ayrton

Driveclub may look good but I doubt the physics will worth anything.. therefore I will need GT6 before buying the console.. it looks very promising though and the presentation was great.

  41. Monatsende

Everybody`s talking about “PS4”. Does that mean they rejected “Orbis” as official name. If not they missed the momentum to introduce it.

    1. hotdogxx60

I know it’s a Playstation exclusive title but now the hardware has changed and the PS4 has the same insides as a PC it means that the coding will simular if not the same as PC based games so it could easily run on the PC platform. It just depends on Sony if they go that way, good for Polyphony as they will broaden their market but maybe not for Sony.

  42. machschnel

It’s a sad day when this is considered “news”, especially when that day was the announcement of the PS4. I’m not even surprised I’m disappointed, and thats disappointing in itself.

  43. Praggia

I can’t help but think that all this fan fare is all about getting the jump on Microsoft as far as the next edition of the playstation goes, like Microsoft did when launching the Xbox 360. So i expect to see Microsoft revealing their next console in the coming months which i am pretty sure is going to be a serious rival. Sony is desperately trying to win back market share as sales figures have shown they pretty much been dismal for the past few years.

Let us hope they have invested enough to make the PS3 one very very serious piece of hardware.

    1. mistersafeway

Dismal sales figures for the last few years? Worldwide more PS3s have been sold than 360s in the last few years and current estimates show the PS3 as slightly ahead overall.

  44. Drevenger

The video is disappointing, everyone seems totally clueless. Except the social part of it wich is kinda lame. My definition of sharing is free roam MMO style not Tweeter or pffftbook

If I’m a business partner of Sony I’m not sure its convincing enough. The spec are impressive but I’ve herd this story before.. at a price.

  45. 2012GT325

There would now be no excuse as to the limitations of the system. All games, including of course the next Gran Turismo, need to be mind-blowing and awesome. Holiday 2013 can’t come soon enough!!!

    1. KilzoneStrife

Their probably still working on a cooling solution. The December 2012 dev kits had 4GB of GDDR5, now its set in stone they upped it to 8GB GDRR5. So expect the actual box to be at E3.
That Driveclub game is literally made with the old dev kits. It had a basic A8CPU and a HD6770GPU. So,. just imagine GT6 revealed with use of the latest dev kit :)

    1. HarVee

That’s quite a null statement. You can’t just sit there and say that GT6 “will blow our minds” when not one of us has even seen it.

    2. Tenacious D

I’ll tell you what will be mindblowing enough.

More than 16 cars on track at once, perhaps 32. Multiclass racing. Proper dynamic lighting, meaning realistic shadows, as well as headlights which project light on ALL the visible cars. And without horrid looking particle effect jaggies. And tracks, as Lucas Ordonez mentioned, lots of tracks.

    3. Foxiol

Exactly Mr Tenacius D. GT6 Will blow our minds. After looking at how Driver Club looked…even more. Gran Turismo series is the flagship game of Sony…it will deliver.

  46. KilzoneStrife

Not just simple.. support X86 and Open GL, it WILL be the EASIEST next gen console to make games for. the GDRR5 makes Kaz’s life so easy!

    1. BkS

If they support OpenGL everything will be made better!

Hell, I’m sure someone will find a way to run PC games on the thing as it’s a x86 CPU.

  47. KilzoneStrife

    8GB of GDDR5…. my word..
If Kaz built GT5 with a measly 0.23TFlop console and 250MB of video ram and 260mb of system ram…
What will he do with 2TFlops?!?!? And 8GB of GDDR5????

PS4 is literally 10 times the power of PS4 .
and has 16 times more ram than PS3!
    Also, being integrated unified GDDR5….
it will actually be the best ram solution in the world.

    1. tomkorbin80

yea i see new ps4 controller but didnt show up ps4 console hope e3 in june if there show gt6also i am not sure if work my steering wheel [ DFGT ] with ps4 and gt6?? i saw new game name drive club it almost forza motorspots 4

    2. TokoTurismo

Maybe Sony is saving the PS4 to be shown at E3 2013, just like GT6. :D I hope your wheel still be able to work on the PS4, it’ll be perfect. :)

    3. BkS

I’m pretty sure they’ll support “legacy” wheels. I have a DFGT myself, and so support for it should be better than that of the PS3! Especially if the new PS4 is using a true x86 CPU.

  48. HuskyGT

Why do I feel that games will no longer be disc based? This could mean the end for gaming for a lot of people without an internet access.

Unless games won’t be discs anymore and some sort of card like in the Vita. I somehow feels it will be something like that.

    1. Nissan Lover

Maybe because it is changing to be that way. I’m not really liking the “without discs” future. Especially there is more to go wrong in the process.

    1. SZRT Ice

Hope they do a PS3 ver. as well as Bungie is doing with Diablo and other developers are doing with there games. Would be the 1st semi-multiplatform GT game to date.

    2. TokoTurismo

GT6 would sell like hot cakes too, but I don’t know. People are constantly complaining about the flaws in GT5…

    3. Tenacious D

The PS3, good as it still is, has GT5 bumping up against the performance headroom constantly. Every time I see a particle effect jaggie or missing headlight cone, I yearn for PS4. GT6 will never be in my PS3.

    1. Praggia

Not backwards compatible with PS3 games unfortunately so hang onto your PS3. However you will be able to stream older previous gen titles though, which makes zero sense at all.

  49. sparkytooth

This might mean that Kaz and the PD team may be able to make GT6 faster due to the ‘ease of development’ for it.Guys GT6 is closer than you guys think I guess.

  50. DigitalBaka

I’m excited. Lots of possibilities with this new hardware and the way things will be integrated into a total experience. I wonder just how much influence the developers (like Kaz) had in what the new specs and features will be. Surely many with a vision of where games can go we’re involved in planning.

    1. SZRT Ice

Last 15 seconds of in-game content I believe is what they stated. Hardly a “capture device”/YouTube replacement.

    1. Foxiol

That´s the spirit. Save and you can buy it. I did that when I was as young as you (now I´m 27…well actually 28 in 4 days hehe) so I could buy anything I wanted…sometimes now when you don´t have enough money saving is the best way.

Put money in a safe place and never touch it. It will “grow”. ;)

    2. Quakebass

Yup, that’s how I amounted cash for my PS2, PS3, and GoPro Hero 3… That’s the majority of what I’ve spent my money on, amazingly…

      Ahh… Back when I was young and I though $100 for an already out-dated PS2 was expensive…

    1. NoizeboyMugen

Sorry to disappoint you but it was just the announcement of the ps4 not an unveiling. I think Sony wanted to give the public a little something to look forward to is all.

  51. QuikSlvr223

“…while speaking about the ease at which content can be developed for it.”
You can’t help but think: how would he know how easy it is to develop a game for the PS4 without doing it first? Does this mean that he’s made progress with GT6?

    1. Quakebass

      DEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKITDEVKIT.

PD (as well as many other developers) have had “developer kits” sent to them from Sony. These are early representations of the final hardware, basically for early testing. That’s how launch titles work. Sony gives updated dev kits as more finalized hardware becomes available. Early PS4 dev kits have been rumored to be going around to first party teams since (I believe) 2009 or 2010…

    2. SZRT Ice

Plus Kaz is an “in-house” Sony developer, which means he may have known hardware specifications LONG before it’s release. A dev-kit is basically the PS4 console without the aesthetics. Simply put, the engine, frome, seat, and wheels without the body/outer shell.

    3. QuikSlvr223

Exactly, he likely wouldn’t be using a dev kit unless GT6 was already in development. I mean, we all knew that it already was, but he may have made some significant progress in development (my reasoning for that being, you can’t just put in one line of code and say, “Well that was easy!” You can’t know without actually getting places in the game development).

  52. LR-MR-Cole

GT5 is dead. Chaulk it up as a failure and now all work focuses on gt6. FAIL FAIL FAIL was hoping for another farewell DLC but guess not. Kaz promised alot of stuff and did not follow threw like standards to premiums… oh wait the XKR 9 and beattle i forgot I forgive ya. I wont have gt6 for three years from now. GT5 came out 2010 and bought ps3 the day before gt5 release for $320 and thats after 5 years being on the market. I only make 50,000 a year not enough for a ps4

    1. TomBrady

DEAD? HAHAHAHAHA you fangirls are hilarious man, there’s no racing out there with as many people online as there is on GT5 everyday, not even close. Dead, HAHAHA tard

    2. LR-MR-Cole

Tom Brady sucks Kapernik’s better. Anyways online is horrible its drag and show PATHETIC. And even if people do race they race dirty or they suck. No compition in a spec , online or in forums

  53. daus26

Well if we go by Amar’s poem, and that one mysterious member in the GT6 forum, so far they’re right, in the sense that we won’t see any GT6 till E3 at least.

    1. daus26

It was, but to be honest, the car models didn’t look that much better (if it was) then GT5’s premium. They talk about details on the stiches and such, but that’s all been done with PD. The environment, of course, was beautiful though.

    2. Quakebass

It was more textures and lighting in that game than polygon count – I could see the edges in the lights. But the fibers and roughness in the metal showed, and to my knowledge, that has NEVER been done in a game. PD may have realistic looking interiors, but not to that level. Not even Forza 4 came close to it.

    3. TomBrady

I saw edges on the lights and other things but they were nicely smoothed. The graphics looked awesome and I’ll give the game a shot even if it’s arcade but I’m positive GT6 will have much better graphics. PD always sets the benchmark on every console, and they probably would’ve had the best graphics on last generation if they didn’t go for 60 FPS. The only better looking games in my opinion were Uncharted 2/3, and God of War 3 and those didn’t run 60 FPS. Long story short, PD has some of the best graphical artists on earth, and racing games are much lower on resources than other game types so GT6 will probably be the best looking game on PS4 for a few years.

The main concern with GT6 for me is how far they will go into the simulation category. I thought they did a great job making GT5 realistic and accessible but the went about it the wrong way. They compromised the physics to make the game accessible for controller users instead of using powerful driving aids for the casuals. If they made a full simulation that would rival PC sims, but made sure the driver aids didn’t allow controller users/wheel noobs to be faster, implemented a safety rating or other methods to guarantee clean racing and had mechanical damage on at all times, and got rid of all the tire selections in public lobbies, I’d probably stop playing PC sims.

    4. infamousphil

      WARNING, WARNING, WARNING…

Beware the ‘video shopping’? I’m not hating but I cain’t accept what I see (pre-release video) from videothese developers as actual game play video graphics. And on that note, I’m glad GT6 was absent.

Call me cheap or whatever you’d like… but GT6’s absence probably means it’s going to be released on the PS3 because it was never meant to be?

Would you be happy with a 500 to 700 premium car garage, with all of GT5’s tracks plus Route 11, Seattle and New York (all with full time and weather control), improved AI and a return to hp/kg rating?… PP will never work for me.

I could stand to wait 2-3 years for GT7.

  54. JapanElite

PD is really gonna have to do something for GT6 and not make the mistakes they have made and are still making in GT5.

    1. Foxiol

At E3…if you took a look at the conference and saw what DriverClub will be…it won´t be competing with Gran Turismo series. It will be what people asked for but what GT isn´t. A free roam game with incredible visuals (that sorry but kicked pCARS´s a**).

I can see that at E3 Sony has still the best to show us…Gran Turismo 6 will be better than most of us expect. In some many ways…

Just be patient. Play Station 4 is here, Releasing in November probably.

    2. Quakebass

Yes, I don’t think Sony would want to show us absolutely everything here at this event – so GT could show up at E3 (I really hope it’s that close), and then likely something from Naughty Dog. And there’s plenty that was shown here that wasn’t shown in detail.

    3. SZRT Ice

If they can hide the CONSOLE itself from us yet still release it by the years end, then please beleive they are also hiding a triple A launch day line-up.

      Amar’s poem:

Once the six skip the three – Once the GT6 skips the PS3
Saving for the four – Saving (itself) for the PS4
Question stays about the five – questions will remain about GT5
Waiting for some more – waiting for some more (info?/dlc?)

Due the fact we knew too much
About the four and five – Due to the fact we know too much about PS4 and GT5 (PS4 specs, controller specs, and certain functionalities were leaked in advance and we knew about GT5′s creation, release date, and plans, all along GT5′s preproduction & post production cycle)

Six will hide until it can
Kevin Butlers’ Jive – GT6 will hide until Kevin Butler’s jive. (E3 Presentation)

It’s six step left six step right
Rinse, repeat and wait – ????

The three will get some finger food
And four will celebrate. – The PS3 will get some swan song releases and PS4 will start/rock the house with a full fledged blockbuster lineup. – Alternate by bpa94

In regards to the last two lines im guessing some sort of demo coming to the ps3 (prologue perhaps?) and the full fledged version will release on the ps4.
