Formula One Announces Live Subscription Service, F1 TV

Formula One has officially announced its over the top (OTT) platform, F1 TV. Set to launch early in the 2018 season, the service will offer fans a commercial-free viewing of each race.

Additionally, F1 TV offers access to all 20 driver onboard cameras. This is good news as it means fans will no longer rely on the world feed director to tune back to an interesting battle. F1 TV Pro takes things a step further by having unique feeds not available elsewhere.

As expected of an on-demand service, subscribers will have full access to the content. Practice, qualifying and races are all offered live, alongside pre and post-race activities. Moreover, subs will have access to several support series as well, including Formula 2, GP3 and Porsche Supercup.

Director of Digital and New Business for the F1 Group, Frank Arthofer explains:

“With the launch of F1 TV, we are beginning on the journey to build a cornerstone of our digital transformation. F1 TV subscription products are clearly and centrally aimed at our hardest core fans, and we are firm believers that while we are bringing a new audience to the sport, we must always remain focused on delivering products and experiences that serve the most avid F1 fans.

“Our objective with F1 TV is simple: provide these fans with the best available service to watch live Grands Prix and provide them with the best sports OTT customer experience in the world. Our team and our partners are singularly focused on delivering on that vision: not just for launch but over the long-term. Live streaming video is an exciting space changing almost daily.”

The service arrives in nearly two dozen markets and will be available in four languages. Desktop and web applications are the initial targets at launch. Mobile and TV apps will come down the line at no extra cost and will include such options as Amazon and Apple TV.

Pricing for F1 TV Pro begins at $8-12 USD on a monthly basis, with annual rates priced according to location. An alternative, cheaper subscription, F1 TV Access, will also be on offer. While not offering live race coverage, in its place is live race timing data, radio commentary, and extended race highlights.

Even better, archive footage accompanies the Access subscription, bolstering its appeal. While not explicitly confirmed, we suspect Pro subscribers can also access this feature. In contrast to F1 TV Pro, F1 TV Access launches on a near-global basis.
