Upgraded my parents computer from a single 80gb hard drive to 2x 250gb drives. One for backups.

Also started configuring their router to join a VPN WAN I'm trying to get up and running.

After my Main PC had a bit of a Melt down..............

Replaced the Hard drive with a 1TB Samsung thingy that spins at 7.200 coz it was cheap

Replaced the Motherboard with a ASUS M5A97PRO

Replaced the CPU with a FX4100 AMD

Reinstalled Win 7 64 bit

Installed 8 gb of Hyper X Memory

Replaced the CPU Cooler with a Artic Fan

Clocked CPU an used Prime to torture it for a few hours .

End result is a Steady overclock @ 4.4ghz temps in the 48 range when running at full load

There again i'm running 6 fans just to be safe an praying this one don't meltdown like the last one did :nervous:

^^^^... or clock it down for security?

Anyway, I had to scrap that old computer server as it was a bit loud and was gonna get really quite hot even when I found a PSU that ran a lot quieter. Seems that the CPU fan wouldn't go any slower than 7,000 RPM and emitted this shriek all the time.... . Found out that the other old computer that I thought was dead, wasn't dead.

Well, it came alive when I used the jumpers. Which isn't ideal. It seems that the Happy Button (ON button) wasn't really sending any signal to the motherboard to make it run. But it does mean that when it goes off, there's no way to revive it unless you use a screwdriver to jump it. Hm.

However, that can't be used as a print and file server when I have an old laptop that runs quieter and can easily be hidden.

Time again (tomorrow) to configure it as a server and see if I can run CRON jobs on it (laptop has Xubuntu on it) to make it work at specific times. Or WoL compatible.... hm, choices.

Sounds a lot like my build! What's your video card? Lemme know how you go as far as benchies and gaming. :D

EDIT: Put together another build to sell off. Specs:

AMD Sempron (no idea on the clock speed, havn't booted into the bios yet to find out)
1GB DDR 400MHz RAM
40GB HDD
Onboard Graphics
Acer stock motherboard (don't know the models)
250W Acer PSU

Gonna ask about $100AUD for this one. Just a decent starter or web surfing computer.

Sounds like the switch itself broke. You can replace it on some computers.

More fans =/= better cooling.
I played around for hours with fan placement/direction/speed before settling on what I have. Your temps seem fine, though it is winter time, so you should be good.
Do the 4x00 series CPUs run cool or what? No arctic cooler heatsink I know of is above average but I'm also not sure how easily the cpu clocks.

Checked why my living room PC started hanging from time to time.
Excessive RAM test running, if that fails installing Windows again on another HDD

Yes, I came to that conclusion as well. I am debating what to do with it actually as I already got 2 desktops (1 old and 1 being my normal one) in my room, 2 old laptops running Linux variants (testing server usability) and 1 new laptop.

I do know that my parents would like to have a music centre in the conservatory. Probably sort it out for that instead. Just that switch will have to be sorted first! Maybe connected with a touch screen monitor as well....

Added a Asus Xonar Essence STX Sound Card.

It's the card on the top. Above the 2 590's.
Not wanting to drain both water loops, I had to take the mounting bracket off of the sound card to slide it behind the tubes, then re-assemble the audio card while it was behind the tubes and tighten it up. It was a pain.

Had quite a time getting things to work properly but will get into more detail in my headphone thread.

I thought some of you might get a kick out of this. Been setting up a new DC with a vSphere setup blah blah boring stuff, but I thought this was pretty rad when I checked out the resources available.

And no it can't play Crysis.

 Yes, totally rad dude!

Go into a panic attack when my 2TB external drive's filesystem 🤬 its self randomly.
So since 10am(it is 8:30pm now) i have been running a getdataback scan on it to get my data back.

Starting the extraction now.

Laptop: Install Kubuntu then installed OpenSuse on my laptop and now trying to fix the dual boot that opensuse 🤬

Found the fault on the living room PC, HDD was finished.
Good there were some 500GB HDDs in spare.
Windows is installed, updates are running ... Hmm, now back on the sofa

Added a new 300gb Intel SSD for my second game storage drive. The 80gb SSD is always filling up on me.

When I need to reinstall my OS, I will run my two 80gb SSD's in a Raid for OS and have my 300gb SSD for secondary storage on this OS.

I have been running dual OS's for some time and am about to dump my primary OS. Anyways, I have a bit of a cluster at the moment but will sort it all out eventually. :D

Successfully migrated our firm's mail server ready for a DNS swap.

Cause for celebration! :D

Card is a XFX Radeon 6850 , not bothered about benchmarks as the game I play on the PC prefers to have a Fast CPU , so far nothing has melted .

I did get a stable OC of 4.6ghz but backed it down to 4.4ghz not had any bluescreens so i'm gonna leave it as is .

Replaced the MoBo, CPU and RAM on my computer:

Apparently the system is working well so I probably won't be reinstalling Windows. Got to test some more games to be sure.

Wait... you changed all that and didn't reinstall windows????!!!

Good luck with that!

Thanks to changes in Windows 7 (I believe Vista too, but I skipped that, so I can't speak from experience) it's very possible, and without using Sysprep. The most extreme case is a friend who switched from AMD to Intel when he went Z68/Core i7 and he didn't have to reinstall Windows. Obviously we had to handle the drivers, but it did boot.

My transition from P45/Core 2 Quad to Z68/Core i7 was also quite smooth. The system has been running well for months.

did this 2 days ago but I just gotta tell, I installed windows 8 beta build 8250, blows windows 7 like a hummer to a 1968 Fiat 500, best windows on earth. For free too, the best price, everybody has to try it, still downloading all the 78 free apps onto my computer. Final verdict: WINDOWS 7 ON SOME SERIOUS STERIODS !

Yeah I was using an AMD-based system too. My CPU was an Athlon 64 x2 5200+, pretty dated stuff.

Like I said I'll try it some more cause I didn't get to stress it much last night but I don't think I'll have any problems.

Your literally the only person I've heard that likes Windows 8 over 7...and why would I download and switch everything just for it to expire not too long from now, no thanks you.

GPU started overheating yesterday for no reason at all (Well, I'm sure there is a reason but haven't bothered looking at it yet).

Installed a baller custom cooling solution.

Dropped load temps 15C.

I made a virtual operating system in Powerpoint. :) If anbody wants to see it, ill put up screenshots. It....

Can go on the internet with a browser I made
Has a notepad that automatically saves
Has a boot, login, log off, and other screens!
