An 18 year old, working at a car dealership, doesn't know about a fun car like the 86, FRS, and BRZ? I'm having a hard time believing that.

I know right. Well I was told he was 18 off of his co-worker...

If this is the kind of experience that people are going to have at the Scion dealer, I'm not particularly impressed. I understand that Pure Price is pretty much set in stone, but you don't have to be a dick about it. After all, this is Michigan, and who the hell doesn't get a discount at at least one of the American brands? Even if I get this promotion at work, and have the money to buy it, I won't be going through this guy.

Is this common in the US?

A month ago my dad bought his new car at our local Mercedes dealership, me and my mom went with him to get the car. We were offered free coffee and snacks while we were waiting, the Salesman even gave my mom flowers. This was the first time I was present when a car was bought so I dont have much expierence.

btw, here in germany the GT86 costs -without any options- 30k euro... Totally overpriced. I don`t know about the BRZ`s prize, but im sure it will be more expensive. For 30k I could buy myself a 6 months to 2 years old Z4, 3 series coupe or SLK (well none of them is great as the GT86 but still competitors)...
Ok, im still not finished with studying, but in 8 months I should be and I hope that I will be able to afford a GT86 then (I want a new and not used one), but maybe I will choose the Mercedes CLA (which will be released by then) over it... :D I know, its FF, but it has stunning looks, I love Mercedes and its probably cheaper then a new GT86 here in germany (the CLA is going to cost 27 to 28k €, but sadly the next gen c-class is going to be more expensive).

Probably because the value of the Euro has bombed. I imagine many imported cars are at a similair price disadvantage.

I had a great experience with my scion dealer. They gave us free coffee and doughnuts. Not quite flowers, but something i've noticed is it seems like some of you are going into the dealership to try and outsmart the salesmen. I could be wrong. But who knows, maybe i just got a good dealer by my house.

Sorry if I sound like a homer.

Yeah but a Miata costs ~8k less, is great to drive and has a hardtop.

How much does a Miata cost in the US?

I think every dealer has free coffee/donuts/bagels.

The miata hardtop costs about the same if not a lil more than the frs if I recall. I think you euro guys have different engine options than us.

I believe it is at parity with the BRZ, around $28k for the folding hardtop.

Still haven't seen a BRZ in person but the FRS with optional sound system came in at a sticker price (after destination, etc.) of only $26,100. At 28k I'm guessing Subby is just trying to capitalize on customer loyalty. :indiff:

R1600Turbo Two things I could care less about.

Or it has HIDs and Nav standard.

Good point dsgerbc. 👍

R1600turbo,
I couldn't care less about those options, would much rather have no navigation system (didn't get one in my car either). :p

That's ridiculous to be honest when some aftermarket systems can be just as good or better for a fraction of the price. HID systems too...

If speed is all that matters, a soft-top MX-5 with the 2.0 and a five-speed is probably the best combination... though the heavy PRHT does add quite a bit of chassis rigidity.

Please refer me to a decent aftermarket HID set-up that costs fraction of the price (2x oem BRZ HID with ballasts etc will run about 1700 from the dealer).
Decent means lenses designed for HID light pattern + everything else, not just ballasts that are stuck into projector/reflector optics designed for halogen bulbs.
The cheapest decent/proper option - is scoring some used OEM HID lenses and manually transplanting those into the housings. And even this option will be pushing a >6-7 hundred at least.
I'm not too big on HIDs (and was perfectly happy with Legacy OEM projectors + some decent halogen bulbs), but some people are.

Or, get a mount for your smartphone. It drives me bonkers when I see people buying cars with navigation, or getting a Garmin for their vehicle when all of the hardware/software is in their iPhone or Android handset...

When GM announced that their new system will connect to and use the service(s) on your phone, it was a FINALLY! moment for me.

No he hasn't. At the same time, ASSISTED GPS is just that, a helping hand. Whether he has cell coverage or not doesn't matter since cell towers only help satellites triangulate your position a touch quicker.
The awful GPS chips that all android phones seem to use are a bigger problem than coverage, anyway. No, flashing USA GPS tables doesn't make it any less awful.

I'm not sure about the crazy selling part. In chicago, I've seen maybe 3 or 4 when the car launched, and rarely see them now.

Might be better in Cali. I've just heard they're doing really well with it. Europe too.

Surprisingly, European and U.S. MX5s are pretty much identical. Same 2.0 engine, same options and everything. Only difference is, we also get a more basic 1.8-engined car. I've only ever driven the 2.0s so I'm not sure what the 1.8 is like. Expect it's roughly as fun, just slower.

^You haven't driven to enough places ;)

That's why it's not an issue for me.:sly:

But honestly I've driven the eastern and western coasts, and Verizon hasn't dissappointed me yet.

Really enjoyed that vid, thanks for posting. Good to see an assessment of the car over different disciplines - not just on twisty roads or the track, but both of those as well as driving around town and doing long distances.

Still looks like a car I could really get on with day-to-day. Probably just economical enough, but comfortable on longer trips and fun on the roads that matter. Can't help thinking that even if 200bhp is enough (and it is, realistically), maybe a little more low-revs torque wouldn't hurt, but other than that it's definitely my sort of car.

Vid was good but the view of the steering wheel was deceptive, the view for a 6'0" male is much worse and the wheel is much smaller compared to the instrument panel; it's one of the only complaints I have with smaller steering wheels (and one of my only complaints about the FR-S after having sat down in the driver's seat).

I've only sat in one at a motor show, but at 5'9" the driving position was about as perfect as it gets for me.

Yeah, I think I'd wait for more grunt down low.

I'd normally be a bit hesitant to say I'd want something turbocharged in there, but maybe a 1.6 turbo would have been better than a 2.0 NA for this application. Would still have around 200bhp, but a bit more grunt low down. Expect it might have added to the cost a little, however. These new turbo engines are great, but not exactly cheap.
