Had this idea in my head after I watched the 1976 film 'The Gumball rally' which was in iPlayer the other week.

My idea was to have a race with the cars from the film ( or the closest match on GT5 ) as it's quite varied regarding manufacturers therefore I reckon it could be a fun race which has a theme to it.

Edit; first race times, dates and participation as of 20th May:

The first race will not be this weekend due to the PSN problem. If the network goes up again on this weekend we might have a quick practice/ testing.

The race is now scheduled for the following weekend:
Sunday 22th May 16:00 GMT start.

The race itself:

We have 7 'teams' who each have one of the cars, each person will modify their car to meet the regulations then we'll run the race ( whatever structure ) twice ( one race for each person in each team using the same car ) and to find the winning team average the two team members finishing times.

The restrictions/ rules:

-Clean racing ( and chat pls for those with mics ) .
-Same tyre across the field, sports soft.
-No TCS, no SRF.
-PP limit is 530. Use of the power limiter to achieve that limit will be considered cheating! To reach the PP level the use of ballast is allowed and indeed needed for the Cobra. You won't need to use it for any other models though, unless you've gone one or two pp over the limit accidentally.

The first race, run with 1 member from each team will be at Nurburgring. Your finish time here will be added to the finish time of the other person on your team after the second race to give your teams final time.

After that race will be a short break, giving us a chance to post in here or chat on psn about the race.

The second race will be run with the ppl who haven't raced yet and will be on a generated course with no practice laps. It's up to each team to decide between themselves who will run which race.

The list of drivers is currently:

I would like to join in if the times suit me. I would use the AC Cobra as they are my all time favourite car :)

sat/sun daytime does work for me.

Double posting like a pro. But I guess this doubles as a bump :)

Excellent, good to have some interest :)

I've been looking at the car list again and checking times on Nurburgring, I think that's the best track for this tbh.

I think we're looking at 7 cars for this race:

'66 Ford Shelby Cobra
'69 Z28 Camaro
'54 Mercedes Benz 300SL
'76 512bb
'87 RUF Yellowbird
'70 Charger
'61 Jaguar E type

I found all did times around 8 mins and I think they can all be competitive using the same type of tyres.

The Cobra is 526pp with full ballast, all but two of the other cars can reach the same level so I think 530pp limit should be used- without the need for different tyres.
That Jag is 509pp full mod, had rebuild/ restore.
The Merc is 492pp full mod, new car.

Now if we're looking at 7 cars we need either 7 or 14 drivers, new list to copy and paste:

Cobra Team
1 TeamLotus_Europa
2
Camaro Team
3 ej2d15
4
Mercedes Team
5
6
Ferrari Team
7
8
Porsche Team
9
10
Dodge Team
11
12
Jaguar Team
13
14

I've put my name next to a team, but I'm happy to switch to any car to help the race if need's be- so there's still two places on Camaro if needed.

This does sound like a fun idea. Races with different styles of cars seem to peek my interest, with the different advantages each have. I'm interested in trying it. First choice would be the Camaro. Second probaly the Dodge, but as a suggestion switching the Charger to a Challenger painted white with a black hood would make a sweet police car

When is this event possibly set to take place? This weekend is Easter if I'm not mistaken. I'm also building my schedule around the Stanley Cup Playoffs. I'd be provisionally interested though, and would be available for any team since I have any/all of those cars.

Mudd yeah the premium challenger ( not race mod though ) would be fine if everyone is happy with that- I just painted mine white and added unpainted carbon bonnet to see what that's like- looks fine :)
It's different advantages between the cars, then to add to the uncertainty if we get two ppl per team then for each race the same car will most likely be tuned differently hehe.
Thinking about it there could be prize structure of; 1st place- winning team, 2nd place- fastest race winner of the two races, 3rd place- winner of the slower time race.. good idea?

EivlEvo I don't have a date set yet- I intend to edit the second post here with the race details. I'll not add your name to the list until a confirmed date ye?

I might tune my cars to the pp limit and set them to share if anyone wants to try out the cars without spending credits.

Ta ppl.

This is the second best movie of all time (Le Mans is first)
I would be interested in running it, but I have a suggestion.

What if, we did standings were based on total race time for each race.
Then we could score it like the Tour de France.
Your total race time for each race is added together and whoever has the quickest total time at the end, wins!

I am fan of this film and I wish to take part of. I need just the confirmation of day time. And please, put me in the number 11 Dogde team, I would love to race with my challenger '70.... sarturdays evenings suits me fine.
Cheers

My mate might join me in Team Cobra :)

Edit: I will watch this film when I get home

By the way, is there any chance we could limit the tyres to sports hards? I think that would be more of a challenge. And you could let the slower cars use sports meds

TeamLotus_Europa I'll reserve that spot for your mate but can you let us know asap if he can race, ta.

gogatrs what team would you like to be on? Good suggestion there- probably go with that. Thanks for the offer to host but I'm happy doing so- can I count on you as a back-up host for this first race though and also if we repeat the race you can host that?

Tyre choice can be changed but on less than racing tyres I reckon there's even less need to change them for the lower powered cars- I did a lap with 5 secs difference in finish time between the Cobra and the Merc on racing hard- 'worse' tyres would make it harder in the Cobra?

I'm thinking we should hold off on tire choice until we set up a few more teams. A nice long 'Track day' practice session should make the tire choice easy. Matching the car colors is a neat idea to, but I'll tell you now, our Camaro is gonna be a much cooler looking shade of of yellow then that! :p

I love that movie! count me in, I'd prefer racing on evenings in the middle of the week but i think i could squeeze it in on weekends as well.

I'm in team Ferrari.

You should try using the online track generator to create some random long tracks on toscana and eifel. That way it would be more like driving real roads and nobody would have an advantage based on track knowledge. Do a series of races and add up everybody's total time, quickest wins. :)

Like the idea, if i remember correctly there is some toscana-like roads/surroundings in the movie. And with adding the times it would be more like we really drive across America. :) Maybe we could have a maximum time for every track if any driver would miss a race it won't ruin the whole series.

The gumball is a race from one place to another. Across North America, or Europe. In that spirit, an idea:

Pick a series of tracks and the order to run them. Each week the race should be about the same length of time (an hour or two, perhaps) long.

The start times are staggered. On week one, if you finish three seconds behind the winner, then you wait three seconds to start on week two.

I think the cars should be stock or with very minimal modifications (sport intake, catalytic converter).

As to the team drivers, maybe the drivers drive every other week. Basically each driver take a stage of the rally.

Thanks for the input guys, at this rate we'll have enough names down for a race the weekend 30th April!

Many of the cars we are using are in completey different performance categories. Keeping them close to stock we be good for making our rally realistic, but it wouldn't make for a very fun race. I think an agreed upon PP limit is the only fair way to go as far as the upgrades on the cars

Maybe we should have a test race to see how even the cars really are? nothing official, just trying the cars out.

I was thinking Saturday, but if ppl are gonna be busy across the weekend then we might try for the following Saturday, and if we've a full field the race on the Sunday?

This sounds fun. I'd love to dust off my Jag for this...

And /agree with whoever suggested trying course generator to try to come up with some courses to give the feel of going cross-country..

/\ that was me! :)
I think in order for it to be authentic it needs to be done as a total time over a series of short races, add up all the times from the races and the driver with the quickest overall elapsed time is the winner. That would be similar to driving one really long distance, aka cross country. If somebody's willing to keep track of the time and do the math you could do staggered starts too, like 1 driver takes off every 10 seconds or something.

With the course generator you can get tracks that are up to 7 miles long on Toscana, and that would be one heckuva challenge! Especially since the track would be new to everyone. Maybe do 10 minutes of practice before each stage to learn the track just a bit and then go racing!

Doing multiple long races at different speedways wouldn't have that rally feel. On a true rally you'd rarely (if ever) go over the same stretch of road twice, so doing 20-30 lap races would kinda ruin it. If you're able to make a long track with the course generator you could set it for 2 or 3 laps, since they would be long and unfamiliar it wouldn't feel like you were driving the same stretch of road 2 or 3 times. Each lap would hopefully be 3-4 minutes, so each stage would be about 10-15 minutes. But you could do 2-3 of these in one event, and then you'd really feel like you were going somewhere! Eifel can produce some 5+ mile tracks too, so they would be good for a change of scenery. Mt. Aso is just too short (all tracks are under 2 miles) so it wouldn't be of much use unless it's used sparingly.
