Steward's Notes:

The idea for this event comes courtesy of mcfizzle (Scott). 👍 And yes I know we should have done this last month on the actual day of the real event. :dunce:

Both cars used in this event are standard models and not tradeable meaning acquiring them is not as simple as we'd like. If you are running the GT class hopefully you read our advanced notice and purchased the C5 when it was available in the OCD a few weeks ago. However, if you do not have either car in your garage here's how you can obtain each:
  • Bentley Speed 8 '03: Won in the seasonal British lightweights championship. A 5 race championship series that should not take long to win for drivers with the skill to handle an LMP car for 2.4 hours. :sly:
  • Corvette C5-R '00: Obtained by redeeming a level 22 ticket (for which there are only 6 cars so odds are good). If you need a level 22 ticket you can request one on this thread and then you can "cycle" the ticket until you get the desired car.

Please note that the stewards are considering issuing special mixed class racing guidelines for the high speed banked sections of the track and the bus stop. Whether these guidelines are published/enforced and the exact parameters will depend on testing and practice sessions over the next couple weeks.

Otherwise, this event is using basically the same formula as previous enduros:
  • There is no minimum qualifying speed for the LMP class, however race stewards reserve the right to disqualify a driver if they do not consistently maintain car control and a safe pace.
  • LMP and GT qualifying runs will include 2 hot laps.
  • There are specific rules/procedures to address the scenario where the leader takes the checkered flag while a driver is in the pits.
  • Qualifying Times will not be published until the respective class qualification deadline is reached. Drivers are allowed to share their own times via PM or other private communications and others can observe their runs with permission from the driver, but qualification lap times or any information that be used to derive lap times should not be posted/discussed in the thread.
  • Posting/discussing practice lap times, tunes and driving techniques is encouraged although not required.
  • Late qualification will be accepted, but with no chance to race in room A should the need arise to use two rooms for the race.
  • Safe pit road entry and exit rules. [see details post]
  • System for assigning spots on the grid in the event we have too many drivers for one lounge, but not enough for multiple lounges. Recent participation will be included in the formula to decide who gets a spot on the grid. [see details post]

Simulated Driver Change

pitcrew.jpg

There will be one mandated (simulated) driver change during the race which must take place in a specified time window. To simulate the change a driver will pause during a regular pit stop for 5 minutes. The time window is long enough that it will throw some interesting dynamics into the race and it will also allow the participants to take a small break during the race for a stretch, drink or a real life pit stop during this challenging event.

Specifics:
  1. To begin the simulated driver change enter the pits as normal during the driver change window (race clock between 1:00:00 to 1:30:00).
  2. Begin the pit stop as normal allowing AI to take over and then selecting tires and added fuel amount and select OK
  3. After that screen is dismissed hit "Start" which will show the options buttons ("resume", "chat", "options" and "exit").
  4. As long as you see those option buttons you will not be released from your pits. Do not click any buttons including chat or you will be released when you dismiss that screen.
  5. The AI will drive the car into your pit stall and begin your normal pit stop. At this point you should be watching the race timer and the crew member with the release flag.
  6. When the flag man raises the release lollipop, your 5 minute wait officially begins.
  7. Note the race clock time (or current lap time) and write it down. Manually add 5 mins and write down this time which is when you can leave the pit.
  8. Take a break, stretch, pat your dog and do whatever else makes you feel refreshed.
  9. After the target time has been reached on the race timer hit start and proceed with the remainder of your race.

Driver Change Verification and Infractions:
  • All driver changes will be reviewed and penalties applied for improper execution before the results will become official.
  • If you do not serve the total 5 minutes a double time penalty will be applied to your finish time. e.g. if you serve only 4 minutes then 2 minutes will be added to your finish time.
  • If you accidentally leave the pits early you can avoid a penalty by returning to the pits and serving all of the remaining time on the *very next* lap.
  • Any driver that doesn't attempt a proper driver change will be DQ'd and removed from the official results.

Qualifying

Drivers can attempt to qualify for either class (or both). The top qualifying drivers from each class will participate in the "A" race. Drivers who do not make the cutoff will serve as reserves for "A" and participate in a "B" race (assuming there are enough drivers to race in a second lounge). The LMP qualifying deadline is earlier so organizers can "lock down" the LMP class for race "A". Drivers that do not qualify for room "A" in the LMP class can attempt to qualify for room "A" in the GT class. If space is available in the LMP class after the LMP deadline additional drivers can qualify, but cannot displace any drivers that qualified before the deadline and will not be able to qualify for room A.

Qualifying will take place during the two weeks prior to the race event (see windows below). Drivers can arrange ad hoc sessions with an approved steward at any time during the window. All qualifying sessions will require a steward to set up the lounge to proper specs and will consist of short "races" which are observed and verified by stewards and other drivers. Standard WRS track rules are in effect during these races and any infractions will be penalized a minimum of 2 seconds per incident unless it is beyond a reasonable doubt that the "infraction" had a negative impact on the lap time. Each driver can attempt qualifying for a class only once (one shot per class).

New Qualifying Rules:
  • A 1 second penalty will be added to any lap that follows a dirty bus stop exit.
    • In other words, for a lap to be considered clean, the bus stop exit from the previous lap must be clean.
    • That includes the first lap so the exit of the bus stop on your out-lap must be clean.
    • The usual penalty of 2 seconds applies to your current lap as well so be careful on the bus stop.
    • As usual, penalties will not apply if the "incident" clearly results in a loss of time (crash/spin/etc).
  • Driving backwards is prohibited at all times during the qualification race.
    • If you mess up the bus stop you cannot go back and try again for a better run.
  • Drivers have an option for a 3rd mulligan hot lap with an automatic 1 second penalty.
    • This is being introduced to deal with the "worst case scenario" where a driver completely messes up both initial hot laps with one incident in the bus stop.
    • Drivers should only exercise this option if neither of their first two hot laps is within a second of their potential.
    • Drivers should stop on track to signal to the steward that their qualification is finished.
    • Wait for the steward to review times before you exit the quali race.

Qualification times for a class will not be published until the qualification window closes for that class. Drivers are allowed to share their own quali times via PM or other private communications and others can observe their runs with permission from the driver, but qualification lap times or any information that be used to derive quali lap times should not be posted/discussed in the thread.

Qualifying Race Procedure
  1. A race steward will set up the lounge to the proper specs for the class.
  2. The driver will be given an out lap and a single hot lap in free run for a final warm up if desired (Drivers should come to the session already warmed up and prepared).
  3. After the completion of the practice hot lap the race timer will be started.
  4. The qualifying steward and any other observers will monitor the race live to validate the run and save a replay in case of any protest.
  5. The qualifying races will consist of 5 laps: 1 un-timed out-lap + 2 timed hot-laps + 1 optional mulligan hot-lap + 1 un-timed in-lap.
  6. When the driver finishes the final hot lap he should slow down and park on track before finishing the in-lap.
  7. Lap times and any infractions will be noted and announced by the steward. For this event the fastest hot lap must be verified offline via replay before the time is official.
  8. When the driver and steward are in agreement on the recorded net lap times the driver can exit the track.
Qualifying Time
  1. The driver’s single best hot lap will determine his starting position on the grid.
  2. Any driver in either class that demonstrates in qualification or practice sessions that he cannot keep the car in control and on the track consistently or maintain a reasonable pace will not be allowed to participate in the enduro race. The stewards and event organizers will make that call if it is deemed necessary.
Miscellaneous
  • Any disagreement over infractions will be handled via replay review.
  • If a driver disconnects before finishing his first hot lap he can return to re-run a qualifying race.
  • Any lap completed (and time noted by steward) prior to DC will be counted and the lap count reduced for the 2nd attempt.
  • A driver will not be allowed to rerun a qualification lap if he DCs after damage occurs to the car in the lap, but he can rerun subsequent laps.
Qualifying Windows
  • LMP: February 7-17
  • GT: February 7-21

Scheduling a Qualifying Session

Drivers should post to the thread requesting a steward to observe their qualifying run and the day/times you would be available. To maximize the chance of making a match with a steward please provide a few times and give a bit of up front notice. Stewards may also post that they have qualifying rooms ready in case anyone is ready to qualify. During those steward prompted sessions the lounge will be set up for free run practice until someone is ready to qualify. Drivers are welcome to practice during these sessions and observe others qualification runs. All qualifying runs must take place in private lounges (not public lobbies).

Finalizing Your Class

All drivers who have attempted to qualify for the LMP class must state their class intentions by January 24th. There are three options:
  1. Commit to LMP. GT qualifying not required and any existing GT qualifying times will be disregarded.
  2. Commit to GT. GT qualifying required, LMP qualifying disregarded.
  3. Reserve LMP. GT qualifying required, LMP qualifying "reserved" pending LMP result, but driver will not be able to qualify for LMP -A.

Multiple Lounges and Guaranteed Spots on the Grid:
  • Two lounges will be run for the enduro only if the number of confirmed drivers on race day is at least 20.
  • If there are 17-19 confirmed drivers, a few will have to go on "stand by" and may not be able to race in the enduro. Note that all drivers will have the opportunity to participate in the support races.
  • In the event there are too many drivers for one lounge, but not enough for two lounges, some spots will be awarded based on qualification time and other spots awarded based on recent series participation. Five seats per class (10 total) will be awarded to the drivers will the highest level of participation* over the most recent 13 weeks (starting with event 63). The three remaining seats per class (6 total) will be awarded to the fastest qualifiers not already awarded grid spots based on participation. Grid order will be determined by qualifying time alone.

*Participation will be calculated using our results database, thus only events with official results will count toward event participation. Both weekly events and special events will be included within the recent event range.

Rolling Starts By Class

LMP cars will leave the grid first and get into a staggered formation. Pole sitter on left side and alternating all the way back. Target speed is 75 mph / 120 kph. GT cars should form up the same way shortly behind. Both fields should close ranks after exiting the final corner on the formation lap. Maintain formation lap speed until the start/finish line when the pole sitter will accelerate to race pace. All other cars should accelerate when the car in front accelerates. There should be no overlap with the car in front of you during the start. The GT pole sitter should time the start to maintain a safe gap to the LMP cars.

Mixed Class Racing Rules

Both classes must share the road and show some courtesy to the other class!

LMP Class Ground Rules:
  • Be Patient: Your job is to get around the GT class responsibly. Do not dive bomb a GT class car under braking putting them in jeopardy if you make a mistake. Understand where you car holds the advantage and utilize those areas to execute passes safely.
  • Have good situational awareness. If GT class drivers you are approaching are engaged in close battles don't expect them to stop their battle and let you go by. You may have to slow and pick your passing lines carefully. You may lose a gap you've built over a competing LMP driver, but that's the nature of multi-class racing. Everyone has a right to the road and everyone is going to get stuck behind a slower car at some point in the race.
GT Class Ground Rules:
  • Be predictable. Pick your line and and hold it. Don't suddenly change your line thinking it will allow faster cars to pass. You will just surprise them and mess up any plan they've already made to get around you. If you are taking a corner on the inside hold that line on exit and allow the LMP car to pass on the outside. If you are on an outside line in a corner, maintain that line on exit.
  • Have good situation awareness. Understand which cars and how many are around you. Is there one LMP class car attempting to pass or a pack of them. Where do the LMP cars have a big advantage over you (straight, under braking, mid corner).
  • Do not block: GT drivers do not have to move aside for an approaching LMP car, but they are not allowed to "block" or interfere with an LMP car trying to pass.

Remember every driver has their own style and approach to the course. You should take advantage of practices and support races to get to know your competitors and their driving styles and their skill level regardless of which class they are racing. Some drivers have more car control than others, some are more comfortable maintaining close proximity to other cars and some may back off with other cars around.

This event is for fun and drivers of all skill levels are welcome. If you have a problem with that then this probably isn't the event for you. Unintentional mistakes are going to happen, but this is a very long race and you have plenty of time to recover (light damage). However, at the same time, all drivers are expected to drive at a pace in which they can consistently control their car and not jeopardize other drivers. Do not drive faster than your ability to control the car. If during practices and races you are not able to consistently control your car you may be removed from the race and/or demoted to a lower race class at the stewards discretion.

Pit Road Entry and Exit Rules:
new.gif

PitExit-RoadCourse-Daytona-Shrunk_zpsfebc4b8d.jpg

  • Safe Pit Entry: Drivers must keep all four tires within the white lines on pit road entry and must avoid contact with walls. There is no specific speed limit on entry, but the driver may need to slow significantly in order to stay within the boundaries and avoid wall contact. If the boundaries are crossed or wall contact is made the driver can avoid penalty by lifting off the throttle completely for 2 seconds after the car is released from the pits to "self-penalize" otherwise a 10 second penalty will be incurred after the race.
    • At Daytona the system imposes an automatic pit penalty if a driver enters the pit too fast. Your responsible for understanding this limit or risk being held in the pits or if you enter way too fast having the AI drive right past your pit and getting a drive through penalty. Also, if you are going to pit be sure to drop down off the banked section early when approaching your pit, dive bombing from the banked section at the last second is not safe and could incur a 10 second penalty at the stewards discretion.
  • Safe Pit Exit: Drivers must keep all four tires within the white lines on pit road exit and cannot cross over to the racing line until after the white line has ended. As always, when exiting pit road the driver is responsible for a safe entry onto the racing line and must "yield" to oncoming traffic. Any incident resulting from an unsafe exit will result in a drive through penalty (30 secs) for the driver exiting the pits.
    • At Daytona drivers must use the small exit road when exiting the pits and may not exit directly into turn 1 or incur a 30 second penalty plus additional infractions if an incident results. See picture above.

Race End
checkered_flag_waving.gif
  • At 2.4 hours (2:24:00.000 on the race clock) the "white" flag will be waved.
  • The first time the overall race leader (from the LMP class) passes the finish line after 2.4 hours the checkered flag is waved and the leader's race is over. I.e. the first lap completed after 2.4 hours completes the leaders race. After passing the start/finish line the leader should immediately slow to 50 MPH and announce the checkered flag (press start and type "Checkered Flag"). No car should pass him at any time going forward. Any close finishes at the line will be reviewed with replay for the official results. Note: if in doubt, finish your lap and the results will be reviewed.
  • After the checkered flag is announced all drivers should complete their current lap and their race is finished when they next pass the finish line. They should line up behind the train of cars that have already finished moving at 50 MPH. When the last car passes the start/finish line we will announce race end, record the results and then allow everyone to exit track and save the replay.
  • If you are in the pits beyond the start/finish line when the leader takes the checkered flag you can complete your lap *only* if you can exit pit road before the leader passes the pit exit. You cannot past the leader on the parade lap.

--------------

Important notes for the Support races. (note: the two formation laps and GT getting a head start will NOT apply to the Enduro on Sunday)

Details:
  1. The races will be set to 36 laps. (35+1 for LMP, 34+2 for GT)
  2. The formation lap speed limit is 75 mph / 120 kph and a staggered two wide formation will be used.
  3. There will be 2 formation laps for GT drivers and 1 formation lap for LMP drivers.
  4. The target start for the LMP class is when the GT cars exit the infield.
  5. LMP cars are required to pit pause for 3 minutes.
  6. GT cars are required to pit pause for 0 minutes -- none.

Important Notes:
  • The lounge will be open about 1 hour before the race begins -- watch thread for announcement.
  • Be on time (at least 5 minutes early, but preferably 15).
  • Regulation checks will begin promptly at race start time.
  • No tire warming procedures allowed during formation laps.

Regulation Checks:

All drivers should be in the lounge at least 5 minutes before the race start time. We will begin reviewing these rules at that time. Once the steward begins to speak or type out the instructions please refrain from using the text or voice chat unless you have an important question.

At the race start time we will begin regulation checks. You will be called by name to enter the lounge with the GT drivers entering first in starting order and then LMP cars after regs are updated. Do not enter the course until your name is called and do not exit to the lobby once you are entered.

Stay in the pits until the system places you on the starting grid and then we'll begin the formation lap procedures above.

Formation Laps:

The GT cars will leave the grid in order of qualifying and run a fast, but safe single file lap to lap the LMP cars. The goal of this lap is just to get around fairly quickly and reform for formation Lap 2. At the same time the LMP class will allow the GT class to clear the grid and then leave the grid and park single file on the inside apron of the track just after the grid location..

The slower class will finish lap 1, pass the parked LMP cars and start lap 2 of their formation lap. The slower class should proceed on formation lap 2 at 75 mph/125 kph. The faster class will wait until the slower class are all clear of turn 2 and then begin to form up in qualifying order and begin their own formation lap at 75 mph/125 kph. The faster class should maintain about a 1 sector gap to the slower class for most of the formation lap. The pole car each class is responsible for setting a steady pace while allowing the group to keep together.

The slower class will begin the race at the start/finish line after their 2nd formation lap. The target start line is the official timing line and the lead car should make sure after the final turn that all cars have formed behind and closed the gap before the group approaches the start. At that point it's up to the lead car to accelerate to start the race and all other cars can speed up when the car in front of you does so.

The faster class cars will follow the same procedure and starting point, but the goal will be to time their start at the start finish line so that the lead car from the slower class is exiting the infield when the faster class accelerates to race pace. That should give the GT cars a half lap head start.

The final formation laps should be taken in staggered formation. The lead car will take the left side of the track. The second car should take to the right side of the track and alternate all the way back. This helps keep a tighter pack while maintaining better visibility versus single file. Cars should not "overlap" with the car in front of them. No passing before the start/finish line.

Finish:

Between the extra formation lap and pit pause difference the two classes should finish the race at approximately the same time. I'm not sure who will actually finish first, but all cars should have a fair chance to complete the race before the timer expires.

[*]LMP: January 10-21
[*]GT: January 10-24

Presumably these are incorrect/pasted from a previous event? Just thought I'd bring it up for whom it may concern. This sounds like fun, will work on a qualifier :D

That looks to be the case, but he does list qualifying deadlines of the 17th for LMP and 21st for GT.

Those dates have been corrected.
The quali times are / were also correctly posted in 2 other places in the OP. They all match now ;)

Yes sorry, I get a bit pedantic at times, ;)

Nope, sorry you all missed the deadline... I win by forfeit. :dunce:

I'm hungry for more endurance awesomeness! Thanks for posting the link in the Special Event XI tread, Tim. It really helped my awareness for the new event. I even missed out on the Monza enduro because I didn't check the forum in a long time.

This one looks to be a great race, with the Bentley being one of my favourite LMP cars.

Signed up for LMP primary, I am going to give a few days of practice before I commit 100% to that!

Anyone interested in a semi-organized practice session this Sunday? The Super Bowl is in the afternoon (Pacific Time) so I was thinking about starting early at 18:00 GMT, but I'm flexible so jot down what time would work for you and your chances of making it.

The practice session format would be a combination of free run and short 20 minute races very similar to our weekly practice sessions on Tuesday. So drivers can come and go as necessary during the session. Drivers are also free to switch cars at any time, no need to specify which car you'll use.

Hmmmm.... the SuperBowl loses it's appeal when a certain east coast team isn't there huh?
The race will totally cut into the 37 hour pre-game show :D

[*]Corvette C5-R '00: Obtained by redeeming a level 22 ticket (for which there are only 6 cars so odds are good). If you need a level 22 ticket you can request one on this thread and then you can "cycle" the ticket until you get the desired car.

Now, I did have a level 22 ticket, and can win another if need be, but how does one "cycle" the ticket? as soon as you redeem it, the game is saving. Am I missing a trick here? I have very limited experience with LMP cars, as I am a bit of a road-car purist and would not feel comfortable racing for that long in one, so have therefore signed up for just the GT class ;)

Edit: If I can indeed obtain myself the corvette, then I will for sure join in for your practice Tim.

Good idea Tim 👍
Should be there on sunday.

Redeem the ticket. If Corvette - Success!
If not, restart game before hitting ok, because that's when the game saves. Rinse and repeat. Probability of getting Corvette is 1 in 6.

That will only work with "redeem all tickets", square button i believe. Alternatively you can backup your save to a usb or alternate profile, and then copy it back over your save if you recieve the wrong car.

What JTV said. If you're not already in the habit of backing your save game up to a USB stick, I would suggest getting in that habit ASAP. It not only helps with the "ticket cycle" process, but can also help you try out unremovable parts on cars (ie, Engine Stages) without permanent alteration, as well as being there when you need it when your save gets corrupted or your PS3 dies.

I'll send you another LVL 22 ticket from the 3D3 account so you have a couple to work with. If you have two tickets (or more) every cycle then you have a greater the chance of getting what you want each round.

Send a FR to my main account (GTP_WRP001) and I'll send you one from there also! :dopey:

Not opting for the LMP this time?

This one is *much* easier than the Fuji LMP... I think the R89C @ Fuji one was the most difficult to drive we've run to date (not including the R10 at Grand Valley for "Tim's gonna kill me" which was even more of a handful, but at least wasn't an enduro). Or maybe it was just the technicality of Fuji that made it so challenging. Daytona is flat and the Speed 8 handles really nicely too. Still way more throttle control required though as compared to the GT car though.

If I find more time ill have a go at the bentley :)

If im not wrong, the game actually saves AS you redeem the ticket, not after your click accept. I know that trick works when experimenting with paints, but I thought they changed the ticket system so you cant do that exact thing?

Well, it really doesn't matter if you use the method recommend by JTV. I'd rather not guess when it's saving either. But if you have a backup on a usb drive then you know you can just exit, revert and try again.

Technically GT5's automatic backup also works and you don't need a usb drive. You just have to quit, delete your save file (making sure the backup is there which was created when you started GT5 before you redeemed the ticket) and then restart GT5 and it will ask you if you want to use your backup as the main save wasn't located. But still, I get nervous deleting the save so I prefer to just restore from a backed up version.
