I hear ya, pun intended :P

It's definitely the most important audible factor in creating realism. Project Cars is less but in my opinion it's not enough. Assetto Corsa lets you adjust it for yourself and that's the best option. The audio menu in AC is something I want for all games.

Not an active driver but used to be, so chalk up 71 opinions ;)

DP you talk about understeer being a factor in race craft if the league chooses to use a harder compound. While this is true, you as a driver should should be able to dial yourself back and not go over the limits of the tire you're given. I've been in this very scenario that you are describing, where one weekend I was driving a tire that was much softer and gripped the road better than anything I've driven. I was able to attack the corners much harder, brake later, carry more speed through the corners yadda yadda. But this past weekend I went back to the old tire, which doesn't stick as well. I had to dial back and drive the limits of the tire. I couldn't do the things that I was able to do with the better compound, but I never hit anyone, and my racecraft was as good as ever. Sure I was a little slower in laptimes but the fun factor was still there and I came home with a clean race car. I guess what I'm trying to say is that you can't blame a tire change for your lack of driver ability/awareness. Can't use understeer due to a crap tire as an excuse, there is no excuse for hitting someone.

Just my two cents, hopefully those in charge consider it!

AMEN Brother! This is exactly what I thought while reading the discussion. I'd be a proponent of the "less grip" model. My opinion is that it teaches patience and a better understanding of weight distribution. You need to really control your inputs to get the most grip out of a slippery set of tires.

I would like to open a "debate" on tire choices.

SNAIL has changed the tire selection rules a few times in the past and I want to put the subject on the thread for discussion again to see how people feel about it. With around 70 active drivers we might get 70 opinions (two from @DesertPenguin09 and none from @TBongX because he will only realize something happened long after the rules have changed  - allow me some demonstration of my sense of humor....)

So, let's have an open and respectful discussion on the subject.

I argue for stock tires.

Pros
  • No formulas, no additional rules - whatever you buy it with we race with
  • Some low PP race cars will provide some very competitive racing around short tracks (e.g VW Lupo Cup Racer around Tsukuba will be a hack of fun on RH's vs. CS's or CM's and will probably be more representative of those kind of real world side mirror rubbing races....)
  • Complaints about high PP street cars on racing tires will go away
Cons
  • D4 skills will improve so much that we may only have 3 divisions:cheers:

Speaking of conversations, I'm curious what the opinions and response would be to banning ABS. Now hear me out, last week one of the faster guys recommended it for a certain combo. In that combo I actually seemed to do better with no ABS, and in other combos my results have generally been about the same with or without but it does take a bit more diligence *. The brakes are more sensitive, but I am also having to press them less and often the sound of which wheel is locking is a bit helpful.
Two downsides off the bat: This is the first time I've turned off ABS since I first got GT5, where with my old wheel it was undriveable.
Second downside is if it would be a big handicap for controller racers.

* My pole time for our division with the Red Devil at HSR was no ABS

Since SNAIL always allowed it I always used to run it on 1. Turning it off was very troubling for me in the controller so I never bothered trying to figure it out. Now I've done a lot of racing on the Dark Side with ABS off and I've gotten used to it. Actually, truth be told, my breaking skill set is probably one of my strongest in that game when comparing my overall ability to other drivers of similar talent.

But that's a different game.

In SNAIL you don't HAVE to use ABS. If you are faster without it - go for it.

If you have a wheel with a clutch pedal and shifter you can also stop using the flappy paddles on the steering wheel and do true manual shifting on the 99% of the cars where you can do it. (Not sure if you have to use the plappies if you have more than 6 gears?)

Within the rules of SNAIL you can still challenge yourself to new heights if you want to.

Wait... People still use paddles?!. Next thing you're going to tell me is that people still don't use cockpit view!

As a ds3 user, the only time I experimented with abs 0 was when we ran the vipers at trial mountain. I only tested it for a few laps, and didn't want to get too comfortable practicing with a different setting I wouldn't be using during Sunday racing. But I found it really freed the car up, and I was able to take turns faster than normal with these new lines the car now offered. I can see the benefits of running abs 0, but as someone who smashes down on the joystick to brake, I wouldn't feel comfortable using it in an actual race.

Sidenote: Cat & Mouse tonight! https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/threads/snail-cat-mouse.348762/

Paddles and Bumper view! Still part of the no brake bias change though! :gtpflag:
If I'm using a car that would have paddles in the non-virtual world, then you might as well call me Dale. Because I rock the (bleep) out of those drums!

I actually like tire upgrades, but dislike when we purchase a car and then we have to downgrade from the tires the car came with. Grrrrr. I wish we could use racing softs for the high power super cars. Better tires on the low PP race cars would be nice as well. Doing so will offer more speed and better traction. That's how I feel about this. Yes, you're welcome. LoL

Guys...

We made it to race camp!!

From left to right (Gonzalo, Lorenzo @Enzo_Goiko, Jhonny, Enrique, Gabriel @Ness, Oscar @pakicote)

This time was super competitive, the organizers told us that all the group was really tight, a lot of people stepped up their physical fitness and driving abilities, we did the same and this time we manage to come out on the top 6.

So thanks very much guys for the good vibes and good wishes you sent us, it really helped. Race camp starts October 18.

My original request to join SNAIL.

Looking back over the past couple years I just want to give a great big Thank You to the SNAIL organization, and all of it's racers/participants.

Funny how much an online community can become a part of your life and personality. I truly miss the Sunday night format of GT6 since going to the "Dark Side." So much that I continuously contemplate coming back.

SNAIL taught me the importance of racing clean above all else. When virtual racing against AI it's so easy to take short cuts, ram other cars out of your way, and tune your car into an easy win. That's exactly how I started racing three years ago.

Then I found this amazing community with it's even more amazing... organizational structure... if you will. I'm proud to have started out in what was then D8, and even finished toward the back of the pack the first few Sundays. The comradery between race mates, the respect on track, and the unmatched enjoyment of competing against several other "real" individuals hooked me.

I still follow this thread faithfully. I've gotten to know many of you better than you probably think - I kinda' have one of those remember everything minds (except braking points :irked:). But my point is, I think of you SNAIL folk as friends. I wish the best for all of you, I feel sorrow when you go through struggles, and I always look forward to getting to spend time with you, even it it's just through forum chat or a headset.

Some day I may even get to race as often as I'd like to... then I'd really be a nuisance.

Thank you SNAIL. I had no idea what a great organization this was when I stumbled upon it. I'm so glad that I found it.

For those PC Gamers who are interested in "The Crew" (heard it's pretty bad lol) it's free on the Uplay app, it's 21.32GB and I have nothing to do so... :)

They will be releasing free games in October, November and December too! :D
