1080p versus 720p

Yea 1080p rocks, many budget 32" screens are actually 1080i which is slightly better than 720p. TV's are so cheap now you'd be best just going all out for 1080p probably.

Edit:
Faria0808 GT5 plays 60fps whatever, I dont think that makes a difference

And it honestly depends on the size of the TV and how far you will be sitting from it. If it's a 32" TV and you're sitting 6-8ft from it, you likely won't notice a resolution difference at all between 720p, 1080i, and 1080p. If you're getting something closer to the 50" range, though, 1080p will definitely look crisper.

I sit 7ft from my 52" TV and have the game running on 1080i (older receiver with older HDMI passthrough only allowing for interlaced... prefer the ease of operation over a slightly better picture) and it looks beautiful. I haven't noticed any slowdown, whatsoever.

progressive is ALWAYS better than interlaced, trust me I should know.

I always had a 720P native screen for years (through GT5P) and have finally switched to a 1080P LED screen, and there is a remarkable difference. On my old set I tested a lot to find out if 1080i was any good compared to 720P, and even in the car selection screen where the car spins around you can clearly see a difference in smoothness and more so on the back-straight of Suzuka.

So, if you have a choice go for either 720P or 1080P, but really for a game like this avoid interlaced.

Is interlaced terrible? Far from it. But is it smoother than progressive? Absolutely not.

Actually if you look at the Digital Foundry article there was generally only a 2-4 frame drop from 720P to 1080P.

Thanks guys for all your input on this one, I really appreciate that! The new TV is a Sony 37ex500 ( 37 inch and 100 hz ). I'll start at 1080p and see wat happens :)

Biggest thing you guys are missing is the beauty of Plasma. LCD/LED just aren't as crisp and spot-on with the colors and contrast. 1080p Plasma has me :drool:ing every time I play.

+1... I wasn't going to start that discussion here tho. lol.

All Menus are Full 1080p and it makes a bit of difference if you play more than a few feet from the Tv. I have a 42' but i don't sit right at it like Kaz does :). In game it does look sharper a little. But adjust your TV sharpness if it looks a little blurry like mine did.

But then a lot of plasma screens suffer from being as reflective as a mirror which looks horrible :guilty:

Yeah, sorry. I should probably back off. Anything 1080p will look better than 720p, provided the tube is >37" and you're no more than 6-8 feet from the screen.

A decent plasma will have half decent anti glare coating and filters... My Panasonic TC-P50G20 is great even in a bright lit room. A lot of LCD's are going to Glass screens as well to help perceived black levels.

You'd really have to murder the TV to get burn-in. There's some image retention that goes away after a few seconds, but it's no problem at all, and nigh unnoticeable except on a pure black screen.

Not sure what you guys mean by "abuse" "murder". I researched years ago on Plasma for gaming and pretty much all signs lead to not going with Plasma for serious gaming or PC monitor use. The chance of it happening was enough to get me to only buy LCD. This was like in 2005 when i did the research when i got my first HDTV, 26" :)

People love to spread myths and rumors.

Plasmas are the best choice for gaming... low input lag, awesome refresh rates, awesome black levels and color accuracy.

+1, way smoother, no refresh rate issues, clipping etc. New LED/LCDs are better but old ones sucked compared to plasma.

Mine is 4 years old Ive played a ton of games, no burn in at all!

I've been using a Panasonic PX80 plasma for around 2 years now...play roughly on average 3-4 hours a day and at weekends some gaming sessions I log up too 6-8 hours straight. I have never had any problems with screen burn 👍

I have seen burn-in on my own eyes on the flag ship of Panasonic 3D plasma TV set, Panasonic VIERA TX-P50VT20E. Until we have an option to turn the HUD off, I wouldn't recommend to select plasma over LCD for playing GT5. Another negative feature of plasma technology is phosphor trailing which led me to surrend to plasma completely. This issue was also seen on TX-P50VT20E, although not to often as on cheaper TVs.

I have had a Samsung 63" Plasma for 2 years now, had stock tickers on the bottom of the screen, played games for hours with HUDs and never had perminant burn in. sure after I turn it off it may be there for a few minutes but it goes away. In the last 5 years they have really gotten rid of that issue unless you buy a cheap plasma (which they don't make anymore, you really can't find generic plasmas like you can LCDs). LED TVs are getting better but still not as good as plasmas, I just hope they have a better option before Plasmas vanish from the market (which is what is happening). I have 3 plasmas and won't go LCD right now unless its a computer monitor.

Where? at a store display? When the brightness and contrast are jacked to max and display static images all day?

You def didn't see it in a home environment.
