OK, so pops pulled it out and went through with the deal.
Pics incoming when I go to drive it.
Bottom line:
He wanted the Luxury more than the Sport.

Wouldn't be my choice, but it's a lovely car and is very luxurious.

the buyer doesn't have faith in Jaguar's reliability

MB SL 550
!

Jaguar, top of JDPower both sides of the Atlantic, has questionable reliability but Mercedes-Benz - Mercedes-Benz - is fine?

You can all keep your tasteless, bulky modern stuff:

Plus a healthy dollop of change.

What can I say... :indiff:
He's wanted an SL ever since I was a kid and I had no real say in it.

I'm guessing you're saying MB isn't as reliable as Jaguar. Saddens me to hear that but even with JDPower saying MB is bad I'd have a hard time convincing him Jag is better (he's owned a few Jags and had some horrible experiences).

All in all I guess he was smart to get the extended warranty. 👍

Homeforthesummer,
Saw that exact car being picked up after some work while I was at the dealer. Think I made the owner's day when I told him I liked how he put the modern radio in the glove box so it could be hidden away. We chatted about the old whiney types that can't stand to see a new radio in a car like that and how it was cool of me to say what I did about the radio. :sly: Was actually kind of fun to connect with an old timer driving a classic while I was waiting on my dad to buy the newest version of the same car.

All that said, I'd have bought a Porsche with the money he spent but the car is just too much sport for my dad. He's always wanted the SL and never been a car guy like me. :indiff:

Wow I never knew they existed! that is a Nissan Sliva convertible right?
240sx the California edition
For the 1994 model year, the only available 240SX was a Special Edition convertible equipped with an automatic transmission. The US 240sx convertible differed from the Japanese market version, in that the Japanese market model had a power top cover boot, whereas the US market model had manually installed boot cover once the top is down.
Oddly, I wouldn't mind picking my 240sx.

Jaguar and Mercedes experienced their switch in fortunes at about the same time - though truth be told, Jaguar had been on the up since they ditched the XJS. Back when the 00s clicked round there was almost no more unreliable car money could buy than a Mercedes-Benz and Jaguar were a top three fixture with the Japanese manufacturer du jour and Lexus. Right now it's Jag and Lexus occupying the top two spots - though, to be wholly fair, Mercedes have been gradually canning the crap models (the M remains and is still a disaster) and getting the stupid people out of its dealerships to get back towards the favourable end.

He probably remembers Jag as they were - Lucas electronics (you had to keep the smoke in) and the XJS. And Mercedes as they were, for that matter, as the prestige brand to end all prestige brands. But Jaguar have been climbing the tree since the XK and the current range is deservedly sitting atop it - while Mercedes are still merely on their way back from a catastrophic spell. Still, that's old guys for you :D
