so according to you a proffesional drag car is a super car?

no wonder you think a vette is a super car.

Like I said, a supercar doesn't have to be a well-rounded vehicle. It just has to have a purpose that defeats a road practicality. I'm not going to say this over and over. The HKS, the Z06, the Enzo... They're not meant for daily driving, thus rendering them utterly useless on the streets, especially through winter.

or it could be that when he is usually driving a car very fast on a track, its normally a race car. which is it? we dont know. point is, its irrelevant.

It couldn't be more relevant. Different cars have unique handling characteristics. If you're totally unfamiliar with how a car acts and runs, you're not going to do as well as someone who has driven the car for several months on end and knows its quirks like the back of his/her hand, even if you're Jan Magnussen.

Which was a point I've made earlier. Wouldn't a test driver have more experience with a certain model or company's cars than a professional racer car driver would?

while you're both corect, you're also insulting jan. a good proffesional driver can get in a car and drive it fast right off the bat. maybe not 10/ 10s, but faster than you or i could. don't insult the man.

im not gonig to say he had just as much ring time or time in the Z06 as hte other driver in the other car, but dont insult me by saying since he "didnt know the car" he didnt drive it as fast.

i know a world famous musician (bass player) he can pick up any instrument and play it. any, not just the bass, not just stringed instruments.

same applies for race car drivers. otherwise colin mcrae wouldnt be driving in the paris dakar rally in a truck, sebastian loeb in an LMP2 at the 24 hours of lemans and robbie whateverhis name also in the paris dakar and baja 500

No. And I'm not even going to dignify your asinine remarks with any type of answer anymore.

And, I know nothing about your Eagle Talon, but I drive a Camaro myself. I'd consider both sportscars, as they weren't meant to run an 8 minute N-ring time or run the 1/4 mile under 8 seconds. They're simple beefed-up teenager econo-cars.
But, my Talon is a "Supercar" by your definition......
FAOLIU05
A supercar is one which simply excells in track performance over defined road practicality, regardless of brand, price, and looks
My Talon runs the 1/4 in just barely more than 11 seconds, so its very fast. It gets about 9-10mpg in normal driving, so its very impractical. And, its an Eagle. Need I say more about brand???

I agree, those things are very important for a "Supercar" to have. But, I think a "Supercar" should also have some exotic-ness as well. And, be very rare, unlike anything else from the brand, if they even have other cars. Like I said, a 911 Turbo isn't a "Supercar" because of the fact that you see 911s everywhere. That ruins the exclusivity. And, the Turbo is just a fast 911, so there is nothing exotic about it.

But, the C-GT is "Supercar" all the way. Its not based on another model. It has very specialized construction with all the CF in its chassis. And it has a V10, which no other Porsche has. You can't mistake a C-GT for a "normal" Porsche. But, the average Joe could easily mistake a z06 for a "normal" Vette. That makes it not very "Super" to me.

thats coz i've destroyed your pathetic definition of supercar and shown the corvette to be nothing special as you would want us to believe.

humility can be painful, i know.

I don't know enough about Talons to give you any kind of answer as to whether or not it is. But 11 seconds is very quick. Since I guess you're the one who built it up and your the one driving it, its about your personal preferrence. But 11 secondsi s very impractical for the streets.

How the heck is that an insult to him? It's just the way things are; when you step into a car for the first time, you won't drive it as well as you will when you step into it for the 50th time. Certainly, it is a testament to his driving skills that he was able to turn in such a blistering lap time with what practice he had with it. There's nothing wrong with that. But it's not at all impossible that he could've done even better if he'd had more time with the Z06. Indeed, it's the most likely explanation, unless Chevrolet lied about some of the performance numbers.

its an insult because he is a proffesional. a professional can get in a car and drive fast right away. maybe not 10/ 10s but faster than you or i could (i could swear i explained this already.0

if i get in an unfamiliar car and am given free reign on a track, besides killing myself im likely to drive at more like 4 or 5/ 10s . jan would be closer to 9/ 10s. he is a pro.

its not brain surgery; he is a professional driver. repeat that. his 4/ 10s is better than my 10/ 10s in any car on any day. he could probably beat me in an elise round the ring with me in a vette.

you seem to underestimate the veriety of cars that pros have to drive before they reach the top level of cars. hes driven fast cars before, a whole host of them. not always race cars, not always very fast cars. but he can immediately push the limits whereas i would need to go to a high performance driving school to establish where those limits are.

dont insult him. what youre in effect saying is he didnt do his best. he did his best, based on his familiarity with the car. but he still only managed to beat the GT3 by .01 of a second. big deal.

like i sid, that speaks to the capabilities of the GT3 more than the vette

Hey, all I'm saying is, according to your "Supercar" definition, my car easily fits the bill. Glad it could make the list. HA :)

Jan had only an hour to work with.

hes been at the ring before so all it was was familiarity with the machine. but like ive been sayin he is more comfortable getting in any car and driving fast right off the bat than you or i would.

the 2006 corvette zo6 can be a daily driver. I dont know if the same can be said for the porchev 911 GT3. look at all the equipment that the vette has in it that the 911 doesnt.

Then why was he speaking as though he was uncomfortable with the Corvette? Yes, the man is supremely skilled. But surely you don't believe that with, say, an entire day of practice with the Corvette, it's completely impossible that he could've turned in an even faster lap? Just because the man is a professional driver doesn't mean he can't benefit from getting used to the way a car handles. He's not an android.

Hmmm, both have steering wheels, a driver seat, engine, and 4 wheels. Seems they both could be driven anyday you choose.

Maybe because the car is scarry and ill-handling at speed??? Maybe it wants to tailslide at 120mph??? Maybe the cars brakes fade after 4 turns?? Truth is, we'll never know what he meant. But, I'm with Neanderthal on this one. If he can get in the car, drive it at speed, and come away saying it was uncomfortable, that doesn't bode well for us regular folk behind the wheel.

Hilg

That is one way of interpreting it, yes. However, what with how he compared it to his racer and all, it's also quite likely he simply wasn't used to its handling quirks. Again, the fact that the time he turned in was still damn fast is a testament to how good he is. But is it REALLY so irrational to believe that more than an hour's practice would have had a positive impact on his run?

Speaking of actual driver comfort, I don't believe the Corvette has ever been all that particularly comfortable, at least not when compared to many of the European exotics.

As for the "daily driver" thing...yeah, you can drive it any day you choose, but there's not much you can actually do with it (or perhaps, SHOULD do with it) besides take it to the track. Heck, at least the Viper has a trunk.

Yeah well, remember, that definition is just my opinion. I but then again, my supercar list isn't exclusive.

Any car can be a daily driver. The Z06 just isn't very practicaly. Just like the RS.

So does a 911. Right up front, and there is plenty of room behind the front seats.

you do realise that racecars have a more downforce than road cars right? isnt it possible thats what he was using as a frame of reference since he siad it had nearly as much power.

noone is saying that more time wouldnt have made a more positive effect on his run. we are saying give him credit, hes a pro. he's not going to get an extra minute from getting to know the car. yeah, he could finesse that time a little more. happy?

still, for a 7 liter car that has better front rear weight ratio, weighs a scant 134lbs more than the GT3, has wider track and longer wheelbase, it shoulda done better. thats what it boils down to.

y'all are here crowing over the fact that it beat the GT3 by 0.01 of a second when you should be saying "dayum, there might be more to that GT3 than we thought."

An extra minute IS too much to ask, and is not what I (or, more than likely, anyone else thinking this) had in mind. I was thinking on the order of shaving 2, maybe 3 seconds off his time at the most. In terms of racing, that's both a perfectly reasonable and a significant enough improvement to expect.

+1

Both great cars. But, it just goes to show how much Porsche knows when it comes to making a car go fast.

--- EDIT--- I just noticed that 10 of the cars on that list above are Porsches, or Porsche based. Coincidence??? Hmmmmm

and i wonder what kind of mileage the gt3 gets? and i wonder how my back would feel after driving it for 2 weeks straight. Does the GT3 have air conditioning or a radio?

I know a few people who drive the corvette almost daily.

I never said anything about the 911's practicality, just the Corvette's. I just mentioned the Viper because I'm an unrepentant Viper fanboy. The thing could run a 9 at the 'Ring and I'd still love it. :sly:

ok, i give you three seconds. boo frikkin hoo.

nearly twice the displacement 3.6 vs 7.0 liters. (vette 49%advantage)
125 hp difference (vette 23% advantage)
(HUGE TORQUE ADVANTAGE) 196lb/ ft (vette 40% adv) that difference is almost 90lb/ ft off the porsches maximum torque
134lb weight difference (porsche 9%adv)
wider track (vette)
longer wheelbase (vette)
probably bigger brakes too, but dont quote me.
newer (more techonolgy and so on) (vette)

the porsche has one category out of 6 (im skipping a couple) and you're beating your chests about 3 seconds? :irked:  :odd: :odd: :odd:

like i said, you should be  to the porsche instead of braggin about the vette. 3 seconds in 7:42 minutes is still way way within 1 %.

bully for the vette. "gor-dayum" for the GT3.

why dont you post the gear ratios and we can compare? we all know about the vettes gas saving super long sixth ratio with a ratio of 0.50. we aren't idiots you know.

and you know what, if they took out that AC and radio, i bet it wouldnt make a huge difference in the time. and the weights would be about even. :dunce:

ps i think the GT3 has form fitted racing seats. which do you think are better for you, a seat designed for your back or one desigend for the hoi polloi?

you fanboys sometimes make me laugh. the sad thing is none of you have brought up the most salient fact of all.
