Finally some medals in the pool.

All the hype about the 14 year old diver seems to have failed. A bit of a reality check.

I also just watched the 4x100m relay and well a fantastic finish.

An interesting note on the crowds at the Olympics. The 'Sell out' crowds just aren't turning up and they are busing in cheerleaders to fill spots.

The NBC Olympics website has full coverage of everything. Go to "VIDEO" on the top bar, select "NBC Encore," and then view "Opening Ceremony Sights and Sounds." That's 52 minutes of the show, as seen on TV. I just re-watched it, my God, it was amazing.

Thank you a whole hell of a lot YSSMAN. I've now got the ability to show my friends and f family who had also missed out.

+ invis rep. 👍

HOLY CRAP!

We just SMASHED the 4X400 swim record for men... Absolutely amazing! What the hell happened to the Aussies as a swimming threat?

I swear the swimming organisers did something to the pool - made it 5m too short or something.

The US swim team is amazing, and Phelps... well, he's superhuman.

I saw that 4x400, Americans totally destroyed everyone else. Phelps is amazing to watch.

The one thing that disappoints me about the Olympics for me is that we Canucks don't usually fair out too well, seeing as we are one of the most developed countries and we can barely win any medals at all. Last time I checked, good old Canada is tied for last place with 0!

Wow, anyone watch USA Vs Nigeria in the football? quite a close finish indeed.

Ian Thorpe retired.

Anyway, it seems that most of the American team has the runs, according to my cousin Mike. At least the ones on the island. Lochte had it too, which is why he was a little laggy. I talked to my cousin and he's being moved to the mainland facility and will be roommates with Reese Hoffa-- USA shot put champion. That should be cool.

Your dive teams usually do well as I recall, but sure enough, these aren't the winter Olympics are they? Better luck in Vancouver in two years I'm certain...

I'm watching the US v Korea in baseball right now and this is a close game.

Top of the 9th inning and the US just took a 1 run lead.

Ya our dive teams have been good recently but as a whole, Team Canada is pretty weak especially at the summer Olympics. I know we are Canada and everything and live in colder climate and we do alot better in winter Olympics, but we should still be able to do better in the summer games. Nobody else says "O well these are the summer olympics, we really only train for the winter games."

Who saw what happened to that guy's arm in the weightlifting?

All I can say is ouch, I don't want to see pictures of that again :ouch:

China 1-2 in the pool 200m Butterfly.

Yes Sharky. I did. Nasty. His arm just...ugh buckled and his elbow was just out. :yuck: nasty stuff

The US Men's basketball is putting a beatdown on Greece to get their revenge for the World Games loss.

I just wish they had a different coach. I despise Coach K, from Duke.

I dislike Olympic basketball, professional players shouldn't be in it and sort of ruins the whole thing for me.

I've been impressed with Phelp's performance so far, but then again how can one not be impressed with the sheer athleticism he demonstrates every time he gets in the pool. In my opinion he is right up there with Tiger Woods as one of the great athletes ever.

Oh and I have this strange fascination with the beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh, but then again I have a thing for tall blondes.

If all NBA players were on the American team I would agree, but as many NBA players are from other countries and play for their native homeland I think it is fine.

Although I regret that I will never see the days like when Adolph Rupp took Kentucky to win the SEC, NCAA, and Olympics all in the same year.

Oh and I have this strange fascination with the beach volleyball player Kerri Walsh,
There is nothing strange about that for a straight male.

Well, I suppose that means he can stop whining like a baby about the Olympics then.

Speaking of whining like a baby about the Olympics, I wish Channel 4 News (in the UK) would do likewise... they kicked off their main evening bulletin this evening with a cringe-worthy display of stupidity that really ticked me off. One of their main anchors attended a press conference today and repeatedly asked an IOC spokeswoman whether or not the IOC was embarrassed by China's failure to honour promises they have made on human rights etc. Don't get me wrong, I have no sympathy for the Chinese government and don't feel that they deserve any lee-way simply because they are hosting the Olympics... but why do UK reporters persist in hassling the IOC? What do they want them to do? Cancel the rest of the Games? And this, by the way, was their TOP story... no matter that US/Russian relations are crashing and burning in Georgia. It's far more important that the IOC (those bastards!) are not wearing their "Free Tibet" T-shirts... :irked: It's not so much that I think that the IOC shouldn't say something on the issue, just that it is hardly top story material. I wouldn't be surprised if they followed that 'scoop' by reporting that it is currently raining in Glasgow!

Who else would they use? And don't other teams have professional basketball players, not necessarily NBA, on their team?

College players would be a start, and yes other teams other then the US use NBA players as well which is why I dislike Olympic basketball as a whole and not just Team USA. Although Kobe is on Team USA so I honestly hope they lose every game.

The way he has been playing I wonder if he isn't trying to grant your wish.

Its kind of funny that the big NBA superstars, like Kobe and LeBron, aren't the ones making a good show.

But then in the Olympics you can't get away with non-stop shooting. Everyone else is actually playing defense, so the better looking players aren't the guys who shoot 100 shots a game and try to set record individual high scores.

I saw the US make a steal on Greece and the announcer goes, "That's right. You play defense in the Olympics."

I almost never watch NBA games so I don't even know who the guys on the team are that aren't headline grabbers. But watching them I can see that Coach K has done his job (ugh) and it almost, not quite, but almost looks like a college game (minus the strict goal tending rules).

Yeah I agree, I think professional swimmers shouldn't go to the olympics, we should get college people in there. Also why have professional runners in the olympics? It's not like it's supposed to a competition for the 'best'.

I've been watching mainly the coverage on SBS with some channel 7 coverage. It annoys me so much though that channel 7 will show the first heats of swimming events only because an Australian is in them whilst ignoring other sports which would be more interesting because they are in the gold medal stage - all they show on there is basically swimming! They'll also show lots of repeats of the races through the day which gets so annoying. Thank god Foxtel & Channel 9 will be getting the 2012 coverage.

Do you realize that 90% of Olympians are professionals? Whether you make money at doing what you do has nothing to do with the Olympics.

Look at Track & Field, for example. Walter Dix is still a student at FSU. He came in second in the 100m behind Tyson Gay (who is a pro), securing his spot on the Olympic team. He beat 5 other pros.

So, what is the big deal with professional players? You're making a big stink out of nothing. Just enjoy the games.

How is it a big stink? I made two little comment regarding it. I just don't think NBA player should be allowed in the Olympics, just as I don't think NHL, MLB (I don't know if there are any playing), or MLS players should be either.

Well, it's certainly a major statement, even if the statement itself is packaged in a little comment.

I don't think its so much as professionals shouldn't be allowed at the Olympics, it's more like would a professional want to compete unpaid, as all Olympic athletes generally are?

It's just a personal opinion, nothing more.

I personally have no issues with professionals in the Olympics just because it is supposed to be about the best athletes/team in the world. Just because the best athletes chose to make money off their talent it makes them no less Olympic worthy.

It's kind of like saying professional authors shouldn't get book awards or that Oscars should only go to independent filmmakers.

But I can understand Joey's thought on having athletes that care more about the achievement than anything else. Having non-professionals would make it seem more....pure?

But I care more about seeing the best of the best go head-to head and making it amateurs only would remove that.
