This is it guys, the thread we've all been waiting for... The FIAT 500 vs the Audi R8. As always, I want to thank everyone for the fun we've had over the past month or so, for keeping it fairly clean, and quite certainly the results "interesting." I love making threads like these, as the process of getting here is the best part of it all.

I'm voting for the 500 because

Well, I went for the 500 based more on the fact that I believe it deserves the title. Not since the origional MINI have we seen a small car do so much for the entire segement. For that matter, it couldn't have come at a better time. A great level of vision went into the car, seeing that there was a need for a "premium" (but still affordable!) sub-compact in Europe and possibly the rest of the world (fingers crossed). Its just a wonderful mix of style, substance, and what makes motoring great for those of us on a budget.

Nothing against the R8 really, I mean, its one of the few Audis I give a damn about... But in the segment, I still feel like there are better cars out there.

I don't exactly think you should vote for a car which you simply have a grudge against. Oh and that 500 took down my DB9.

I voted for the R8 because i'm pissy that the 500 beat my oh so precious DB9, oh wait, I'm not five.

But in all seriousness I'm not a big fan of the 500 so the R8 is what I voted for.

The 500, it's economical, it's fun, and it's affordable to many people. While the Audi R8 is a good car, the 500 is far more obtainable by most people and when it comes down to being the best in the world one has to remember it isn't about how fast the car can go. I don't see the 500 winning though because of the biased against FWD vehicles on these boards (which is something I'll never understand), but it made it to the final round, which is good enough for me. A win would just be a bonus.

Given the way opinions go on these boards I don't really think it had a chance of winning. I'm not saying those opinions are wrong and the people are not allowed to have them, it's just those opinions are what make me thing the 500 will receive the big L.

I voted for the R8 because I like the styling of it. If I could buy it I would.

If the 500 ever came to the US I'd consider it.

I voted 500.

For one it looks better IMO, and the fact that the R8 is an extremely over priced car, pretty slow for the money in competition to the Corvette, GTR, and 911.

It's been said before what would you rather have? A basic level R8 with 0 or next to 0 options or have a GTR and a medium-high level G35. Or you can have a C6 Z06 Vette (I would take that!) and... well another entry level lux sports sedan. Would you rather have 2 nice cars? Or one nice car? Personally I would rather have 2 for 2 different reasons!

With the 500, I could have 10 different reasons! I could invade the Audi factory with 500's! HELL YEAH!!! /braveheart baby!

It's interesting. The only thing that could make it more interesting is if it was on an RR platform, but we can't get everything we want, and I'm not fully against FF. The car looks nice and there's plenty to say about it. At this point I don't care if it struck down my beloved SL65 Black.

This one didn't get my vote. I don't know, it just doesn't really appeal to me. It looks boring and isn't necessarily the next greatest thing. I can't see how it beat the GTR really.

Yeah, it could be over priced but people are buying it. Besides if you had the money for R8, I doubt you would care much about that.

I'm sure if you were digging for change you could pair your R8 with a Fit, when gas money, etc. would be tight. The R8 also comes with a great interior, a comfortable ride, 4 wheel drive and it's mid-engined, which gives it a proper weight distribution. But on the other side your 2 for 2 argument also comes into play. You could mix an NSX with an AWD G35 or something similar.

I voted for the 500. There is something about a car that is very unique and stylish compared to every other bland econocar in the segment.

I don't see any reason why the R8 is better than any other car in it's class either.

What exactly is your point? The fact that (according to you) other cars look good means that people can't appreciate a good looking European car? Or, if they do, they should throw in a "...but, X car from not Europe looks just as good"?

Voted for the 500 as I promised. Like many has said, its a car which is pratical and fun to drive without having a supercar body or big engines!!! The R8 will never cut it for me. A Mid engine, 4WD sports car supercar that people says "its the best thing evah". Yeah, as if Lamborghini, Tommy Kaira or many other companies that have done that before...... (I could list down even more) At least the GT-R brought something unique to the game, and that was to build a sports car that could shoot down those Europeans at their own game..... 👍

And for the price of that R8, I could get away with buying both the GT-R and the 500 or even that tempting 911 GT2. Oh, and can I can still say this:
Porsche 911 > Audi R8

R8. Not a huge fan, but it's the lesser of 2 evils.

The 500 does nothing for me. I said it in the vs. DB9 thread, but it's a Sheep in Lamb's clothing just to appeal to the masses. It's a wrong-engined, wrong-wheel driven, cash-cow throwback.

Don't get me wrong, I've nothing against Front engine, and Front Drive. My second car was a Citroen AX GT and it was incredible fun. Light, fast, infinitely chuckable and very easy to drive even at 10/10ths.

The new Fiat 500, like the New Beetle before it, has sold it's entire soul to something more heinous than the "Marketing Division Of The Sirius Cybernetics Corporation" if you ask me, just in the name of selling cutesy concepts to people who think that it's cool to buy anything with a retro-look, but who've no idea about the real history of the product that they're buying into.

I agree with Muzaffar Musa all the way, the DB9 was great but come on that thing is old now and needs to be in the retiring home like all the rest of the comes and goes, it might still be in production but I bet it probably won't last for too long like how the Vanquish did

Oh and the reason why I really voted for the 500 is because it has the ton that says fun and has a body that even a cat would adore

👍 And who exactly cares about whether they are 'blinged' or not? The fact of the matter is, they can afford it, we can't. And I don't care because it isn't my car.

Oh and lets not start on the DB9, I just brought it up as an example and sarcasm.

I'm voting for the 500.

In today's market it's incredibly hard to create a desireable product that isn't the product of extensive marketing and celebrity hype, but simply a creation that is fundamentally attractive. The MINI was one of those (although limited production probably helped fire the desire.) as was the I-pod. The Playstation II. There's more than a few examples. Products whose desireablity crosses social, racial, economic barriers are products that speak to the times. Some companies "get it" and create accordingly. Others don't, and fail accordingly. Suzuki X90 anybody? Pontiac Aztek?

The R8 is also a desireable product. But its easy to create a desireable product if its too expensive for the common man. People were buying "supercars" when they were unreliable, uncomfortable, unergonomic. But because they were expensive more than a few of us had posters of them in our rooms. Thank you NSX for bringing common sense to the supercar game. I'm ranting a little, but the gist of it is; how desireable would the R8 be if it wasnt a luxury car brand and wasn't so expensive?
Don't get me wrong, a car that can beat the 911 is a heck of a car. But it's beaten by a car that is not only fun to look at, but fun to drive, and fun to be in.

I voted for the R8, because it beat the GTR which beat my Commodore.

No, but seriously, I'm not much of a fan of either, I'm rather disappointed that the R8 especially is here when there are so many far better and more deserving sports cars in the segment. The only extra reason I voted for the R8 was the engine sound, you have to admit it's a sound that appeals.
