Spy Shots: Chevy Cobalt nose fully exposed
112_0806_01z+2011_chevrolet_compact+front_three_quarter_view.jpg

GM made big promises when the Cavalier was finally supplanted by the Cobalt. It was to be a departure, a break from the not-so-fondly-regarded J-Body to an all-new vehicle capable of competing head-on with the Civic. Yeah. Then it debuted and reality was "not so much." It's worlds better than the Cav, but for a car that was supposed to be a clean break, it certainly looks like a continuation of the J, no matter how much pent up lust we harbor for the Cobalt SS in any form. Pardon us if we're going with Dubya quoting The Who, but fool us once.....won't get fooled again.

Leave it to spy photographers to at least assuage our fears about the styling of the Cobalt's replacement. The Malibu's grille and the Equinoxes lamps get scaled down and applied to a body that's wholly removed from the neo-Cavalier we've got now. This time around, Chevy seems far more serious about being a leader, and they're focusing on more than just dissecting Jetta suspension bushings. The Cobalt moniker might not make the transition to the Delta platform; Rick Wagoner avoided any mention of the name while comparing how much better than the incumbent the incoming model will be. Wagoner did go on to promise more of everything; from quality and equipment, to safety and fuel economy.

It's appears they took the Malibu's design file and just squeezed it together and called it a day.

I dont' know...it still looks...Cobaltish.

I think I'll need something better than this spy shot to make final judgement.

Ooohh nasty, I didn't mind the Cobalt, it was nice in a sort of inoffensive way, but that's both plain and ugly at once.

GM once again loses even more style points. They should seriously start hiring European or Aussie designers because GM couldn't design its way out of a cardboard box.

I don't think it looks bad.
In any case, I just care about what they've done to improve the overall appeal of the car.

It does not look bad, but it also does not look good. Maybe it is just the spy picture that makes me be on the fence with the styling. I am just indifferent to what is shown there.

Its not bad, but its not spectacular either... Remember this one is a global model, so its gotta look decent everywhere. I'm counting on top-notch interior materials and good driving dynamics, but, we'll see.

Is it bad that the first thing I though when I saw that is "Dodge Caliber?"

If it doesn't look decent here, I'm guessing it won't look decent everywhere. Interior? My guess will be second-rate. Enough to hang in there, but not enough to compete with other interiors.

It looks to me like they designed it to compete with a MKI Focus and other cars that would only sell because they are $2,000 cheaper than Civics and others. And considering that Ford and Hyundai are moving on up, I would guess this will stay floundering with the likes of the Caliber and Kias. But that's just a looks judgment. All of the Chevy cars (and most GM cars) just look cheap from the outside.

I'm wondering if they're re-thinking the massive tail-lights. I like it better with just the single unit on the side.

I think downsizing the Camry for the Corolla worked better for Toyota than this does for Chevrolet. Its not TOO bad but I want to see the coupe version, then I will make up my mind.

(Shhhh... I don't know if there will be a coupe version... At all. I'd hope so, the coupe has been outselling expectations at GM, but given that its a world-market car, I really don't know.)

I SAW THAT!!!!!

Personally, so long as the Turbo SS is fast, I won't care how many doors it will have. Just so long as it's not a 5-door hatchwagon.

It would help out a bunch if they filled in the top part of the grill with additional hood.

It might be for those cooling requirements everybody's always talking of. They need big grilles to get enough air to the radiator...and oil cooler...and A/C condenser...to keep things going smoothly.

Whats wrong with a 5-door hatch wagon?

I LOVE MY HATCH WAGON!

Ill say it again.

I LOVE MY HATCH WAGON!

Don't hate on the hatch wagon.

Although I would prefer if the Cobalt stayed true to its "roots" and kept the coupe. That being said, the styling isn't very "coupe-friendly"

Meh...I was thinking the WRX STI, not a Golf.

Damn, I really need to change my Username...How do I go about doing that?

I currently drive an 08 Mazdaspeed3, fitting the profile of the hatchwagon you reference. Although, I like to call it a Turbowagon.

How do I go about requesting my Username be changed to Turbowagon?

Oh, sorry.

well...I dont' think the hatch version of that particular car (Cobalt) should be the highest-performance variant...or, at least, give us a choice.

I like choices.
