I like it. Like the G8 first photos, I think the rims really set off the car's appearance. 👍

For a Chevy its fairly "radical" in the United States, but quite certainly, it can't hold a candle to your average Peugeot or Citroen. And this is a "world car" after all...

Funny, Citroen and Peugeot have some of my least favourite styling in the world, I'd take a Hyundai over them, but if there's something this can't hold a candle to it's Aston Martin.

It sort of depends on the weight, if GM can keep it in check it won't be all that gutless. I hope they put a 6 speed auto in it for once.

Or the 7spd/8spd they were talking about making.:)

Wow! the Big Four!

That's saying something about a CHEVROLET!!!!

Go Chevy, Go Chevy, it's your 100th birthday, it's your 100th birthday. (Well GM's anyway).

Commenting on the Cobalt... why does it look so stupidly aggressive? Aggressive doesn't always mean good looking.

HUGE Fail on Chevy...

I like it.

It's aggressive, but it's not the new GT-R. So it works.

JDM Fanboi?

EDM fanboi, more likely. You SEEN some of the crazy designs in Japan?

Well, when they're going to be running against cars like these:

...etc...

Its going to have to look "dangerous" to stand out in the crowd on the world stage.

Yeah, I'm not a "fanboi" so lets stop implying that.

Also, point well made YSSMAN. It's Chevy's right to be completely competitive in all aspects of the business, but I think of all the styling out there aggression is the most empowering for imbeciles to come crawling out of the 7 o'clock morning traffic jam woodwork, zig-zagging through blocks of cars like incompetent morons in some tunnel-vision 2 Fast 2 Furious moment.

I also associate aggression always with some level or degree, no matter how minute, of hatred because in the end that's where the designing evolves from rather than being innovatively neutral. It's the oldest, cheapest trick in the economy-level book. We've got no creativity, so lets make some "bat-out-of-hell" look'in econobox. Point being in the level of perplexing accomplishment the other cars attained, none being even a fraction as disgruntled than the Cobalt.

It's just my opinion. Chevorlet could've tried harder. What they ended up with is some awkward looking car that if anything sends a gung-ho vibe that it's going to tare through you with it's 4 cylinder engine if you don't have enough Nuespeed stickers to keep up with it. :)

Yeah? Oh yeah? Well I think it looks like a modern small car.

I don't know, that Civic looks pretty pissed off to me.

Overly aggressive looking cars don't appeal to the masses, boring does. Proof is in how well the Camry continues to sell.

I don't think the current Camry is all that boring, at least not as much as all the previous generations. I guess I could say the same for the Corolla.

+1 👍

Those cars have come a long way, but the Camry is still one of the most boring on the road. The corrola is something I'd rock if it weren't for that little twisty T on the grille

Ok maybe it's not the most boring car but it does show the average population of car buyers doesn't want over-the-top and aggressive styling. Something that looks good but not over done is the way to go. GM really hit that nail on the head with the Cruze it appears. At first I hated it but that was just the camo-ed spy shots.

I wasn't implying, I was asking, hence the question mark, but clearly you have a grudge for GM, or good styling- I can't tell. Aggressive styling doesn't necessarily attract aggressive drivers. I prefer aggressive styling and I'm probably one of the least aggressive drivers out there. Huge size might attract aggressive drivers though, and this is a small car.
Well I think it looks great, if you're going to buy something cheap, it might as well look good right? Just because you spend mediocre money, doesn't mean you get mediocre styling (cue Camry), well done GM, well done.

I'm actually not seeing what you're saying. It looks pretty conservative to me...

especially compared to this.

I personally feel the Cruze looks a bit more upscale, a bit "Nicer" than that which it replaces. It's grown up, mature, not childish-looking, uninspired, and cheap like that which it replaces. There's no "Fast and Furious" vibe...okay, the headlights are a LIT-TLE sharp, and the name...well, it sucks, But I'd actually call the design mature, more serious. More like a mini Lexus with the nose swapped for a Bowtie. Note the lack of huge wing.

If there's something that bugs me, it's design/artwork elitists that think everything has to be a certain way. I'll grant you the stupids weaving through traffic...because the car's cheap, and young people drive cheap cars, NOT because people see the car and go "Ooh, a street racer!"

Why would you have even asked if I were a JDM fanboi? But more relatively, Mr. Jim Prower implied I was a fanboi of some sort. I saw where that conversation was going, so excuse me if I wanted to end it.

Anyway, I don't see how you'd find that I've got some grudge against GM, simply because I don't like the designing of a car that hasn't even come out yet. Can't I just dislike something rather than being rudely sided with "JDM fanois?" If anything at all, GM is my favorite of the big three. Chevy is one of my favorite companies. The Corvette is my all time favorite car (you can call me a Vette fanboi if you want ;) ), and I can't even count how many other Chevy/GM models I'm absolutely infatuated with.

I just simply don't like the design, and I honestly don't think that it's "great styling." I also think it was pretty out of place and inconsiderate to question anyone's sense of style and interests. Lets open our mind and possibly compute the fact that not everyone is the same, and people are going to disagree and when that happens, both sides should expect fair and understanding statements rather than ones of sarcasim and narrow vision. That's all I'm asking. 👍

It looks like it wants to eat my face off.

Even the Cobalt SS looks subdued compared to that. I couldn't even imagine what the '10 Cobalt SS is going to look like. :scared:

No, what I believe this class of car should look like is contemporary, futuristic, fresh, and innovative. If I could describe the new Cobalt in 3 words it would be aggressive, blocky, and cheap. Then I'd continue on saying it looked fat, sluggish, and if not mad at the world it's pretty bland.

It's just my opinion... I look at cars like the Civic, the 308, the Camry, and I just think those designers really tried and really worked at it. I look at the Cobalt and I'm just unimpressed entirely.

Well, I guess that's your loss, then. I honestly dislike most of the Civic variations, The 308's (Peugeot, not Ferrari) huge gaping maw, and the huge schnozz on the Camry.

Oakey doakey, like Jim Prower, I think you're missing out here, and please don't ever, ever say the Camry designers tried, ever again.:sly:

Overly aggressive looking cars don't appeal to the masses, boring does. Proof is in how well the Camry continues to sell.

That's because all the old geezers are trading in their Towncars for them. I swear, Camries are like cargasms for the elderly. Every old person I know that sees a Camry on the road says something like, "Oh, what kind of car is that?" much in the same way they would've reacted to a strikingly handsome man or beautiful woman walk by during their virile youth. Even my grandpa once tried to open another person's car after he mistook their Camry for his C350. :banghead:

There is something unique about the Camry that we will not discover until we too are old.

/endrant

This Chevy, however, is just a clone of the fashion.

Like the Cobalt that preceded it, the benchmark for the Cruze was the VW Golf/Jetta. Although stylistically it is quite a bit more progressive, I don't think you're going to see too many people off-put by it. Sure, its Malibu-esque, but its a good look for the brand. Its distinctive, attractive, and in the end Chevrolet makes a vanilla car for the masses that has some level of sportiness baked in.

Toyota does much the same with the SE/XRS trim levels on their cars, so I can't fault them too much either.

I had always thought that the Camry sold well because people said "ZOMGS RELIABILITY" whenever they heard Toyota and would like a car that doesn't really do anything but be practical and be reliable instead of buying a car that did all sorts of cool stuff and was everything but reliable, like a VW would do. The masses certainly have a different taste. They just want to get from point A to point B and would consider driving a chore compared to those of us here who would like to get from point A to point B, possibly making a detour through point C and enjoy every minute of it.

On the topic of conservative vs. aggressive styling, it depends on whether the buyer wants something flashy or not. A lot of people here would want a car that makes people say "Ooh, what's that? It looks cool..." while there are certainly people who want to blend in.

Any idea of the source of the name change? I'm guessing they just want a fresh start and are trying to ditch the nature of the old car?

I thought Cobalt was a lame name for a vehicle to begin with, going to elemental like the Neon. Cruze isn't much better though.

It sounds like it is trying to be a Californian surfer type person car. And the spelling makes it really seem like they are trying to appeal to the younger crowd. They certainly should be marketing to younger people, but giving it a California name kind of makes it seem like they are trying to do well on the West Coast, a place where GM really has a small slice of the market and where they don't stand a chance against the Japanese cars.

I assume its just a global name... Maybe they'll stick with Cobalt in the US, I don't know, but it isn't as though Cruze is that bad. Problem is, they just spent a gazillion dollars touting the Cobalt name, why throw it all away again?

Problem is, they just spent a gazillion dollars touting the Cobalt name, why throw it all away again?

No matter how much money they poured into the Cobalt name, it will still be attached to, well, the Cobalt, which wasn't exactly an amazing car. I wouldn't be surprised if GM didn't want you to think about the Cobalt when you buy this new car.

Would people forget about the old car? Maybe. But it seems that one of the biggest advertisers for a car is it's legacy. A good car with a bad history won't sell as well as a good car with a good history. And this is especially true if you are selling a good car that was not so good just a generation before.

At least that's my take on it.

Blah, Lacetti would be a better name than "Cruze." and the former is a cheap Daewoo rebadge whose only worthwhile version is the WTCC car.

Nova might not be a bad name.

Problem is, they just spent a gazillion dollars touting the Cobalt name, why throw it all away again?
Because American companies are stupid and seem to feel the need to do so every time they redesign a model. That being said, actually naming a production car "Cruze" is one of the largest insults to a car's target demographic's intelligence that I have heard of in quite a long time.
