Just saw the replay from the tower cam and it looks like Kyle's car not only hit that car but was also hit by another car (looks like the 2 car of Scott) at the same time and those simutanious hits launched Larson's car into the fence.

To me it looked like someone clipped the rear as it was going sideways, which got the back end airbourne.

They haven't broken an laws, so its legal and they are allowed to do it. Tbh I hope this is a wake up call to NASCAR - its disgusting what has happened and shouldn't of happened.
 
What about raising up the grandstands? They may also have to keep spectators away from the fence at all times during the race.

Oh yeah it's legal. Just poor poor taste.

NASCAR's problem is pack racing leads itself to this kind of racing. No drivers are doing anything "wrong" as such. It;s the nature of the racing.

You've missed my point. If the cars can't push each other because they can't get close enough to push each other because the lack of downforce won't let them, then this nonsense won't happen.

It doesn't matter if the cars cant push each other. That makes no damn difference to a guy spinning and being tboned like happened here. No matter what you do nothing can be done about it, even taking the plates off the draft would just become an even bigger thing. Take downforce off? Pfft, the whole point of 31° banking is so you don't need downforce. Ban bumpdrafting? Aint going to do crap as was shown in the past. About the only that can be done is out the grandstands 500 feet above the track. And still I'm sure something could get there. You cant make everything perfect, **** happens.

Alright than, how exactly do you stop freak accidents?

These things happen to all motorsports, thankfully it's much more rare than it was at one point. There is no way to completely stop fan's being injured in accidents like this apart from removing either the racing or the fans.

Short of building an enclosed fence over the whole track, what do you propose they do? I'm not sure if any of you know this, but when you buy a ticket to a race it says clearly on the back that injuries can happen from flying debris and that they are not liable. They've made improvements to the fence in the past, and to be honest it takes an event like this to bring in new safety innovations.

I agree its poor but that's what media is like these days, if there's a story that can be sold they will sell it away they can. But I don't think its wrong. If people think its wrong then maybe NASCAR shouldn't get itself into this mess.

Whatever it is, the nature of the sport or the cars drivers whatever something has to change. I think you're reaction is more an answer Furi - you're shocked and frustrated, but the DailyMail did nothing wrong: NASCAR did.
 
At Daytona, where cars are going 200 mph, the fans can set basically right there at the fence, but in the corners at Martinsville, the stands are a good 25 feet away from the fence.
 
You can't blame a sport for something that can't be prevented. Unfortunately, spectators are injured in more than just NASCAR. You are warned before you go to a race, of any kind, not just NASCAR - that motorsports are dangerous and you can get injured. It doesn't happen a lot, but sadly, it happened today.
 
^^^ Edit: Agreed. Wasn't there a couple people injured in a rally race last week?

I don't know about other tracks, but here in Phoenix you're not allowed near the fence while cars are on track. I still think that taking out the first ~10 rows of seats would be a good idea. Not like they fill them all up anyway...

The safety in the car was good, but the Catch fence is what failed... I'm betting they will be double checking and re-enforcing that real soon.

I wouldn't say the catch fence failed. It kept a car hurling at speed from doing tremendous damage to the spectators. It could've been far worse.
It also seemed to keep the engine from going further than it would've.

The catch fence did its job.
The people shouldn't have been seated so close to the fence. Perhaps they should elevate the seats somehow.

The speedway have unveiled plans to renovate the frontstands, so this event might make the renovations of raising the grandstands a possible reality.

Because in Daytona if someone loses their throttle they'll hit a gradual turn, not a head on wall. I've had front row seat on Daytona (pit exit) and yes the thought goes through your head that this isn't safe. But you chose to stay there and watch.
 
NASCAR didn;t do anything "wrong" - it's an accident. You cannot legislate for every type of accident.
 
Not much can be done about the grandstands. Also, it would be ridiculous to build a much larger catchfence since debris in this crash went flying well over the top of the fence itself.

Eliminate the pack racing and you eliminate the pack of destruction. These wrecks only happen in packs, and they only race in packs at Talladega and Daytona.

Well its a contact sport. Isnt NASCAR famous for being violent? On and off track? Its hard to tell but from my view it looked like he tapped him into a spin to try and take advantage.

It's called bump drafting and is completely different than trying to take someone out.

The hit into the fence was NOT intentional. It was a freak accident. Plate racing is known for being aggressive, but not murderious as you seem to imply.
 
NASCAR a contact sport, i'll remind you Strawman that you, and indeed me, are big fans of one of the most high contact sports around, the BTCC.

There was a block, ONE block allowed as in any other move, and they clipped each other. It happens.

I haven't heard anything about injuries last week, but in the WRC's first rally this season, Monte Carlo, a stage was cancelled after spectators were injured.

People are reacting to this like they do with shootings... changing the stands won't stop injuries like this from happening, just as gun laws won't stop shootings. If a tyre wants to fly into the crowd, it will do so. The only thing you could possibly do to stop that is have the spectators in a cage. That's not fun now, is it?
