Looks wise, its a giant leap over the COT from the past few years. Its no longer this brick where only some slight body indentions, window screens and decals are the only things that seperate it. The Roof decals appear to be optional so far as some cars featured it and some didn't and again, they didn't look anywhere near as bad as I was thinking they were gonna be.

Performance wise, it looks like the 2-car draft so far is nearly gone. I suspect the shorter spoiler no longer carries the air the nose punches at as high angle as the old spoiler, which in turn no longer carries the air over the roof of the following car.

I agree the cars look much better. Each brand is easily identifiable now. One thing thats bothering me is how flat the rear of the cars are, almost like theres no bumper at all. Maybe with more paint and sponsors it wont stick out as much.

I realize the cars probably wont ever be as shapely as they were in the 90s- early 2000s to make them safer so Im fine with that.

As for how they race, well, I cant say anything about that yet. The two car draft is probably here to stay as long as the bumpers on the cars line up so well. Before the COT the bumpers didnt line up at all, if you tried to push a guy especially through the corners you'd pick his car up and spin him out.

As it's already been answered as to why they aren't setting lighting fast speeds.....

Facepalm...

Half the field are not testing. Their not going for fastest laps. They just want to get mils down.

Commentary is hilarious  - 192mph solo is  fast.

The tandem drafting will be too risky to try before the last few laps. The bumpers don't really line up at all. the Toyotas set the fastest lap times in a single line draft. They have to be really careful when drafting in tandem because when hamlin was pushing Kenseth, Kenseth's car got damaged.

What about that rumor about austin Dillon running some Cup races with Phoenix racing? did that fall through because of the 33 or is it still a possibility?

Live stream of practice is back.

Danica Patrick seems to be on the top of the leaderboard a lot at Daytona.

Dave Blaney has damage on his car. Not sure how his car got damaged, but Tommy Baldwin Racing is done testing because of it.

Sorry to double post, but hearing that he'll be in the 51 at Vegas.

By the way, Danica bears a strong resemblance to Stacy Compton, whose Cup career was largely rushed and he ended up leaving the series pretty much empty handed, with only one top ten finish to his record despite his obvious talent. Compton happened to be at his best in, you guessed it, plate tracks. For reference, his plate track qualifying spots in 2001 were 2nd, 1st, 3rd and 1st. In the infamous Daytona 500, he came 10th and finished 33rd in the standings, which ended up being his best finish in a season.

Thus, there's still no need for panic if miss Patrick happens to somehow match the boys' pace in Daytona. :p

Well, the qualifying isn't the driver's talent as much as the crew's ability to build fast race cars. I'm only talking about plate races of course.

Was Compton ever good at Road Courses? Sure its only been in a Nationwide car and it helped that Ron Fellows was there, but Danica has been a very good on the Road Courses (Ironically, something she couldn't even grasp in Indycars).

Edit: Judging by the way these cars react trying to suck up to another car, looks like the 2 car tandem is all gone. Not only do the bumpers not line up, but they also cannot push each other straight (at least according to Biffle and Bayne).

Not particularly. In fact his only DNQ in 2002 was from Sonoma.

I've started watching some of the Preseason action. Great looking cars, especially the Chevrolet models. I am sure all the teams will get it together with the newer cars. I have to wonder how the new car fares on the various kinds of ovals and road courses. Everything will probably be all figured out when the first of the real races get underway.

The Stewart-Haas cars (and a few others) get away unscathed.

Testing might just have ended right there.

Did anyone see the list of drivers who wrecked and how it said, "Kasay Kahne"?

No worky.

Thats really good news. I just hope a counter effect is they made it too hard to draft

The cars looked stable when spinning out at high speed even after getting hit again broadside. Those extra large roof flaps are doing their job
