I doubt Hamlin will be in the car for a few weeks, and I hope he doesn't try to push things too quickly in an attempt to get back in the car either. That was a nasty hit he took, and I'm just glad it wasn't worse than what it seems to be.

As said before, its made Logano an enemy because of Bristol mainly, had Bristols feud not happened would this discussion be going on? I don't think so.

What does this say about the safety of the car, if anything at all? The COT raced 5-6 years without an injury like this. Just a freak accident? Or should there be more safety in the seat? Toyota has foam seats in it's prototypes that probably saved Davidson from paralysis. Maybe NASCAR should consider upgrades to its seats. Im wondering if it was the hit or the drop that did more damage. I hope Hamlin has a speedy and full recovery.

So far, the gen6 cars are racing much better then the COT, the only exception being the Daytona race. Keselowski was able to drive from dead last at the start to 15th in around 30 laps. He and other drivers were able to do that multiple times. Hamlin was around 20th with 20 laps to go and almost won. So yes the tires falling off in performance did help alot, but there has been gains made in the quality of racing when everyone is on fresh tires. There was very little tire strategy at Las Vegas, but the race had the most passes ever.

NASCAR couldnt really ask for a better start to the season. 5 races, 5 different winners. The Gen6 car is producing more passing and it did it at two of the worst tracks on the schedule, Las Vegas and California. Dale Jr is leading the points. Theres alot of feuds going on. The only two hickups so far are the lackluster Daytona 500, and Danica Patrick's weak performances so far.

I still have faith in the safety of the Gen-6 car and all NASCAR has done over these past few years.

There will always be a danger of injury in motorsport.

Well, that pretty much means Logano is now a public enemy.

R1600Turbo
For some. I don't think it's his fault.

The next race is in Virginia. Hamlin is treated like a god there. He'll be booed worse than Jeff Gordon or Kyle Busch ever were.

Not so sure about the cause of the injury, as I understand it Denny had injured his back before. Having a crushed disk in my neck and a tendon ripped from a disk in my low back I can tell for certain, it is much easier to re-injure your spine once you have already damaged it. I would agree though, that safer walls should probably surround the entire track, both inside and out. At least for the larger, faster (1.5+mi) tracks. As much as I hate to think about it, with the ever increasing speeds, maybe the docs should have a bit more say in what conditions a driver can remain a driver with. Is the potential damage really worth our entertainment?

Why not put a couple of rows of tyres by the inside wall, I'd imagine recycling some old tyres would be cheaper and absorb a lot more of the impact than safer barriers.

Hopefully there's SAFER barriers where Denny hit before the next motorsports event, along with the whole front stretch, because somebody's bound to crash hard there as well. As for the race, typical California for the first 188 laps, awesome *gasp* racing the final 12. 👍 The whole Stewart going after Logano for the block on the final restart was 🤬, because he apparently forgot about the "block" he pulled at Talladega.

Tires also slingshot the car after you make contact with them at high speed. Could throw the car back across the racing line.

Any part of the track that can be hit should have safer barrier. Apparently the reasoning behind where safer barrier goes is based on "previous incidents". So here is a great example of learning from mistakes instead of trying to prevent them.

I think alot of effort needs to be put into making the seats in the cars safer. Toyota's prototye Le Mans cars have foam in their seats to help reduce the impact on a driver's spine. I doubt NASCAR has anything that advanced in their seats. They need to look into it.

Drag racer style parachutes could help slow cars that are sliding at high speed toward inside walls, but you have to wonder about the possibility of a chute somehow coming lose or being activated during a race and blinding a trailing driver

Why not just make the Sprint Cup Series into the Unlimited Division from NASCAR Racers? Gen-7 car maybe?

The foam seats would be a great addition I believe as well but I'm wondering if anyone knows if Gibbs runs the full carbon seats? I know that Hendrick pioneered them but not all the teams use them cause of cost. I know Roush is a team that does not use them.

Denny had issues with his back anyway, he walked away from head on hit. I say safety is perfectly fine with the car as that was a hard hit period. Very few hit head on like that without some issue but his bad back doesn't help matters.

Hopefully he takes it safe and doesn't push too hard to get back in the car either risking more injury.

I just think that odd incline on the inside (which no other track has) combined with Denny's previous back issues (which Kyle mentioned as well on Victory Lane) made for the worst circumstance possible.

Really, that part should at least be grinded down as I get the feeling even safer barrier won't stop that kind of launch.

Elliott Sadler will be in a 4th car for Gibbs at some point in the season.

Sadler to run Sprint Cup race in 2013: Elliot Sadler is scheduled to run at least one un-named NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in 2013, running the #81 Alert Energy Toyota for Joe Gibbs Racing. This new energy product, was recently introduced by the Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company. The scheme is purple, orange-and-yellow.(lionelnascarcollectables.com.(3-26-2013)

It probably has to do with water run off and keep it from pooling up at the wall and not dry.

Well, the lack of SAFER barrier didn't exactly help.
Honestly with how point blank the blow was Denny should be thankful he's alive.
I'd expect to see him in some capacity at Martinsville, because he might just be more loved there then Jr. (He had more cheers then him at driver introductions when I went in October). Maybe as a grand marshal or honorary starter or something with FOX.

That could be thrown out of the window if Hamlin doesn't return and Sadler might be brought up to take his place in #11 till he recovers
