EDIT:
More money doesn't mean a safer car.

The fact that Stewart has nearly-unlimited funds doesn't guarantee that he has a safer car. But, he would have to be an absolute idiot to not make his car as safe as possible, without a typical Sprint car racer's tight budget to constrain him. You can forgive the low-budget weekend warriors for not having top-of-the-line parts on their car. For Stewart, not having enough money to do it right wouldn't be an acceptable excuse.

In fact, here's info from Stewart about his Sprint Car, as relayed by ESPN's David Newton:

"He explained that he takes every precaution, that his sprint cars are 80 pounds heavier than most of the competition's because of the full-containment seat he uses."

Yes, but without any safety features to fully protect the driver, being able to get the best seat isn't the 100% fix for it.

There is no such thing as "fully" protecting the driver. Stewart could be running a more complete cage made of a thicker or stronger metal, though. I'm sure his seat, belts, brakes, and helmet are all top-notch.

There's no doubt in my mind that Stewart's Sprint car is probably the safest one on the track everywhere he races.

Either way, he still ended up with a broken leg, which meant he took a really hard hit.

Also, just announced that Max Papis is racing the #14 this weekend at Watkins Glen.

I really wish they would have been able to get Robby Gordon. He might be the only guy that could come in from nowhere and have a chance to win a Sprint Cup road course race. Maybe Papis will keep it clean and bring home a top 20.

Too bad Danica doesn't know that there is no asymmetrical tread pattern on the tire to have an effect on stopping distance. (TireRack.com based joke)

Also.. Tony Stewart picking Robby Gordon?

Laugh it up, but Robby Gordon has won a Sprint Cup race at both Sears Point and Watkins Glen, one of only 10 drivers to have won at both race tracks in the Sprint Cup (Juan Montoya, Tony Stewart, Kyle Busch, Robby Gordon, Jeff Gordon, Geoff Bodine, Mark Martin, Ernie Irvan, Ricky Rudd, and Rusty Wallace).

Only Kyle Busch (2008), Tony Stewart (2005), Robby Gordon (2003), and Jeff Gordon (1998, 1999) won both races in the same season.

At Watkins Glen specifically, Robby Gordon has 7 career top-5 finishes, from 1997 through 2007, the last two of which came in his own underfunded one-car team.

He finished 2nd to Jimmie Johnson at Sears Point just three years ago (2010), again, in his own underfunded one-car team.

The guy might be a complete jerk, but he's a hell of a good road course driver, even in 2nd/3rd-tier equipment (see Busch, Kurt). Gordon's chance to win might have been small, but it would still be a lot higher than Papis's 0% chance this Sunday.

In Stewart's #14 car, I think Robby could bring home a top-10 pretty easily, with a 50/50 chance at a top-5.

They aren't looking for wins, they're looking for decent finishes. It just so happened that Papis had already tested the car at Road Atlanta a few weeks ago.

Robby is busy with his Stadium Truck Series anyway.

I think they said that because of how the two have not gotten along in the past.

He doesn't have to ride in the car with him for 3 hours.

As the car owner, he does need as many owner points as possible though, if he wants his car in the Chase for the Owner's championship.

Just realised as to why Papis is a no brainer, but correct me as I am wrong. Papis drives the #33 Kevin Harvick Inc Chevrolet in the Nationwide Series at road courses, and the #33 is the car Stewart uses whenever he drives in Nationwide. In addition, who runs the #33? Kevin Harvick's team (at least I remember he used to...). And who joins SHR in Sprint Cup next year? Harvick...
