If Roush could be competent and find some power I think they might emerge as a third man in Hendrick vs Gibbs.

Did you NOT see kurt at sonoma in 2012???

Did you not see the rest of his career? Between Bush and Harvick, no media reporters or crew chiefs will come near them.

I will say he has matured a lot over the last 2 years, but old habits die hard and I wouldn't be shocked to see the old Kurt re-emerge now that he's back in a top-tier ride.

Because you need to have a rival in the same make as you do to be competitive. Boy, wonder what that made Bobby Allison.

Exactly, and how does having all the resources by being the only team to run a brand not help you win. It sure seemed to do some good for Roger last year, a hell of a lot more than this year. Either way Dodge get to look like they sat pretty at the end of the day by leaving with a cup championship, even if manufactures is all but an unseen and underground competition now days.

Well harvick has been no where as bad as Kurt in RECENT years! Yes I know Kevin was a headcase as a rookie.

Did you forget how his last couple of years at Penske went, and that he had major issues with NASCAR?

Possible rule changes next year.

NASCAR has been looking at new technical rules to tweak the cars for 2014. A mid-December test at Charlotte Motor Speedway, yet another NASCAR test there, should help set things. NASCAR is now expected to bring the 'tapered spacer' to the Cup series, to try to take 90 horsepower out of these 900 horsepower engines. NASCAR has tested a roof 'wicker,' running left-to-right, designed to disturb the air; that design was used some 10 years ago, briefly, but it appears the sanctioning body is rejecting that change. NASCAR will be using larger rear spoilers next season. And NASCAR is expected to add some holes in the rear bumpers, to vent under-car air flow.

The wicker looks dumb, and is a cheap fix to a bad car! I don't really mind cutting engine power because I think that isn't going to matter overall to the racing either.

Putting air holes in the back bumper is going to help cars back in traffic get a little more front downforce back on their splitter. Adding more rear spoiler is going to add rear downforce for everyone. But, the problem is that these cars already have too much downforce. Combine more downforce with less power, and the cars might as well drive themselves. How about LESS DOWNFORCE and more power with softer tires, so that the better drivers win the race, instead of just the best cars.

The Phoenix action begins tonight. First to contest this one-mile thrill ride will be the NASCAR Trucks.

Good luck to all drivers and teams competing this weekend.

Technically, Dodge has been involved in situations like this twice, but with different exits. Last year is the obvious one, with Dodge leaving NASCAR, but don't forget when Dodge left Ultra Motorsports after they won the championship in 2005, they signed with (and were then screwed over by) Ford, and shut down altogether.

Because they tried that, ask Jeff Burton. These cars, like the last two sets, are too aero-dependent, so how does taking downforce away make things better? Adding downforce will slow down the cars firstly, next should make them more stable for everyone because they stick more and can be driven as opposed to procession lines, and speaking of that will allow anyone in a draft to close up faster. Softer tires might be an idea, but most people hear that and for NASCAR go back to Indy in 2008. The thing about mechanical grip is that like anything else mechanical, there is a limit how far you can go.

And as for this weekend, Matt Crafton can clinch the Truck Series title by winning the race, or by finishing 3-5 spots ahead of Buescher and 4-6 over Ty Dillon. Go Matt.

Taking away front downforce, especially the front splitter, would make the cars more equal in traffic, negating the huge advantage to the lead car in cleaner air. Adding some front downforce to the trailing cars isn't the answer, as the lead cars will still have superior front downforce. Raise the cars up, take away the front splitters, and let the drivers DRIVE the cars through the corners for a change.

I like college basketball and all, but... I also love me some racing. Boston College and Providence are going into Overtime, delaying NCWTS Setup a bit. Don't you just love FOX Sports 1? They'll get to work eventually. And hopefully, we'll have some Trucks racing at Phoenix.

M.Ryan: Okay, now THAT I get. Cuts the handling down by a fair bit, forces them to slow down, and it doesn't become a box blade the moment it touches the lawn.

JBM: I would if there was enough of a presence to make a stink about it. Though I am surprised, I haven't actually seen any NASCAR racing on FS1 in a while, I was starting to wonder if what they cared to show hadn't been relegated to FS2.

EDIT: Apparently Kyle Petty is looking at running for a seat in the U.S. Congress, specifically the House of Representatives. He also mentioned Terry Labonte, which probably wouldn't hurt (source:Jayski)

Truck race is official now. Steven Wallace and Jon Wes Townley involved in the same caution.

There's about 30 laps left and Ross Chastain is leading.

A boy became a man and won tonight's Truck race at Phoenix. Erik Jones... congratulations, young man! And I mean YOUNG man: 17 years, 5 months, 9 days (born: May 30, 1996). He's the youngest driver to ever win in NASCAR Trucks history. Congratulations to him and the #51 Toyota team.

If Mark's tenure at SHR as a sort of guru behind the scenes is anything like what he brought to MWR in that capacity, there's going to be a huge turnaround next year.

Don't believe it, because 99.999% of Facebook posts are complete 🤬. On the "proposed rules changes", once again NASCAR confirms they have no 🤬 brains. A larger rear spoiler will make the cars even more aero dependent then they are now, leading to record amounts of the funeral procession racing common with the Gen-6 car. Also, cutting the power with the tapered spacer will not help, because the "drivers" will have to run the corners very hard in order to keep their lap speeds up, therefore running side-by-side in the corners will be impossible without wrecking. 👎

The fact that the Truck, the least aero dynamic of the three top division vehicles is also aero sensitive, doesn't leave me with a lot of faith that this Aero problem is ever going to be fixed.

The new truck should be interesting to see next season. Here's something I thought of a bit ago, if you gave these cars the downforce Indycars have, there should be only one reason for procession racing, they don't have the power. I don't see them living with this or what they're doing at all, they are testing in December to finalize this. Considering that test sessions begin mid January, I'd say that they are waiting for something to affirm their beliefs about the car as is. And I don't think the spacer will be a solution, unless you liked watching the 2000? New Hampshire race.....

(Sudden Brainwave.)

Dammit. I seem to have forgotten something Burton said at TMS. "They are looking to improve the quality of racing at 1.5 mile tracks". Meaning NASCAR will be sacrificing all the others just to improve the crap tracks they invested in.

If NASCAR stopped repaving every track, the problem wouldn't be as bad. I fear the day they repave Atlanta.

Or they could at least repave every track with an asphalt that isn't so damn grippy.

Meanwhile, Austin Dillon has gained two points on Sam Hornish Jr. Title fight is still alive, though Hornish will really have to drive his heart out for this one next week if Dillon's pace continues to be better.

One last time around Phoenix. This time, it's the Cup drivers ready to take on this fabulous oval. Good luck and best wishes to all teams and drivers today. Race 'em hard.

I am seriously considering watching Miami next week. Last year I didn't care as I wasn't interested in either watching another Jimmie Johnson Championship nor that moron Brad (who this year justified my decision). Now however, this involves a driver that I already liked, driving for a team I like and possibly getting another championship for both (yay).
