LM P1 cars have been pushing the definition of 'efficient vision to the rear' for a while, but Audi have now jumped the shark!

LM P1 Tech Regs;

Rear view mirrors

Two rear view mirrors (one each side) must provide an efficient vision to the rear.

The Scrutineers must be assured through a practical demonstration that the driver, seated normally, can clearly see the vehicles following him.
To this end, the driver will be asked to identify letters or figures, 15 cm high and 10 cm wide, displayed at random on boards placed behind the car according to the following instructions :

- Height : Between 40 cm and 100 cm from the ground.
- Width : 2 m one side or the other from the centreline of the car.

- Position : 10 m behind the centreline of the rear axle of the car.

Minimum area : 100 cm2 for each mirror.

They must have a day/night mode. A film may be added on the mirror.

Camera

It is permitted to add cameras on the car and screens inside the cockpit for rear and front/side vision. The screens must have a day/night mode.
The cameras are allowed to protrube over the maximum height of the car at the condition that a specific allowance is given during Homologation of the car.

The purpose of their design cannot be to provide some aerodynamic benefit.

The camera must have a day/night mode.

Very clever. Mirrors in an LMP1 are not so important anyway if they have a monitor. Its not like they are being lapped or anything.... Team By kolles!

I missed a big clue. The number 7 in on the side of the test car! Now I'm confused!

I am really interested in how this race will play out. This won't just give us a favourite for Le mans but for the WEC as well!

Why are you confused by the number on the car?
Because the number 7 crew are Audi's best bet at a world title! Why would they risk a big points scoring Finnish using the low drag car when the other cars could do the testing. I'm not just saying that because they won at silverstone, I'm saying that because the number 7 team is probly the most experienced in the entire grid.

Then surely that would mean they are the best group under the Audi banner to get the necessary data required from the low-drag setup, and be able to utilize it the best during the race.

If that was the case then wouldn't they run 3 low drag cars? The data that the 7 would receive would be the same as the 8 would get.

In my opinion, if they are using a low drag body with one of the full season cars they are effectively signing them out of the race, because they are probly not going to win.if you had a choose whitch car you are going to sign out of the race would it be the car with the most experience or the team with less?

They're running 2 low drag cars...
sorry they must have been a little confusion.

If they are going to test the low drag car, why would they use the car most likely to do well in the race? usually they only have one low drag car for spa, that got to mean something.

the amount of data that the team are getting would be the same if the number 8 was low drag! This is more for the engineers then for the drivers.

Edit: if they are going to let a car fall out of contention they must think that the car wasn't in contention in the first place.

why would you take the risk? down force was the only advantage audi had over there rivals!
It's much more sensible to risk a few points in one race than turn up to the biggest event of the season with an unproven package.

surly if they wanted to be as prepared for the big event as possible, wouldn't they use 3 low drag cars?

Not exactly. Previous times they have mixed and matched parts from Spa to Le Mans... I can't source that right now but I've seen it done. Primarily when they tinker with engine maps/ratios... the whole lot.. It's not just making two versions of a car on purpose, it combine the best of the best for Le Mans..

That's just doing the opposite though, that's risking everything for potentially nothing. With one proven car, at least you something to fall back on in the incredibly unlikely event of the other two cars being wildly off the pace.

They were talking about snow in the forecast but that seems to have changed for now.

Thursday: FP1 & 2 70% chance of rain high of 50F/10c
Friday: FP3 and Qual 20% chance of rain high of 52F/11c
Saturday: Race day cloudy and a high 58F/14c

then it makes sense to put your best team (number 7) in the already proven car. then you can test the new parts with the other team.

...Or develop that car the most and get the drivers some miles with the package, etc. You're looking way too deeply into this. It's not going to flop.

yea I'm sure whatever Audi are doing they are doing it right.

Take it like this.... If McNish, TK, and Dindo were all still here and replaced Lotterer and his gang, who would you want running the car? Me personally I want Alan and his gang, but it's my preference.

And LMP3 cars... I never knew they existed..

in my opinion my favourite line up would be McNish, Lottere and Duval. no reson other then i think they would be the fastest line up!

This is the first season of LMP3 and they currently only race in the European Le Mans series!

I think the LMP3 sounds great. Its actually not the sort of sound I was expecting from the Nissan Powerplant. While its not the bass noise the Chevy V8 in the ORECA FLM09 is, its got some grunt to it.
