I think he's just being bullish. He's not lying down and letting people pass him, he's making people work for the overtake.

His inexperience is showing, sure, but I like what I see and I hope we have an exciting driver like him for many seasons to come. Given some further coaching he'll be just fine.

Max is like Vegeta. He'd rather destroy himself and take his enemy with him in the process, than to live with his enemy being better than him, and let them pass.
