5.5 isn't big at all...the fact that these engines are being compared to stuff you raced back in the day is even more entertaining to read.

Way to miss the point entirely, I guess you know better than nearly every auto manufacturer in existence that is moving to turbo and hybrid tech.

These days with 2L engines being able to produce so much power, 5,5L has become relatively quite big.

The 2L V4 is quite different from a inline for one, two it's coupled with a turbo and still doesn't make the power of the V8s or 6 cyl. in GTE. Most of it's power comes from the hybrid unit and the fact that the engine is pretty much a part of the cars frame for perfect balance due to the nature of being a V4. However, as V8s go a 5.5 NA isn't that big.

But they shouldn't. I can't stand the artificial-ness of modern turbos. Ruins just about every engine. That clean, visceral roar of an NA engine is something that cannot be rid of from the automotive world. Race cars have to have a raw emotion to them, like the Corvette, 458, Porsche and Aston.

Not without some Duracell's and electric drills powering the wheels.
Racing has a lot to do with entertainment. That engine sound entertains my ears. A LOT. :dopey:

I know but end of the day a fast car matters more than a loud one. What was more successful? The wailing Aston Martin DBR1-2 or the Audi R18 TDI?

you're acting like cars with turbos are incapable of sounding good

Where do I indicate that? If you're running a unit that creates power like forced induction then you have no need to run that size of an engine, you can downsize. It was just a few years ago that Merc 5.5 v8 was considered small in the face of the 6.2 chevy still makes. Now they've downsized to a 4l tt V8, because it makes the same power as a supercharged 5.5, and does it at a better range and with more efficiency.

All it took was Turbo technology coming to the point is currently sits.

I'll just drop this here. 8 liter V8

This is a great example of how far we've come with motorsport.

Engines are a fraction of the size, miles lighter, use probably 10% of the fuel that does, yet they kick out even more power and they can be pushed even harder.

We don't remind ourselves of it much, but motoring in general would be in a much poorer place if it wasn't for the technology we've seen developed in motorsport. We really have come on leaps and bounds.

Big engine failure. Safety car going to be long...
