Too true. Advertising and proper planning go a long way.

BTW, did Senna ever drive on an oval? His death was probably the most important in the world for causing a mental shift towards safety, and was NOT on an oval.

Nope...and don't bring that into this...his steering snapped on an high speed corner (which now has a chicane).


Yes road courses are dangerous too...any race track can be...but Nascar ovals (2.0 and 1.5 miles) are stupidity for Indycars (aka...that gap between GP2 and F1 in terms of outright road course speed).

Difference is as I said above... Texas is a narrow steep 1.5 miler, Auto Club is a wide flat-ish 2.0 mile circuit.
 
Sato has always been reckless. Karam is inexperienced and could have used more developmental time before being tossed into Indycar.

Not to mention that they've had a feud since this year's Indianapolis 500, bubbling over to the Detroit Double-Header weekend where Karam intentionally crashed into Jack Hawksworth twice because he thought it was Sato's car... But yeah, the drivers NEED to respect each other on an Oval like Fontana, or at Pocono or Indy or there will be a "Big One"-style accident sooner or later.

The whole Fontana debate really seems to run along generational lines. Young folks seemed to like/love it, the older guard, not so much...

TV drew big numbers. TV is the big thing, still. You need big TV #s to be viable. And you need young people to sustain a sport, long-term.

It's been a really fascinating few days. The race clearly got people talking. Which is something 90-ish % of IndyCar races lately haven't.
 
NBC Sports Network said last weekend's event at Fontana, Calif., was its most-watched IndyCar Series race in four seasons.

The MAVTV500 on Saturday averaged 512,000 viewers, the network said. The Grand Prix of Baltimore in 2011 averaged 591,000 viewers.

The race was marked by a league-record 80 official lead changes, close racing and a spectacular crash near the end involving Ryan Briscoe and Ryan Hunter-Reay.Graham Rahal won.

NBCSN said this year's viewership was up 83 percent (280,000) over last year's Fontana race, which was late on Aug. 30.

I've seen that it was around 3,000 that were actually there. That's not the kind of ticket sales that help sustain a series at a venue.
...3,000? :scared: Jesus you could get more people by screaming: "Free food!". That's pathetic.
 
I have a random question for folks since I can't really find out much info outside of like one shop.

Do any Indycar shops actually have a lobby/giftshop/viewing area? I am making a trip up there for the Brickyard 400 and thought I will try to visit some if I can (I am going to the Dallara factory).
 
If you are going to Indy, there are several things to do there, including the museum and other things inside the facility. Outside, I'm not sure, but like @GTPorsche said, Andretti is a good business that wants your interest.

If you go to IMS there will be plenty of small gift "trailers" that'll sell die-casts, Shirts, hats, maybe more. The Dallara factory I don't know, but if they have open tours I assume they will.
 
The weather was partly to blame for Fontana attendance... but earlier in the conference he mentions that it wasn't as hot as they were expecting and it effected the aero setup for the cars...

So, how exactly was the weather a factor in fan attendance?

Dallara isn't an issue, they have tours and things to do. I wasn't really looking for places to buy things more of just visiting race shops, some teams have stuff for sale but I bet alot don't.

Andretti does have shop tours. Although I'm guessing that's probably the shop you got info on since they seem to be the most open towards fans.

Actually it was KV Racing, they don't do shop tours during race season.

AA really doesn't have much info to go off of, nor does any other page for other teams. My plan was to spend Friday visiting some things outside IMS since it's a travel day for me. I'm there Saturday and Sunday with hot passes so those days will be spent all day at IMS.
 
Things I took from that call.
1) Schedule expanding. Labor Day may not be where the season ends, but the season may start in February.
2) Road America in serious talks that may get it on the calendar.
3) Phoenix might be a February race.
4) International markets want IndyCar. Where? I'd like to know.
5) Fontana was in general, great for IndyCar. Now they need a date that will definitively work.
6) IndyCar working to keep Milwaukee on the calendar.
7) IndyCar wants a 7 month, 20 race schedule, says a calendar should be out before season ends.
8) IndyCar wants to keep the ovals they have on the calendar as long as they can, but also keep trying new places.
9) Reason for IndyCar ending early is becasue TV networks would have serious problems broadcasting later in the year. Believable since NBCSN will be airing a majority of the NASCAR races after July 4th.
10) Aero kits have not worked like they expected them to, but they expect next season to be better as far as debris fests go.

They need to schedule their races so they don't clash with NASCAR. That's the best way they can gain viewership. The MavTV 500 ratings were up because there was no NASCAR on during the Indycar race.

They gave both as an option, so Phoenix would be part of plan A.
 
I hope the Phoenix race is back on the calendar. They can make Milwaukee and Road America work as well... they just need to make sure they aren't scheduled too close together.
 
I wish they came to São Paulo again, either at Interlagos (not happening because of the stupid exlusivity formula rule of FIA) or at the street circuit of a few years back (which is 3 miles away home from my apartment, or a 40 minute walk which of course I did in 2013 when I went there haha)
