The circuit looks better when seen at speed; I like that long double-apex right around the pit exit (the back half of the circuit is easily the best), but it's still not much of an improvement.

I'm really not liking the direction the series is going right now. On top of all the idiotic calls made by race control the 2012 car is looking huge(literally).

I still don't get why it still has an air box and in my book isn't a true open wheel car as the back wheels are basically completely enclosed.

Hopefully it looks better with some team liveries on it or something.

That rear wing is looking very over-sized ...

I agree with some of your points, but I thikn we should all wait until 2013, when the first aero kits will be made available.

More advertising space for sponsors! Clearly that's why the car's so huge.

I wouldn't be at all shocked if that was the primary reason, to be honest - imagine that some of the major sponsors in the series approached Dallara/series management and said "we want you to make the car massive from now on, mmkay?" etc. Not terribly hard to picture is it?

/tinfoil hat

It is a concept though, isn't it? And covering the back of the rear wheels could be for safety reasons, like what happened to Michael Shumacher at last weekends Singapore GP, his front wheel hit another guy's back wheel and made him do a wheelie and hit the wall. That on a Speedway wouldn't be that good :scared: and it could still hurt the guy in the rear of the car's tires

It's clumsy looking, but it could be worse. it could have been the Deltawing :yuck:

The idea of having competition among engine and aero manufacturers has me interested in the series for the first time since the IRL/CART Split. But now it seems they are going about some of these changes half assed, so we'll see where it ends up. The jury is still out for me.

We hope. The team owners shot it down, and who's to say they won't shoot it down again, since they already will have invested in the Dallara package for the 2012 campaign. And with Dallara getting a year ahead from a development perspective, it doesn't necessarily bode well for other aero manufacturers.

And about the car being so big. One nice thing is that it's actually going to be a lighter car than the current spec. The road course Power/Weight ratio will actually be much closer to F1 than it is currently.

I guess they have to make their product stand out to the 10 fans as much as they can.

I'm guessing you are right that it is for safety reasons. It just seems kind of stupid to basically have the wheels completely closed in an open wheel series.

I feel the same way, hopefully they can pull it together as the series has all the parts to make a great series, they just can't seem to get all the pieces together.

I hope Chevrolet and Honda at least come out with their own packages. I really don't see any teams developing their own as it would cost a good chunk of cash that most teams don't seem to have right now.

That is good news, will have to wait and see if it amounts to better racing though.

I think first year all the teams will have the same chassis and they can all have different ones the year after I heard I think

That is supposedly how it will work, I don't see any teams having different aero kits though in '13 unless Chevrolet or Honda decide to develop one. It's just too costly and the only team with any experience with designing anything is Penske and it's been a good amount of time since they ran their own chassis.

At one point, Boeing was also being thrown around as a potential aero manufacturer. Aside from the cost issue, I think the development curve might be the other part that throws a wrench into the works. I think the owners know what they are doing on this one, they've decided they would rather have a spec chassis and have created a situation that almost guarantees it. We shall see.............

Glad its not just me who feels the 2012 car takes a bit of the "open wheel" out of open wheel racing. Still the greatest form of racing on earth. Flying into Vegas tomorrow for the race. See you there!!!!

Jealousy is not a strong enough word :p have fun in Vegas, it looks like it's gonna be a good finish 👍

Should be great. I live in SoCal, so we do Long Beach every year, plus every other year we trek to Indy. I hear the vegas track has good visibility. Can't wait.
Did I hear correct that Belle Isle is on the schedule for next year?

Indycar is getting a new team in 2012, with Grand-Am team Michael Shank Racing being accepted. MSR Indy will run an ICONIC chassis with Lotus engine. I'm also hearing that ALMS teams Dyson Racing and Highcroft Racing are trying to put together sponsor packages to join the grid.

Yes, you did hear correctly. Belle Isle is in for 2012.

I heard Loudon, New Hampshire might not be returning to the Indy schedule next year unless they can get a sponsor :(

It's already been confirmed that races at Motegi, the Milwaukee Mile, New Hampshire and Kentucky Speedway will be discontinued in 2012.

Urgh, first race I watch this year after they stopped showing the free stream on the official website last year and this happens.

I hope Dan Wheldon is ok. :nervous:

I think Dan Wheldon got the worst of it. Hopefully he is ok.

Yellow tarp over the car.. I don't think Dan Wheldon is ok.
