Built for excitement

The largest and quite possibly most cosmopolitan city in South America, São Paulo, Brazil, transmits a non-stop beat that engages the senses.

Its 11 million-plus citizens (almost 20 million in the metro area) work hard and play hard, and on March 14 tens of thousands undoubtedly will turn out to watch the stars of the IZOD IndyCar Series contest a race on its city streets for the first time.

The 2.6-mile, 11-turn circuit mirrors the metropolis - built for speed and excitement. A portion of the course in the Anhembi (north-central) section of São Paulo incorporates the Sambodromo - permanent grandstands lining the route primarily used for the colorful parades during Carnival - that will include the start/finish line and form one of the three long straights.

The backstretch is nine-tenths of a mile, leading into a sharp right-hand turn into the Sambodromo. Seventy-five laps will constitute the São Paulo Indy 300.

"Two of the long straightaways have relatively slow corners leading onto them," said Tony Cotman, who designed the course and is overseeing its construction through his new company, NZR Consulting. "There are some good 90-degree turns at the end of the straights, and on one occasion a little tighter than that.

"It's a track that's challenging but can create some exciting racing and will provide a challenge for the teams deciding on their downforce levels for both qualifying and the race. Less downforce generally means less grip. Combine that with the longest straightaway of any track in the IZOD IndyCar Series and overtaking should be exciting. It should be a spectacular sight for the fans at Turn 11 watching the cars braking from about 185 mph to 50 mph as they enter the Sambodromo.

"Running through the middle of the stadium that hosts Carnival, which holds about 30,000 people, I think will be an electric atmosphere for the drivers. That portion of the track through the stadium is concrete and everywhere else will be asphalt, so there will be some surface changes. That's always good for the racing. From the grandstand perspective, how could you have run around it or not use it?"

The design has received positive response from Team Penske's Helio Castroneves, a native of the state of São Paulo who plans to tour the site this week.

"With long straightaways, it's certainly going to be fast and you definitely will have challenges," he said after reviewing the circuit map. "No question it will be a good race and the people are so excited to have Formula Indy come to Brazil."

Representatives of the state and city of São Paulo and event promotional partner Bandeirantes (Brazilian TV network) echoed those comments during a presentation at the Indy Racing League season preview meeting earlier this month.

"Brazilians love motor racing and most Brazilians know the names of the drivers - not only the five Brazilian drivers in the (IZOD IndyCar Series) - but all of them, the cars they drive and even the owners of the teams," said Milton Longobardi, director of marketing for the São Paulo Tourism board. "This is really exciting for the people of São Paulo; they're waiting for the race and very proud to host the opening of the 2010 season."

The event will be the first for the IZOD IndyCar Series in South America. Cotman and dedicated groups of workers from multiple trades and city departments are currently constructing the circuit in four sections based on events in the area and not hindering the flow of traffic (there are more than 7 million vehicles in the city). A convention center and major hotel inside the circuit will be utilized by teams, IZOD IndyCar Series officials and event promoters.

"Everybody we're working with is incredibly motivated to showcase the event," Cotman said. "I'm sure there will be some fine-tuning in the future, but to be perfectly honest it's no different than going to any of the temporary circuits where we currently race. It will be fast. It will be fun. It will be exciting. It will be safe. Most importantly, from a fan's perspective, they'll see a lot of action."

It looks like a pretty good course with 2 good passing zones in Turns 5 and 11.

Looks brill, although, after seeing the track surface, gonna be very rough and very abrasive

Brazil is indeed a terrible track. Looks like Polyphony Digital designed it.

True, most cities have 90 degree corners, but that never stopped great street courses like Monaco, Toronto, Long Beach etc turning up that have more then 90 degree corners and chicanes.

I really wish they ran the race at the Interalogos track instead.

Versus and DirecTV are still fighting. Looks like no Indycar racing for 18 million DirecTV subscribers (which includes me) until they settle their differences.

Also, Daytona has a higher catch fence now. They just need to smooth out the track and it will be ready for Indycars.

I don't pay attention to anything IRL-related until the series starts, but is IZOD IndyCar Series the new name for it? And if so, the heck is IZOD?

It's a clothing brand.

But the IRL has always had weird sponsors, I remember the search engine northernlights sponsored it for a while

Indy @ Daytona?

Insert Homer Simpson style hmmm in here

In a private test at Indy a few years ago, didn't Mario Andretti manage to get somewhere between 70 and 90 feet into the air?

Indy has been lapped at 240 and Talladega at 250. The potential for a 1955 LeMans style accident (80+ killed) is present at all of these venues.

I'm hoping they're gonna run the road course like they did in '06 or '07 when they had an open test there.

I just heard some news about Vision Racing, desperately in need of sonsporship and might not make the grid this season.

Just gets worse for Tony George(!)

I don't even think he cares anymore.

Can't say I really blame him though after the way his own family kind of screwed him over.

I thought it had already been announced last week that he was closing the team?

Hmm, Penske's in the top four? They are going to be awesome this year.

Unusual for the TCG cars to be that far off the pace around a road course.

But for those of you who are listen, I am about to eat humble pie and say well done to Takuma Sato. Only found out he had a drive a week ago and faster than some of the more experienced drivers.

As for my girl, needs to get her head out of the NASCAR clouds and start pedalling!

If anyone is interested in it as well, here is the virtual lap of the circuit

Starting to rain, should make it a little more interesting.

Edit: Horrible start.

Just watching the coverage now and it looks like a typical South American circuit ie dusty & bumpy. It's not a slight on that regions tracks but it does lead to what happened at turn one thanks to Sato doing what he does best

I'm sorry, could you repeat that one? Surely that is a misprint?
Only too happy to oblige. 8 seconds off in practice 1 at St. Pete.

Fun fact: James Hinchliffe's pole time in Indy Lights was 2.3 seconds quicker than Milka's Indycar qualifying time; Duno's Indycar lap of 1m08.5 would have put her 15th on the grid for the Indy Lights race. You read that right, she was slower in her Indycar than all but one driver in the Indy Lights (one guy failed to set a time, 15th ran a 1m08.8).
