Not really a spec tire so much as its what all the big manufacterers are using. Its open tire as part of the insistence that GTLM remains more or less untouched.
 
After tonight the forecast looks great.

Friday
Sunny, with a high near 64. West northwest wind 10 to 15 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph.
Friday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 43. West southwest wind around 5 mph becoming calm in the evening.
Saturday
Sunny, with a high near 68. Calm wind becoming east around 5 mph in the afternoon.
Saturday Night
Mostly clear, with a low around 48. Calm wind becoming south southeast around 5 mph after midnight.
Sunday
Mostly sunny, with a high near 73. Southeast wind around 5 mph.

Rene Rast currently 7 sec per lap faster than the next fastest GTD car.

You'd hope for how trumped up F1 is still, that the F1 driver in GTD would be the ringer instead. If your one of those F1 fans that gets a bruised ego that is.

I don't know, I currently can't even see his name on IMSA scoring, I just see A. Perez and R. Perez under the 007 car.

Nevermind I solved this, looks like Sergio Perez is a financial backer and not a driver as first claimed and currently listed on IMSA (thanks for that IMSA). His partnering allows for Carlos Slim money to flow through for the team. So there you have it.
 
James Davison is now in the 007 car for the race. He last drove that car last year at Detroit and hit the fireman during the yellow fiasco at the end of the race.

On a brighter note, he also scored 4 poles in a row in 2014, so he's bloody fast.
 
Looking at this, IMSA is sure still having trouble balancing the cars.

Sure the rain is a massive factor in all of this but this really shouldn't even happen during rain :lol:.

Though this is fun to look at :P.

Two words: Crappy Contis.

I guarantee in the dry, it won't be anything like this.
 
What's sad about all this is that Continental tires for road cars the DWs are supposedly quite good in the wet against the other top performing tires (PZero, F1, Cups). Yet they are trash when they build race wets.

That's what happens when a series uses spec tires. Continental has no motivation to make a better product, because they aren't competing with anyone else.

Well that's the difference between them and Pirelli, when you get to have no tire war you either just do the bare minimum and ignore what unhappy people say (conti), or you keep trying to build with in a mold even if it isn't good all the time (Pirelli). I feel Pirelli are trying to be better as where Conti just don't care sort of like Goodyear with NASCAR at times.

***Change suffered a tough Thursday, when Spencer Pumpelly reportedly had something break on the left front and lost control of his No. 16 car exiting Daytona’s oval Turn 4 in first practice. He was evaluated and released from the infield care center, but the Robby Benton-led crew continued repairs through qualifying.

*Mazda Motorsports director John Doonan confirmed its U.S.-based P2 program is evaluating a trek to Le Mans, as early as 2017, to compete in the legendary 24-hour race. With new, global-spec P2s set for introduction next year, Mazda's 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine would be legal at Le Mans, but the chassis carrying the engine would not be permitted to carry the custom bodywork allowed in IMSA.

Continued speculation regarding a possible tie-up with the Visit Florida Racing team has been persistent. The Corvette DP team, which came close to winning IMSA's Prototype championship in 2015, has been active in pursuing chassis/engine solutions for 2017, and with Mazda rumored to be considering an expansion to the two-car factory program led by SpeedSource, VFR could be one of few championship-contending outfits available to field cars next season.

The supposed lack of Le Mans interest by U.S. prototype teams is turning into a myth with 3 teams either going or planning to race in France by 2017. The only unknowns now are the teams with factory GM ties, AXR and WTR and whatever Panoz is doing.
 
If anyone watched live on imsa.com, you would see the rain progressively got worse (as did the track). GTD had the best conditions. Toward the end of PC qualifying, it really started pouring. Prototype had no chance, especially with those "sports hard" tires ;) Ford probably don't care for their starting position, but the race will be dry anyway.

My dream: 2 factory backed RX-Vision's racing at LeMans in the next 4-5 years. Forget the prototypes.
