Read this for complicated detail, then this for overall synopsis.

[...] I predict Google will be the biggest and most important company in the world in 5-8 years.

I hate the new look. I've hated it since I saw a screenshot of it about two weeks ago.

But now I forget what it looked like before, haha.

Why? may I ask. Why are they trying to jump in a race that has been running for over a decade? It's going to be pretty tough for them to start off as a competitor for Microsoft or even Macintosh. Heck, I doubt they have the showing that Linux has within two years.

But that's not entirely the point... the main point is that Google basically has the entire web in its hands (well, several copies of the web, anyway), it knows what people want, it knows what people shop for, and soon it'll know what people are talking about. It has major, major potential, because on Google's 100,000 servers are information about how almost everybody uses the web. They've basically created on Operating System (and an uncrashable computer) that knows the web better than any desktop OS.

Combine that with the fact that they have some of the smartest people in the world on their team, and you've got one huge, mega powerhouse in Mountain View. I wanted to bring these articles up, because they're foreshadowing what most people would never imagine.

Oh, I guess I should read the article.

I'd be very interested in seeing a Google operating system. Maybe it would inspire Microsoft to build a better operating system. Nah, Windows will still be installed on all new computers regardless of how crappy it is.

Uh, I dont think sage is talking about a Google OS at all. Instead, he is pointing out that Google, with its intellectual power and physical resources and insight, has a great enough "product" (in terms of the information they can serve, at he speeds that they can serve it) that they will become "big" in the next few years. Remember, IBM is looked at in the same light as Microsoft and Sun, but they do not do operating systems (well, barely). They do data management. And Google has its own set of services to offer.

Excellent article, Sage. I'm bookmarking it so I can read that blog when I have the time.

Thank you!! Someone who gets it!

Google is seen by most people these days as only a search engine, and so a relatively insignificant part of life. However, there is the potential for Google to grow bigger than anybody could possibly imagine, because of what they have and how effectively they use it. This is a company to watch for, fellows.

I get it. I was just commenting solely on the operating system aspect.

I think it was clever of them to anounce Gmail on April 1st.

Soon it will take over Hotmail, with GMail. I don't like the new look, but it's probably better in a way.

But what their building is "interesting". It's like the old day's mainframe setup, only they're doing it with a cluster. Makes sense to me. Sign me up! (:

I didn't look at it that way. WAY TO STICK UP FOR A GREAT POINT BEHIND THE STORY! That was truly amazingly well done. Honestly, I was surprised that Google had such potential behind it, because I don't use it, and neither do many of my friends. (No offense, of course).

Nice post! 👍
