i got the game for christmas and on the whole i love it. it has many downfalls, as you all know, but the worst factor has to be the screen tearing.

On every track with any amount of cars, you can't go three seconds without there being one!

Please PD please! fix this and don't allow your brilliant game to be ruined by it, because its ruining it for me. :yuck:

ok, moan over

I have had it since it's release and I have no clue what a sceen tear is. I guess ignorance is bliss? What exactly does it look like?

^^ its when part of the screen shows one frame and another part of the screen shows another frame which is different.

this causes a noticeable 'tear' across the screen and it is really distracting.

i think it can only go horizontally.

also, not everyone can see them. i don't have perfect vision but i do not need glasses or any thing like that and i can see them clear as day!

hope that explains it

I've seen a lot of screen tearing, but mostly only in cockpit view. Hardly ever get it in a standard car due to no cockpit.

Lol its prety funny how some people are extremley bothered by it, whilst others dont even notice it at all.

And jtsnooks, I dont know whats going in in your end but it it happens in any view... Actually in cockpit view I find it is the least apparrent.

You change it in the PS3 system stettings display settings. Just untick 1080p.

Before my PS3 was repaired I saw a lot of screen tearing.
Since it was reconditioned I think I've only noticed screen tear once.

Maybe this is a sign your graphics card is failing?? Back up your data dude

Screen tearing is only obvious in sharp turns, when the car quckly changes direction. But most of the time on straights it's not very noticable. Not a game killer for me, but it would be great if they'd fix it.

PC solves this issue with v-sync option.

Imagine a GT with vsync, 16x AA, 16x AF, 1080p @ 60fps  If only...

Screen tearing can be also toned down by TVs with 100Hz or more option. It will add some blue shimmering to moving objects but reduce tearing a little and everything feels a little bit smoother aswell. But it has got nothing to do with more fps performance or improved PS3 power. It's just a 'post processing' effect from the TV.

No thanks. V-Sync is awful. It adds latency and that is not something you want, esp. in a racing game. They would have to add Triple Buffering if anything, but that's very expensive.

Screen Tearing: The only time I really notice it is when you are behind another car. It doesn't bother me that much, though.

I personally think that the screen tearing must look worse on some t.v's and not as bad on others. It is visible on mine but its not as bad as some are making out also iv seen a lot worse in other games. Its not the game imo.

The game is not able to keep 60 frames per seconds -> screen tearing -> therefore it's the game.

Then I don't recall seeing it. I have had the screen do some crazy things, usually when online racing so I figure it has to do with the connection more than anything and it doesnt happen very often, usually it seems like it freezes for a split second. But that's about it. I guess sometimes it is a benifit not being sensitive to certain things. Although I may regret asking because I will probably start noticing it now.

I get some framerate chop when in cockpit view. I wish they would add a vsync option to address the tearing when the framerate drops.

Agreed, the game actually runs in 720p and upconverts to 1080P when you use that mode. This article explains it:
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-gran-turismo-5-tech-analysis

Where does digital foundry say that GT5 upscales from 720p to 1080p?
The game runs in three available resolution modes:

1280x720 with 4xMSAA
1280x1080 with 2QAA (width gets upscaled)
1280x720 in 3D with 2QAA

The 1080p mode is not based on the 720p mode, and this means, it is not upscaled from 720p. The native resolution is 1280x1080.
Upscaling from 720p to full 1080p would result in even less image quality then running in 720p! But using native 1280x1080 still ends up in better image quality, even with the blurry QAA. In fact, it's 50% more pixels, not upscaled but real pixels.
Also, all menus and the real time backgrounds are running at full 1080p.

Unfortunately vsync will take a toll on framerate as it forces the system not to draw the frame until the whole frame is done. Tearing is just the result of drawing a frame before it's completely done.

I am sure PD left vsync off on purpose to eak every last frame out they could as GT5 already falls far from 60FPS on a regular basis.

And it also adds input latency which is something you definitely don't want, especially in a racing game.

I've noticed this quite a bit but it hasn't exactly bothered me.

Can I just ask - if I change to 720p from 1080p will I notice a big difference in quality?
fwiw I play on a 42in LG full LED 100Hz TV (in case it matters).

Just did it myself. In my opinion, jaggies seem to be a little more pronounced, but not a lot. The whole image feels as if you would rise the sharpness level of your TV, with all it's negative side effects.
For me, the 1080p mode feels more clean and you can see the higher pixel fill rate. The blur effect is not so bad at all that comes with the QAA
And you should know that the menu and the real time backgrounds will suffer, because they run at full real 1080p.

I stay with 1080p

I initially didn't notice it... then I made the mistake of trying to find out what it was. Indeed, ignorance is bliss.

I don't know anything about game programming and whatnot, but is this tearing something they can fix via a patch or is it because they're pushing the limits of the PS3? Or something else?

They can fix it with v-sync which costs fps, maybe around 5 to 8 fps.
It's nothing else then a graphics setting or option, no mumbo jumbo.
V-sync and lag are no good friends.
Or try to rise fps to get out of the tearing timings, by reducing detail level, lod settings or higher compression methods. Then you would loose image quality.
Or, they tune the game engine to run faster and more efficient, to get more stable fps. The best but yet hardest way to resolve it. Also the most unlike scenario to happen.

I don´t have a clue... I can´t notice anything close to what you´re saying. I even went down to from 1080p to 720p a week ago so I don´t force my 32´ Bravia and my PS3 for a resolution that you can´t even tell the difference on a tv this size, and I still appreciate what wonderful graphics the game has. And for a strange reason that I don´t understand, I feel it looks smoother. Maybe its psycological or something...

... I guess ignorance is bliss?

This:tup:👍
I agree with him over here...

Very interesting, never ever had this problem before i played GT5 but since i play GT5 from release i have it all the time. Cleaned my HDMI cable and it got much better. Replaced the cable and problem is solved. No idea how this could be....
