I'd say accleration because with out good accleration then you car might not have good top speed.

I have to agree, to a point. In my GT-One I get pretty lousy low end acceleration and the pack runs off from me. But I quickly get it back, say in third gear, and run past them full steam and never look back. Maybe I need to tweak on my gears a little, but I don't think it would help much.
I think acceleration is the most important in GT3 because there are few stait aways long enough to max out a fast car anyway. Even SS 11 and Tokyo don't have long enough strait stretches for me to max out half my cars. I usually have to drive the Test Course the oposite direction so I have enough room to get up to max speed.
Acceleration comes in to play everytime you drop a gear for a corner and have to punch it to the floor to get back up to crusing speed. You use acceleration more than you use top speed is what I'm trying to say.

I voted for acceleration, but the issue really isn't all that black or white. Most tracks need good acceleration to make your way through the twisties...but if you have exceptionally poor top speed, you'll get your doors blown off.
The only tracks where top speed really takes precedence are Super Speedway and Test Course (natch).

Well I definetly think that acceleration is more important than top speed, because as mentioned most courses require acceleration after turns to get back up to a higher speed, and few courses will max out cars. Of course balance is essential, a car with a great quarter mile time that can't go over 150 mph is going to get blown away on all the courses with decent straightaways.

It has to be a delicate balance of the two. If you can go 200 MPH, but only have the room on the test track to get that high, what good is that in Cote D' Azure? If you can go 0-60 in 2.5 seconds, what is the difference if you car tops out at 130, and the pack averages 150 MPH on a lap?

If you can outaccelerate the opposition in the corners and block 'em on the straights, you can win on most tracks.

It's the Yin and Yang of racing. As everyone else stated, a fine balance of both ensures a victory.
I think gearing a car for the Max Top speed for the track is important. You don't want to be geared so low that your redlining half way down the fast straightaway, on the other hand, you don't want to be gears so wide that you can't accelerate out of corners.

Well it appears I'm the only one to vote for top speed!
You need power for the top end, and you cajole acceleration by dropping all the weight out of the car. It doesn't matter if all the 4wds beat you out of the hairpins, because there's not that many corners that are really tight, and most of them are at the ends of long straights. So I use the top speed to breeze by half the field, then outbrake (with my light car ) the rest into the corners. Then block on the exit until the engine's spooled up again.

Eh, I don't think it matters. You need a balance of both (as has been stated many times before

Acceleration. No question. WHat's the good of going fast if it takes you 1 min. to get there? By the time you're going fast, its time for the next turn.
