Hi everyone, this is going to be a two part post, second part will be added after a few responses. (sorry if it's been done before, but i'm at my wits end and ready for launching my game out of the window)
I'd like to know (especially from the quality drivers) what aids you have turned on/use while RACING, not free run but on race day itself:)

EDIT and for wheel users what settings do you use for Active Steering not the asm

The only aids useful for racing are TCS and ABS. I use ABS quite a lot, just because barely anyone online turns it off and its a huge disadvantage turning it off (though it is a lot more fun).
I use TCS when needed, only a handful of cars really need it, and only for certain situations such as launch control and coming out of hairpins.

ASM takes too much away to be of any use at all.

To answer your new thread title, only really Active Stability Management really detriments racing ability, as it detriments your driving in general and takes too much away from you, you never get a proper feel for the car with it on.
TCS also slows you down, but it depends on your skill and if you're using a pad or a wheel. Generally, most people with pads will prefer to use TCS for the more powerful or twitchy cars because its fairly difficult to modulate the throttle using the buttons or the sticks. I personally use the pad and I'm fine modulating the throttle with the buttons though I can never be as good as someone with pedals, so I sometimes use TCS to gain a better acceleration out of corners.
So, TCS isn't detrimental to racing, its probably quite helpful, seeing as you are usually not driving a good line around corners and sometimes cannot get the traction as easily (with pads, anyway).

Although i havent tried it yet on gt, with forza, abs off was much faster and with the 360's triggers, i found it was pretty easy to modulate the brakes

ABS @ 1, everything else off. G25 with the clutch, feedback on 8, no power steering or active steering.
 
not that I'd rank myself quite in the quality drivers (i'd like to think i'm getting there tho) but I have ABS on 1 most often, everything else off. I have active steering off too, and everything else that can be turned off, off.
I have a G25 but use paddles not clutch, as my cockpit set restricts movement of my knees under the wheel, so can't heel/toe. Not that I can heel/toe anyway.. i certainly don't in real world driving... but would have liked to learn the skill. Probably don't need to heel/toe in the game, but I'm a left foot braker, and i can't seem to be able to use all three pedals in a race environment, and retain any sort of pace.
 
Everything off, For me, I use ABS off for the TUNED cars. I just feel way more comfortable. When I turn off ABS, I usually go to 4-2 or 3-2 Brake BIAS. With ABS off you can have Maximum braking right before Locking up. ABS takes bit longer.

I will sometimes turn TCS up to 2 for launch in a standing start, then dial it back to 0 by turn 1 and leave it off for the rest of the race.

I love that you can change settings on the go!

When you start a race, I usually Get my brake bias at 3-2 for the first Lap, after that when Tires heat up, I can go to 4-2 or even 5-3 with minimal tire lock


By the way, TURN off the ACTIVE steering. It really throws you off, slows down times.
 
It tries to help you out to recover when you're car slips.. aka wasting you're time laps.
 
see i drive with Active Steering on strong, abs 1 and TC dependant on the car, i know lacking in ability means i can never get to be in with the fastest of the fast but usually can compete with top half of the race........now i figured turning Active Steering fromstrong to off would help my times....BUT even the slightest touch from another car sends me off and spinning (1440 deg. up to now is my best spin) and if a car looses it in front of me, seems their draft disrupts my car and it goes off at a 90 deg. angle with me holding a steering wheel which cannot do anything till the car comes to a halt usually against a barrier...this is whats naffing me off to the point of dumping the game in the bin, so i'm trying to figure out why it does this before i bin the game
 
You have a Wheel or pad?
I have my settings off, Sometimes another car touches me, I still am able to counter steer and not get spin out. I do not get that frustrated when someone bumps into me. In racing all it takes is a small bump to send another driver spinning out. What you ganna do ;)
Just wait till Private racing.

is that in all cars you drive. ? I do get the lost downforce when following another car when I'm in the GTLM , especially at the long sweeping right before spoon. I have some of it dialled out, i think its just a matter of getting the tuning right.
 
with the active steering on etc, i don't seem to have a problem, with it off thats when i have major problems, not just the occasionl twitch but a big loss of control

mate,after reading your problems,it seems to me that you are pushing too hard...
what i meen is you have to try to "feel" what the car is doing instead of pushing it to what you want it to do....

i know this sounds strange,but i have helped several guys here who had a simular -loosing controll- experience while turning all aids off...
they are usually squeesing the wheel with their hands in such a way they loose feeling in their hands all together!!...you have to try to be relaxed,and go with the flow...not muscle you way thru the corners,if you catch my drift....:)

most guys get better if they practice timetrails a lot...there is than nothing to loose your concentration there you know...practice and try to "become one" with the phisics of the game...it takes a while for everybody to get really comfy in their racing seat....if you manage this,you will love the game,and never ever think about throwing it away again........👍👍👍

ABS is set to 1. Traction control and active stability management are turned off.

My Driving Force Pro wheel settings are as follows:

Steering Type - Professional
Power-Assisted Steering - Off
Feedback Strength - 10
 
DFGT Pro mode, FF at 8, ABS 1, no other aids.

I can't feel wheel lockup well enough sitting in my livingroom to shut the ABS off, not enough pedal feel. ASM is a definite time-loser.

I tend to hold the wheel in a death grip, but simply cannot focus on my grip strength while racing or running TT's. I'd love to hold it more gingerly because I have tendinitis in my left elbow (mostly caused by my work) and using the wheel certainly isn't helping. I've considered taping three fingers of both hands together so they can't grip the wheel, but it seems a little silly to be sitting there trying to drive with your fingers sticking straight out. Looks like I'll just have to suffer!
 
I first raced with the aids on using Standard physics. Now I've turned them all off, except ABS set to 1. I felt that TCS & ASM limited the cars' maneuverability too much. Once I got the Nissan GTR I had had enough and it made me turn them off. Although I still race with Standard Physics.
 
I started off with Professional Physics and got used to them. So as I used Standard wow it gripped like glue.

I use all aids off and ABS at 1 or 2.
 
Maybe a bit noobish, but I'm confused with steering help? and active steering. Steering help is the thing you set at the beginning of a race along with gear type(auto/manual), realism, ideal line, tc, asm, tyre type am I right? And active steering is something you set at the wheel options along with FF right? Or are they both the same:dunce:

i used to race with ABS off. i have since dialed it to 1, after realizing no one races without it online.
 
Aids off and ABS 1 for the same 'lack of feel' reasons that have been stated. Shame too, cos if it could force feedback through the pedals it would be awesome.

On another note - do never use TCS on a powerful MR car. It will cause you to understeer like a pig on corner exits at best and, at worse, send you into oversteer of doom on fast corners. Cutting the throttle just because the back wheels are losing a bit of meaningless traction is a recipe for disaster in a GT or Elise. If you set the car up to compensate you will neuter the poor thing.

Also ASM seems to slow down any car it's applied to. Beginning to wonder if it stands for Applied Slow Motion.
 
Understeer = drifting towards the outside of the corner and missing the apex (bit in the middle)

Oversteer = suddenly facing the wrong direction and lots of tyre smoke. :sly:
