Trump didn't need to federalize the national guard and send them in, the gestapo were already on site.

For clarification there is a longer clip now that shows the protestor is not an innocent party, but still don’t think that excuses being trampled by a horse whilst on the ground.

I mean, we've known this for years with the LAPD. In the 1920's, Louis Oaks was the Cheif of Police for the LAPD and he was a member of the KKK. James Davis, who took over after Oaks, formed a Red Squad to beat down labor unions. In 1936, the LAPD was sent to keep "okies" from getting to LA. Throughout the 30's, 40's, and 50's the LAPD cracked down hard on Mexicans due to the Sleepy Lagoon Murders and it eventually lead to the Zoot Suit Riots. In the early 50s, the LAPD had Bloody Christmas, where officers beat the hell out of people in custody. In 1962 they killed Ronald Stokes.

I think it really got bad in the 70's, 80's, and 90's. In 79 they shot Eula Love, in 82 they killed James Mincey Jr. In the late 80s they had Operation Hammer where they badly abused their power by raiding everything in sight because of drugs and found practically nothing while destorying millions of dollars worth of stuff.

Probably the most well-known, though, is the beating of Rodney King, which kicked off a series of events that eventually led to the 1992 riots.

It'll be interesting to see the cultural change from all of this. Lowriders and the Chicanos movement as a whole have their roots in the Mexican-American violence that was, in part, caused by the LAPD and surrounding agencies. West Coast hip-hop exploded in the 80s due to the violence against blacks. It wouldn't surprise me if these protests continue we get a new group like NWA.

I enjoy how CNN is reporting this as an Australian reporter being "hit" by a rubber bullet. Hit implies it may have been an accident, may have been a bullet fired from distance that missed its original target, may have been a ricochet.

Despite hosting a wider shot than the one above, CNN does not make it clear that you see an officer raise his gun, aim at the reporter and shoot her without provocation.

One is an accident, the other is pure violence for the sake of it.

The reporter in question works for the right wing Channel 9 network, which in turn owns the Sydney Morning Herald. The Herald reported that she was "caught in the crossfire", as though the demonstrators and officers were firing bullets at each other.
 
Here in British Columbia, Canada, we have the Medical Services Plan (MSP), it is a plan that we pay for through taxes. As summarized by some funky AI...

"The BC Medical Services Plan (MSP) covers medically necessary services provided by physicians and surgeons, including dental and oral surgery performed in a hospital, and certain diagnostic services. It also covers maternity care, including prenatal, delivery, and postnatal care. Additionally, MSP provides benefits for medically required eye examinations and some orthodontic services."

In 2016 I opted to have a vasectomy, a surgery that didn't cost me a cent as it was covered by MSP.

I bring this up because, while MSP isn't as extensive as something like the British NHS, it seems to be a lot more beneficial than what the US had pre-February 2025 and will likely be substantially better than what the US has once RFK Jr is done destroying the US health care system.

California Governor Newsom has escalated to calling the deployment of Marines and National Guard as fulfilling "the deranged fantasy of a dictatorial president".

Sounds about right. Meanwhile US Attorney General Pam Bondi has declared that a protester by the name of Elpidio Reyna will be added to America's Most Wanted list for throwing rocks at federal agents. I think it's fair to say that it's not the rock throwing that has poor Elpidio being added to the Most Wanted list though...

Hey! Fun fact - Elpidio is a name derived from ancient Greece and is primarily found in countries that speak Italian and Spanish!

In other thoughts - is the USA still a super-power? I was thinking about how the global super-powers are built over generations, how leader after leader all move to make their respective countries more powerful, more stable, more financially strong. During the rise they can become a global super-power, and continue to increase their position, but what happens when the country begins to spiral out of control, when there is unrest in the populace, when the country is fractured and internal political parties can't agree on anything, when the other global leaders ignore and mock their leader? Are they still a super-power when in decline, when moving away from the peak and spiralling down?

It'd be like saying the latest Bugatti is the fastest car in the world, only as soon as it hits it's top speed it loses stability and crashes. Yes it is a car that can hit that top speed, but if it crashes it becomes a hulking mass travelling at a high speed, is it still a car at that point?

Righties on Twitter are quoting JFK's executive order federalising Alabama NG troops to protect two Black students who Governor George Wallace was barring from entering a desegregated school as some kind of precedent for this. Never mind that Kennedy was acting to preserve rights, not remove and run roughshod over them like Trump.

I guess they must see Wallace's abject racism and authoritarian fascism as representative of their own people.

I don't advocate for violence and would never do so on this website. But I do advocate for States' rights as it is in the Constitution, and therefore on this American website I can say that I strongly believe California and any authorities that California's Governor can muster should defend their state's rights and their people (a different constitutional term from citizen) from the Federal government at all costs.

Let's hope we're not on the brink of civil war but at this point it wouldn't surprise me.

I’ve never been to LA, but I’m not sure people in the ‘hood that do have guns will be onboard for a civil war. If it starts creeping into good ‘ol boys territory then yeah, probably. However, it’s more likely for “good samaritans” to lend their harms to make sure it doesn’t creep outside of the Skid Row.
