Wow, it's already half over this year and no thread in sight. I admit, I watch it religiously, but I never used to. This year has been really good. Anyone want to discuss, maybe pick a favourite?

My Top 6 finalist picks are:

Katharine McPhee
Mandisa
Paris Bennett
Lisa Tucker
Elliott Yamin
Ace Young

And I think the winner will be Katharine McPhee.

Anyone else?

I've been watching it this year thanks to my girlfriend. Couple of hotties, so that makes it alright, but whats with Simon just sitting there dissing everyone while the other two give standing O's? Its like they're looking for more ratings, so they're having Simon unleash more mean.

Really? I personally watch the show primarily becuase of Simon and his scathing criticism. I find Paula is equally as annoying in that she can never say anything bad about anyone, especially at this stage. Paula and Simon are each there to balance the other out...

I don't watch this show, but my wife does. She loves Katharine McPhee, so, so do I. Plus, she looks like a young Valerie Bertinelli. 👍

No no, he's the second-best guy in my opinion, after Elliott. I really liked him at the audition stage, but his obsession with Joe Cocker started to be a little much. He's still a great singer though.

I'm not saying I don't enjoy the odd diss, but sometimes they can kind of get kinda old, and i've noticed he's started saying complete jibberish, like "that sounded like a eskimo beating a whoopie cushion with a drunk chihuahua". Of course, he never said that, but it was something way out there like that, I just can't remember it right now.

Has Simon really gotten so desperate to diss everyone thats he's started making up situations where odd sounds would be created just to compare whoever is singing? I do agree with you about the Paula thing though. After she gave a standing O to someone that I thought stank, and sang too far off key, i've started to wonder about her too. Its almost like they could come out there and hum the national anthem into a cats sphyncter and she'd be jumping up and down clapping.

I'll give it a couple more shows, hopefully it gets better, but if not, I think our "quality time" will be turned into me watching tv in the next room.

It's almost over...only about 6 more episodes tops I think!

Good, cause after tonight i've come to the conclusion that AI5 is slowly killing my brain cells, especially 3 nights in a row of it.:dunce:

No doubt. Especially when its filled with nothing but some what alright singers singing songs I didn't like when they were sung by the original artists!
Its like a karaoke party gone bad or something.

Too bad, the following four contestants were booted off tonight:

Becky O'Donohue
Bobby Bennett
Patrick Hall
Stevie Scott

Not sad to see any of them go except for Bobby. He was one of my favourites and in my opinion the most likable of the top 24...

I love the guy, but you're right, he's really got to tune it down a little. He's a bit over-the-top, but he's got some charm and good emotional impact. Don't think he'll win... which is why I'm rooting for him.

Stevie Scott just killed herself with that number the other day. I was sure she would be booted. Becky? Weak, but I didn't expect her to be out... Brenna's pathetic number was kind of worse... but people like her, so it shouldn't be much of a surprise.

Don't know if Patrick or Bobby deserved the boot. Bobby's singing was execrable, but he pulled it off with panache... Patrick was just okay... thought Kevin was a shoo-in for the boot... but he's so sickeningly cute, his survival shouldn't be a surprise either.

My top 6 picks:
Katharine McPhee *
Mandisa
Paris Bennett

Ace Young *
Chris Daughtry
Elliott Yamin

Dark Horses: (probably can't win but I like them anyway...)
Taylor Hicks
Melissa McGhee

So, who should get the boot next?

 you wish Brenna would get kicked out (I do, too...) but if they didn't do it for that last performance, what would it take?

The judges aren't the ones eliminating people anymore. It's all up to the votes each singer gets. Somehow, people somewhere like Brenna. I can't for the life of me figure out why.

Thats what I hate too. A lot of time its like it becomes a vote on who's better looking instead of whos the better singer.

I think it makes sense, as long as the voting process is not rigged (wouldn't that be a news story!). It shouldn't be the judges telling the public who the winner is; their job is to pick what they think are the best 24 singers, and present them to the American viewing audience to vote for their favourite. That's why it's not only about who sings the best, but who is the most likable and best-looking as well. What people are supposed to be looking for is a well-rounded complete star, not just an ugly face who can sing phenominally but just stands on the stage like a piece of furniture.

Yeah, your completely right in what you said, but i'm just giving my personal opinion on how feel the teenage girl audience is what runs the show and determines the winner. Use our own Canadian Idol for example, last year the last one voted out was "Sexy Rexy" or whoever, when I and the judges both felt he should have been gone long before many of the people voted off before him. Can artists and singers really make it off looks alone in todays culture? I think American Idol is proving just that.

But in the meantime, the pretty people who don't stand a chance in heck of winning bump off the performers who are actually interesting... :(

You're sure Kev could bump Bucky? Bucky seems to be doing pretty good, at least singing wise... and the voting put Kev in the bottom three last week.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

BTW: as this contest goes on, my opinion of the possible winning order has moved a little... I've got Elliot / Chris at the top, Ace / Taylor following and Bucky / Gideon coming up. Gideon seems to have the charisma to move up a few more places. Bucky may be just average, but he's got the fundamentals right.

Ace's exploring his limits, but exposing his shortcomings seems to be hurting his chances. Taylor's consistent, still don't know if he can win.

Elliot's biggest problem is song choice. Chris's chances will probably go down once they start having them sing in different styles.

I think Elliot has chosen perfect songs every week, and the judges seem to reflect that. Gideon smiles so much I don't think he has a central nervous system; and what was with that lame-ass painting of the world as a record crap? Nice concept, but the painting looked like it was done with crayon (literally). Ace sang Michael Jackson, and used his falsetto voice, and that should clinch his loss soon enough. We'll see him in the top 12, but there's no way he can compete with the girls.

Chris is excellent, but he only seemed to get better in the last two shows. Bucky is a goof, and so is Kevin, and these two will be eliminated at some point as well.

Well, it looks like Will and Gideon are gone. I'm surprised it was Gideon and not Bucky, but it was down to those two now wasn't it? I guess that makes my prediction 3/4 true for the guys...

For the girls, I was finding it tough to pick two losers from Tuesday, but I thought for sure Melissa McGhee would be gone. Kinnik was another girl who never stood out for me in any of the weeks. It was really sad to see Ala go. You forget how young these kids really are when you're watching at home through a camera lens. Think of how young 17 is to be dealing with all the stress of your normal teenage life and then also having to practice and deal with American Idol. She held herself together really well. Sad moment.

Oh, and Ryan Seacrest: Shut the hell up when you come on stage after the judges' comments. I don't care what you think about Simon and your "beef" with him grew old about three episodes ago. Shut your mouth and do your job buddy.

Of course, as if Seacrest ever comes into the Movies & TV forum when he comes to GTP...!)

Man, what's happening to me? Last night I was pissed off and tonight I love everyone on GTP. What....what's this salty discharge coming from my eyes?

Oh my God...I'm feeling!

 Damnit... I hate the time differential, who's the other girl who's out?

I actually like McGhee, though my wife says the other night wasn't particularly good.

It's sad to see Ala go, she's nowhere near the best, but she had potential.

I'm surprised it was Gideon, too... I was thinking Kev or Bucky and Will... (Damn you Kevin!!!!) but not Gideon. Admittedly, that painting crap probably sealed it (or was the ONLY reason  ) but he was a fun number.

Yup... the moment you sing Michael Jackson on the air, you deserve to go down in flames.

Elliot's other two songs were perfect. This one just didn't stand out for me. Not the best match for his voice or style... of course, delivery was perfect, as always.

Seacrest vs. Cowell... errh... Seacrest should just stick to plain hosting... that's his job, just be as transparent and un-noticeable as possible. But Cowell really should stop trying to dredge up silly criticisms and do his job, too. Most of the time, he's spot on, but you wish he'd substantiate his criticisms a little more.

I'm surprised Gideon didn't make it. I though Bucky or Kevin would be gone. Oh well. Most of the dead weight is trimmed now.

Well, Melissa McGhee is gone, and that's no surprise. I'm super-glad Ace Young was in the bottom 3, because he can't sing all that well and he's just a pretty face.

I was sad to see her go, but she's really not flexible enough for the comp.

Ace started out okay, but he just gets worse every episode... he's probably gone in the next two eps.

I'm surprised Kev was actually.... decent.
