Taylor Hicks can't even hold a note. His performance with "you are so beautiful" was atrocious, in my opinion. Everyone was totally riding his pipe on that show. All he's good at is yelling.

His career will be cut pretty short, no doubt.

Perhaps they should keep their origins a secret then... As I'm sure people are also simply going to vote for the "local" kid.

As for the them thing. I can see that the various styles thing is something to consider, but really, how many artist trancend styles any more? So in the end, why not have them sing what they're comfortable at singing. Eventualy, if they really don't have the pipes, they'll falter at some point...

@Omnis: I can't believe we were listening to the same thing... errh... does your TV have stereo? Or were you on your earphones...

Ah well, an opinion is an opinion... though he did cop out on one high "seeeee", he made up for it a few lines later... besides, gruff growly rock singers aren't expected to hold high notes like Whitney Houston or Jon Bon Jovi...

This'll be an interesting match-up... from what I'm seeing on this board, it's not a matter of who's better liked, as to who's more hated.

That might be the secret... if you can actually elicit such strong reactions from people, both negative and positive... the positives will actually vote for you, while the negatives don't matter until it's a 1:1 voting contest.

He's just no good when dealing with piano dynamics. He literally couldn't hold the note. Go back and watch it again if you have to.

Piano dynamics? You mean on songs with piano backing, or composed on piano? I have noted some atrocious ones from him in the past, but I didn't really think that performance was one of them... at the very least, he wasn't glaringly off-key like Kat was with her first two songs. Maybe I'll DL the episode on limewire when I get back to the office tomorrow (our home DSL has pooped out... again.)

It's a puzzlement... he does hit the right notes, but there are just some songs he can't sing. I still think he's got a better chance than Kat, but I don't doubt her ability to pull off a perfect song when she really tries. It will be an interesting final.

Lol, no. Vocal dynamics are measured in levels, usually anywhere from pp or ppp to ff or fff. P stand for piano, which means soft (the instrument Piano was named so because it was the first keyboard-instrument that could play soft sounds as well as loud.) and F stands for Forte, which means loud.
The scale is ppp - pianissimo (pp) - piano (p) - mezzopiano (mp) - mezzoforte (mf) - forte (f) - fortissimo (ff) - fff.
Taylor hicks sucks at p and lower, and sometimes can't even pull off a decent mp dynamic level.

Anyway, I have pretty much lost hope in America for their ability to recognize talent. My prediction is that everyone will become jaded with Taylor. I'm already there. I just wish there was a way to replace these butthole artists like britney spears and lindsay lohan and etc. with people like Paris and Katherine. I have no doubt in my mind that we'll see the likes of them in the future, and they will be great.

Oh, okay... while I still disagree with your pessimistic view of Mr. Hicks, I get what you mean.

Very interesting, and I can sort of see what you're getting at. But I think his flat range is probably between p and mp only... he seems to get through the really soft passages okay. But then again, I'm no music teacher, so I wouldn't know.

But then again, ranged against Katherine last night, whose first song was great (again) but who still went off key when she went into Harmony in the middle of the second song, and who suffered from a poor composition in the last... (seriously, who's the idiot who wrote that? He had her singing for minutes at a time in a register too low for her!)... he seemed a good bet.

His first song was pretty snappy, his second one sucked, his pitch was all over... heck, I thought it was kind of mushy the first time he sang it, too... but his last number was pretty good.

Poor Kat... I thought she did a terrific job on a song that really wasn't suited for her. Last night was one of the few times that I felt that she deserved a win. Haven't felt that since the last time, over a month ago... for three or four shows, I thought "she's the one."

As to whether America will see the likes of Kat and Paris in the future... Kat's already there, with a record contract already signed... despite my gripes with her live performances, I think she'll make a great recording artist.

Paris? She still needs a lot of polishing. She's another one who can't sing in p. :D ...lots of potential there, they've just got to teach her to stop oversinging everything.

I'm not bashing Taylor, I'm just saying that Kat is better than he.

I don't like Paris, but I like her better than the stupid pop stars all over MTV.

Actually, sometimes she is, sometimes she isn't. Much of whether she would win or lose last night really depended on her consistency. That's what I've kept harping about. I actually think Elliot's better than either, but he wasn't consistent either.

Like I said, I thought she did a good job last night, and she would have won if her "original" song was better. 👍

If we're comparing Paris to those cardboard-cut-out fake-nosed "I don't know how to lip-sync" types, yeah, she's great. She's a nice kid. Maybe in a few years she'll be a superstar, but not yet.

Yeah, that's exactly what I'm saying.

But, yeah, I'll stick by my belief that Kat is better than Taylor as an overall singer; versatile, pure, and with much more longevity than taylor's raspy screaming.
