What kind of engine tuning do you like the most?

  • Mechanical Tuning. High revs, wonderful sound.

  • Turbo. The 'Pssh' and boost kick after lag is addicting.

  • Supercharger. The benifits of turbocharging without the lag.

Not to cop out, but they each have their righteous place. Though there are two sounds that can't ever be beaten: A giant Merlin V-12 snarling in the nose of a P-51 as it sails down the flightline on a low pass, and the intake suck of a big naturally aspirated V-8 as it inhales just before the revs jump and the exhaust bark drowns it out.

No stupid blowoff sneeze can compete with that.

Turbos are quickly becoming my favorite form of instant horsepower. Just such an intelligent design and the best way to be efficient. Even more and more muscle cars are adapting the turbo and if I had the money I would too. 👍 👍
I have to admit a high horsepower car with a huge cam really has an incredible sound to it when at about a 600rpm idle!!
Im surprised you dont have a place to vote for rotary engines. The real life 787b sounds sooooo sick in person. I have only heard videos of it at idle then revved up and wow!! 👍 :dopey:

The most amazing mechanical sounds I've ever heard were at the high-bank oval at Daytona during the 24 Hour race. There's something about how the oval just holds in the sounds. You just don't get the massive reverb at Sebring or Road Atlanta like you do at a super speedway.

Anyway, over the years I've heard shrieking, silk-tearing Ferrari V12s, thunderous Cosworth, Ford and GM V8s that induce a sympathic vibration right in your diaphram, jet engine 911 turbo GT2s and blatty straight six M3s.

For me, nothing really comes close to a tuned NA race engine. Turbos are all and good; the Audi R8 sounds really cool when it shoots by... IMO, NA motors make the best noises. I can close my eyes and still remember the 333SPs and Ford powered R&S Mk IIIs and the C5-Rs...

A Big Vee Eight. with a supercharger and a butterfly intake. Or just A big Vee Eight.

OK, I really should've said this:
4A-GEU (stock N/A AE86 motor)
4A-GTE (AE92/AE101 turbo)
4A-GZE (AE101 supercharged)

All I wanted to know is how you would tune an engine.

I love Skylines and they come in turbo or naturally aspirated.
I prefer turbo more but still like the 'crisp' and 'raspy' sound of the NA ones. :)

Turbo here as well. It's not even about the sound, it's just the feel.

I drove a turbo Probe, that was the only turbo car I've ever gotten to drive agressively. It was kinda fun to keep that boost needle up there, but I like the rasp of a high-rpm NA motor much better.

But like neon_duke (and a few others) said, nothing beats a hot-cammed, big displacement monster. Even the shifting idle as the motor struggles to set into a lope, just screams power. My friend's 440 Imperial sounds just amazing.

I voted mechanical tuning, watch the NER R32 GTS 2.4 and the R31 House RB30 on the EvoVsImpreza BMI DVD and you'll see what I mean...or should I say, hear what I mean.
