Anyone else notice this...

Before I ask....this isn't a rant or a bash, I'm just curious. This question is geared more toward those of us who actually drive in real life(no offense to the non-drivers). Alright, that being said...has anyone else noticed how....off.....the sense of speed seems to be? When I first started playing, it wasn't all that noticeable due to the fact that that most of cars we start driving, aren't all that fast. Well, once I started getting cars that actually go, it became much more noticeable. Put it to you this way...why does 55 mph look more like 20-25 mph? or 125 mph look more like 65-70 mph? Above 125 mph, I can't speculate...I've never driven faster than that. Whenever I race, whatever the view, bumper cam, cockpit, roof cam...they all seem off. But, at least when you tear down the back straights on De La Sarthe, it looks pretty sweet. I love how everything is total blur. I've been afraid to blink going down those stretches:scared: I noticed it on GT4 as well. Don't get me wrong, I love the game...I was just curious if anyone else noticed this........or am I totally out in left this one this one?

It's the things in your peripheral vision that are lacking. You don't get those cues of going fast cause you can't see things in the corners of your eyes zooming past.

Because your TV Screen lacks what your eyes have. Peripheral vision.

When you're driving fast on the street, you have a lot of markers passing by outside your side windows. This adds to the sense of speed... but on wider roads, this "sense" diminishes, as your peripheral vision picks up less and less markers.

A wide racetrack removes many of those markers. The letterboxing of your view via the TV screen takes care of the rest.

If you want a true sense of speed, use cockpit view. Assign look left / look right to two easily reached buttons on your pad or wheel, then scan from side to side while driving. Putting the game in cockpit view helps give you physical referents to judge the movement of your surroundings against.

Niky had it spot on, also don't forget relativity;

When you're actually driving, assuming you're driving competitively, you're brain is working much faster then it is in your couch in front of the tv, and your getting alot more sensory input, boosting adrenaline and causing everything to seem faster, in addition to peripheral vision and other visual cues like that.

For example, driving an FGT at Laguna Seca (Where I've driven a Formula Ford) it looks and feels like the FGT is slower then the Formula Ford, even though I'm lapping waaaaay faster.

Thanks for the replies guys, appreciate it. I don't know why I didn't think of that.
Niky-I always use the cockpit when I can...however, I did not know that I can assign a look function, that's awesome. Next time I race, I'll be sure to do that. Thanks for the 411.
