This thread is pretty straight forward. It will determine who is ACTUALLY good and who is not. This is just really for people to compare themselves to others. If you're like me, and don't have friends who are really interested in cars and/or Gran Turismo, you really don't have anybody to compare to. Just say how good you think you are, then give us some details. You can go ahead and give racing driver excuses if you think it will affect peoples' opinions.

Details include things like, but are not limited too:
-what driver aids you use (TC, ABS, etc.)
-do you use the driving line (important enough for it's own section)
-how many bronzes, silver, or gold trophies do you have on special events
-how many bronzes, silver, or gold trophies do you have on licenses
-how many attempts did it take you to _____ (insert some sort of event in blank)
-etc. etc. etc.

RULES:
-be honest please, do you really need to lie so you can impress people online that you don't know?
-please don't make fun of anyone (no flaming)
-please don't post anything unless it has to do with the topic
-please don't talk about anybody but yourself overall, if you feel the need to just be positive or give constructive criticism
-pretty much, standard forum rules apply




I'll start
I'm really bad. I thought I was just regular bad before, but now seeing how good some of you guys are, it's clear to me I'm really bad.

I have to use the driving line on all but 3 tracks (High Speed Ring, Daytona Speedway, Indianapolis Speedway). Even with the High Speed Ring, I still sometimes need the driving line for some cars. I mostly use Automatic (AT) and only use Manual (MT) when I can easily win or just to mess around to have some fun. Other than that, I don't bother with any of the other settings, although I'm used to Traction Control (TC) off in GT5P, so I might switch to that soon if I remember. I barely have any gold trophies on any licenses or special events and the golds I have are on the easiest ones. I tend to bump into other cars a lot, sometimes really hard (that's where I'm glad the damage isn't all that realistic). I hit the walls a tiny bit too. At top speed, I always hit the rev limiter (when applicable), although I am using a DS3 most of the time, so it's kind of hard not to.

In my defense though, I don't have my driver's license yet and therefore haven't driven much in real life. That really translates into the game. I love cars, but I suck at racing games and as of now, driving in general. Hopefully when I get better and get more experience, that will also translate into the game.

In licenses and special events, I have primarily bronze medals. I have a few silvers and golds mixed in.

I can not run one lap of the Nurburgring cleanly for the life of me. I need to memorize it to stand a better chance.

I can't pass the Lotus Top Gear event. I can't pass the Sebastian Loeb rally event.

If I really focus and pay attention I can rip off some hot laps even with high horsepower rear wheel drive cars on occasion.

I get my ass handed to me online. Wait... maybe I am not decent and in fact I suck. This thread is horrible for my self esteem.
 
I'm lazy and whatever the setting its on is what i use.

I hate fwd challenges, i hate those cars. Bronze is easy sliver do able but some golds are just plain hard.

I think golds depend on weather the car given to me suits my driving style.

Sounds fairly similar to me. Though I've ran some clean Nurburgring laps and I think I'm closing in on nailing the Lotus TopGear challenge. Managed to finish 8th today so from there on the only way is up.

Seriously, the more you play, the better you get. It's that simple really. I'm already doing stuff now that I thought was completely impossible 3 days ago.

Golding licenses is still way out of my league but I'm confident I'll get there.

I haven't played online yet because I know just like you I'll get my ass handed to me. When you have a job and kids you'll never get as good as people who live in their mom's basement and play 12h a day. But that's ok. I've had that phase in life but right now there's just not enough time.
Maybe we should have a league for people with limited practice time or something :D
 
I think i'm pretty good, above average.

I use a controller, but i've been playing since the original game.

I play with no aids except for ABS = 1.

I can race with many people using a wheel, and most using a controller. I got all silver on the beginner and intermediate AMG challenges, first try. I put this down to thousands of laps of the Ring in GT4. I could easily gold the license tests, but I choose not to. I'd rather just complete them and move on. Might do them later when I need the XP.

And I don't live in my parents' basement playing GT5 all day, I have a full-time job and am a part-time student. :P
 
I am a pretty average GT5 player..

I have all silvers on the first 2 licenses and some golds. It took me 2-3 tries for some silver, and some I've done after about 10+.

I just bought GT5 and DFGT last week, so I'm driving in automatic mode but on DS3 I used to play in manual.

Driving aids, traction control 1, ABS 1... everything else off, and I mean everything.

Online on GT5p I used to be in the top 25% standing in most races..

No driving line (I find it makes me slower actually).

No bronzes on special events. Almost 50/50 between gold and silver I'd say.

No bronzes on licenses either. Pretty much an even split between golds and silvers.

Haven't done much online racing in GT5, but in GT5P I was usually in the top 5 or so.

Whenever I play a friend in split screen though, I completely dominate lol. But that is mainly because they have no interest in sims and they're used to Need for Speed and Mario Kart haha.

I use a pad by the way. I'd love to have a proper G25 or G27 setup but I don't have enough room in my apartment up at college (or the cash to do it right haha).

Amen to that. I am married, have a mortgage, and a full time job, so I can't just sit at home and play all day. We will certainly improve over time like you said. Honestly, I just want to have fun and eventually be able to buy the cars I desire.

Yep! The best part is, the talent/memory ported over to xbox (Forza) and PC (GTRe). But now i'm back where I belong. Doesn't GT5 have the best 'ring ever? Seriously. It's nuts.

Have to agree about the ring, its brilliant.

I think I'm pretty decent when I'm on the ball, I do the Nurb pretty well anyway, and I have a decent concept of how the car works and what I have to do to fix it.

I'm on a DS3, no assists bar ABS at 1, which seems to be the general way of things.

I'm probably above average, it'd be nice to have a time trial leaderboard so I could find out!!
 
I think that I am a decent driver now.
It took me a couple months to complete Mission 34 in GT4.
I used a sixaxis for GT4, but now use a G27 for GT5.
ABS 1 always, and TCS ranges from 0-5, but is mostly 1 for now, with everything else off except for the driving lines for the first few laps of a new track.
I have 50 Golded licenses and need to level up for S.
I have gold for the kart, nascar, top gear and the first two AMG beginner events along with the next step up for karts.
I haven't played online, and am going to probably wait for 100% completion.
GT5 is a lot of fun, but I'm a full time college student, so after this break, I probably won't have much time to play.
 
I use no aids apart from abs1 everything to hardest, g27 clutch and h shifter (unless im really having to push hard then i use paddels) one thing with shifting is the choice and you can learn the gear that you need for each corner and it really helps. Auto can put you into a really low gear and loose time trying to get back to the actual gear once you start leaving the corner, also you dont notice shifting after a while so if you drive auto go manual and stick with it, its so much more enjoyable! I have a thing about the racing line but im not perfect, and can miss an apex every so often. im def not as fast as some, but hold my ground online against fast drivers. (i hate ramming and usually lose out behind a slow driving blocking me and generally being disrespectful. and im not near as fast as the crazy people out there setting god like laptimes haha! but i just enjoy myself. Its not a career its a game. who cares how good you really are, if your enjoying yourself more then the guy thrashing around the track your the winner.

Pretty much this, except substitute a combination of DS3 (for all the licenses) and DFPro instead (since I got it working again). Oh, and golded all but the second Beginner AMG tests first try, and also all of the wet SLR ones first try as well. I spent far, far too much time there in GT4.
 
I've got 30-something Golds in Licenses, but I'm in no rush to get all Golds. I've got all Silvers though.
The only setting I use is ABS=1. If I haven't driven the track in a while, or am using a new car, I'll turn on the driving line, just so I don't accidentally overshoot anything, I hate re-doing races. :)
Special events: All gold on Kart, NASCAR, Rally and Top Gear. All Silver on AMG, haven't done the rest.
I use the controller, though GT5 has made me want a wheel.
I spent 3 hours last night trying to get Gold on the last NASCAR Special Event, I kept losing by milliseconds, I lost by UNDER .010 a few times. :(
 
Just to make sure, I meant no disrespect to those who get to play GT5 for 12hrs a day.
In my highschool and college days I would have done exactly that! :D
 
if 1 was terrible and 10 was awesome driver. i say i would be a 6. im definately not terrible but im not a hack.

i dont use any assists except for abs 1, i drive manual, i wont say how many gold silver or bronze i have on my license because atm i only did what i had to to pass.

Ive got Gold on all challenges in Special events except for the Nurburgring in the wet for both cars and 2 of the Italian thingy. Gold Seb Loeb, Kart, Nascar, Rally, Topgear.

im using a Logitech G27, i use a combination of paddle shifters and Clutch/Gears.

i dont use driving lines.

as far as attempts go, i think there may have been 10 attempts at the lotus on the top gear test track - first time i finished that challenge i got Silver. have gold.

and probably 80% of all licenses i got on the first go, either bronze, silver or gold.
the only license that almost killed me, and i dont know why maybe im too enthusiastic, was the Leman 24hr S License track, it took me about an hour to even finish.

i only played 2 races online - just to try it out - all drivers in Red Bull C5 Rally car 3 laps on Deep Forest - and i spanked everyone (they seemed serious enough not tools trying to crash)

For me,

-Driver aids you use?: I used ABS on 1, and TC only on a few cars and it's just a 1-2 max.

-Do you use the driving line?: Yes, some tracks I don't know so I keep them. Turning it off is annoying, so I leave it on. If I know the track, I just ignore the line.

-Trophies do you have on special events?: A lot, only hard ones for me are the Nurburing ones. I never liked the track, and not familiar with it. Golds are though, but Silvers are pretty easy.

-Trophies do you have on licenses?: I have got the IB license and they're all Gold. Haven't gone further, but I get only Golds than continue to next one.

-How many attempts did it take you?: Top Gear event 2, took me 30 tries prolly. I was wiped out in battle for first about 5-6 times and it's not fun. Also, the IB-10 test took me like 20 tries. I think It's IB-10, might be IC-10. Cannot remember. But I was always on the guys ass in the end and couldn't take one turn perfectly with the car to get half a car closer.

I am a good driver, 8/10 I would say that has to play with a terrible controller at the moment.

I may not be married or have a job but right now I'm in finals in college so won't be getting the game till Tuesday when I have a few days off and even then won't have as much time as I would like to play.

You are indeed very lucky, I hope you enjoy the game for me since I know you feel my pain and my finals won't end until the 7th.
 
Is it acceptable to use a high TC setting if you're using a controller? I find it almost impossible to drive something like a Zonda with the on/off type of acceleration of a controller. Maybe I'm just a bit crap.
 
First let me say that I should have bought a wheel long ago. I have a DFGT and I really thought I would not be any good with the wheel. I did very well with a controller.
1. Driver aids - ABS -1, no other aids.
2. Use of driving line - No driver line it messes me up.
3 Special events - I've only done the kart racing. It seems to easy I've got all golds here so far.
4. Licenses - I've had trouble with A5 and A8 but got all golds on all 10. I spent aout 3 hours between the 2 to acheive this. Only have done 2 of the liscense's so far, A B. I strive for perfection so I play til I gold no matter how long it takes. I've played every GT game to date and have completed all of them. Usually all the begainner stuff I get all gold. It's later in the game that takes more time to get to that level, but I almost always place 3rd in events. Gotta say I love using a wheel, I'm actually alittle better using it then the controller. It just feels natural. Happy driving all.
 
I'm an average GT5 player imo.

Using the DFGT, i turn off all aids besides ABS at 1.

I do use the driving lines but eventually i'm going to turn them off, i really only use it atm for tracks i'm not famillar with [most].

But yeah, just need more practice haha.

Though i've only completed the B-License Test, all Gold.

I remember thinking I was awesome at GT2 and raced against a co-worker for money. He made out like a bandit. Sheep never got fleeced as much in a lifetime as I did that night.

Sequels happened and I found myself with GT4 and a Driving Force Pro. Then, GT5: Prologue. Started to feel almost awesome.

When the Time Trial Demo came out, I gave it a whirl for a few days to see how I stacked up against the rest of the USA. I ranked in the neighborhood of 5200. Spectacular.

For GT5, I carried over preferences from past GT games. No driving assists -- turn them all off. Set to Simulation. Force feedback to 10. Managed to get 4 Gold, 6 Silver, and the rest Bronze on my Licenses -- I just do enough at first to pass, then I eventually go back and try to better my times. maybe I'll do that after completing A and B-Specs in GT Life, and the special events.

My comfort zone as far as performance cars is anything around 300 ~ 500 hp. My reflexes just aren't that sharp when I'm rocketing towards a 180° hairpin in an 900 hp monster at 230+mph. I was feeling pretty good about myself, piloting a 425 hp '91 NSX RM through various challenges. Maybe I should hop online and play someone for money after I do a few more offline races.

Confidence was high. Everything was going fine until I had to pilot a Toyota 88C-V for that whatever championship with all the Le Mans racecars. What a handful. Bring up the options... Traction Control set to 1, and ABS set to 1. Not enough to baby me, mind you, but just enough to not want to put a DFP through a 52" television or kick my dog. Just kidding, Kobe -- you know I'll only ever punch you in the face. I even had to turn ASM on for the Nordschleife.

Then, I struggled with NASCAR. I mean come on... how the Hell hard is it to turn left, anyway? Well, it's pretty damn hard when you're on your roof, I tell you what. Wallet back in pocket.

TL;DR: I'm a painfully mediocre driver in the GT series.
