My name... is Michael Fassbender. For the last five years, I was stranded in Hollywood development hell with one goal: to make this movie...

And now, I'll fulfil every gamers' dying wish: make a half decent video game based movie.
To do this, I must become someone else, must become...something else.

Filming commences next week Monday in Spain. Co-starring Marion Cotillard, here's a brief synopsis of the film itself:

"Callum Lynch (Fassbender) discovers he is a descendant of the secret Assassins society through unlocked genetic memories that allow him to relive the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. After gaining incredible knowledge and skills he’s poised to take on the oppressive Knights Templar in the present day."

Thanks, Yahoo! movie news.

Here's hoping for the first genuine non-sucky video game movie. (Yeah I know I said that already...)

Will update more if there are "leaks" like that of Suicide Squad set.

Edit: August 28, 2015 - In a tweeter ask & tell session, head of Assassin's Creed "content managing" at Ubisoft Aymar Azaizia stated the movie shares the universe along with the games, comics and books.

Not a big piece of news, but it's worth mentioning 'cuz... wait, there was a AC comic? Really? I didn't know that...:boggled:

Edit: October 10, 2015 - Courtesy of SlashFilm, Ubisoft says this flick will be "like Batman Begins."

Edit: December 11 2015 - Leaked set photos, via ScreenRant.

Edit: December 27 2015 - Mr. Fassbender isn't much of a gamer, it seems...

Edit: January 16 2016 - Principal photography for the film has wrapped on 15th of Jan.

Edit: March 4 2016 - Apparently, the sequel has been green lit already.

Edit: May 12 2016 - New Trailer, plus a tease poster!!

I suspect you'll have to preorder the cinema tickets or miss out on about 15% of the film. A further 10% of the film will be released gradually as DLC in weeks 2, 3 & 4 of the cinema run, but you'll need to pay £5 more for your ticket per installment.

The DVD/BluRay release will come with a single use DRM code that locks the disc to your device so it cannot be played on any other device - after making you get a UPlay account to watch it in the first place.

You so mean...

I think that if any series can do it, it's Assassin's Creed - the world of the game is diverse enough and flexible enough that it would allow for a multitude of stories to be told without being completely beholden to the source material. Going for a 15th Century setting - I'm guessing the Reconquista - is a smart move because it's not something that the games have covered.

...I believe this too. If there are game-to-film adaptations with any hope of being decent experiences, this and Warcraft are the likely candidates.

The signs are good too, seeing that Ubisoft went out of their way to retain creative control, and they delayed the filming by almost a year just to polish up the script.

If this turns out to be a great film, who knows, we might even get a slew of decent video game movies now on, and never mention the likes of "Doom", "Mario Bros" and "that Street Fighter film with Lana Lang from Smallville"...

I have to wonder if television wouldn't be a better format. There's a lower budget, sure, but a much broader format. For instance, I think Grand Theft Auto would really work as a television series.

The trick is that things which are awesome in a game don't really work on film because they hinge on directly engaging the player when a television audience is a passive bystander.

It'll also be poorly optimised for certain cinemas with film tearing and juddering frame rate. IMAX will have forced parity with regular cinemas to "avoid debates and stuff".

...As a mini-series with a tightly controlled season structure, it coud work. Although, my personal preference do lean towards 2-hour cinematic experiences rather than 6, 7 or 10 hours spread out into multiple parts.

As far as making money goes, though - the bean counters probably know going down the silver screen route to be the safer return on investment. And this is Ubisoft we are talking about - dude, they've got bean counters!! :D

The catch is that they need to strip it down to two hours first. They need to teach audiences about the nature of genetic memory and how the Animus works and the Templar-Assasain conspiracy, plus have two separate timelines. That's a lot of stuff to cover.

Assasins Creed is an average "game" so should be no problem adapting this into a half decent flick, the outfit looks a bit skinny though.

the outfit looks a bit skinny though.
They've always tried to go for outfits that reflected the time period. I think leaner is better, since some of the more-recent ones have gotten a little too elaborate. As has the tech; the grenade launcher in Rogue was a bit much.

Maybe it'll look better in motion, but it's I can't breath tight from my eyes.

Another question would you prefer them to focus a bit more on 'present day events'?, I feel they've handeled that pretty poor in the game.

...I hope not. The most interesting bits in AC games always are the Animus stuff, not Desmond mucking about.

Oh, and there's something else I wonder: will they use English in 15th Century Spain? ...That'd be weird, especially with faux-accent Hollywood likes to saddle the actors with.

...Huh, on a second thought, maybe they will end up speaking English after all. All the AC games so far was in Queen's Tongue anyways...:indiff:

Don't forget, we have to climb up the cinemas to unlock portions of the movie. Helix Credits can be used to reveal all of the movie's major plot points (requires real-world money for micro-transactions).

AC III was the only one that wasn't great. Granted, I haven't played ACU, but I don't think it's been done that poorly.
Unity, plot wise, is pretty good, but the bugs make it the worst game in the series.

That said, I'm pretty excited with what they put out so far...

A small update:

...I'll place the link in the OP.

Hardly been a few weeks since the shooting began, and the marketing begins (in earnest?). Not as intensely as the Suicide Squad movie, but still.

The chances of it being good is 0 or at least in comparison to the games.

There is no new experience you gain by watching a Movie based off a Game in fact, I can say it takes away the proper experience since you are no longer in Control of actions and are just sitting there watching it instead. You might as well just watch a Walkthrough Video.

...Oi, aren't you a downer. :irked:

I believe that a game based movie should not try to shoe-horn what works in the game - as you say, a game is an interactive experience, where you make the decisions and the progress.

A movie is a passive form of entertainment, we're just along for the ride.

Thus, if you wanna create a good video game movie, you gotta disregard all that video gamey things and concentrate on telling a good story.

And yeah, it's not possible to please everyone, so might as well not even try; just focus on a singular objective of making a good movie.

As far as watching a Walkthrough vid, I tried that before, and boy, those guys couldn't play worth a damn!!

The issue is though, Video Game stories are not suited for Passive Entertainment as what makes a Story in a game so good is because you are a character experiencing it. I have a lot of games that I can praise for its story but seeing it as a Passive Entertainment just really downgrades it from its true worth.

In order for it to work, they would have to re-work the entire story which will likely annoy the majority of the fanbase.

Doom would like to have a few words with you.

That doesn't mean that you are right though.

...?? So you're saying I'm off my meds or something? I don't get it...
I'm just saying that there was one adaptation that tried to immerse the viewer in what the actor was doing. In that respect, Doom was a very underrated film.

...Oh.

However, Doom was not a "very underrated film". It was just plain sucky-bad!!!
If you are referring to that FPS scene almost at the end, that was kind of like "trying to add pearls to a muddy swine". And even then, it felt contrived and slow.

You could've come up with a better example, you know. :irked:

Many non-game movies use POV mode too - hell, even porn, too!!
