AC may not run quite as well on the PS3 (I don't have it yet) as on the 360 but that doesn't really explain why some people are using the game as a blunt instrument to damage the PS3's credibility. I can only assume that any excuse is good enough for some to let their fanboyism all hang out.

The reviews seem generally good though.

I would just say that PS3 ooptimisation has nothing to do with Sony/ PS3hardware, but with Ubisoft's programmers. And fact it would take few months to optimise the code for PS3, while game was already 6 month behind the schedule.

Guns don't kill people, people kill people.

:D

No, its because they're from Canadaland. But it could also be because it was 6 months behind schedule, lol.

:sly:

Is there going to be a collectors edition for PS3? Like with a tin also? :scared:
Just picked her up today while on the hunt for an early release of Uncharted:

It looks great, especially for just $10 more, but it also says it comes with a mini-strategy guide, but if it did, it must be microscopic, as I can't see it. :D

D-N You will have to review this game for everyone on here because you usually have the same opinion as me for most games and you arent very biased. So me getting AC may depend on what you think about it!

It may be a while though... my weekend is crushed right now and then were off on a family vacation... and with all the young nephews around I don't think Assassin's Creed would be an appropriate game for them to see, let alone play. :D

When I get back in a couple weeks I'll try and give it a thorough run through. 👍

Ya I dont think a leaping stab to the throat is exactly appropriate for younger children. No rush on the review though, people have things to do plus I have CoD4 online to hold me down, I can also just go out, rent it, and see for myself.

I never thought I would be a terribly sensitive person regarding what my kids watch, but after they were born, I'm affarid I have become one of those way over protective dads. :nervous:

They are very young right now, so maybe I'll lighten up as they get older. :)

That's what I would do any way. After all, the best critic in the world will always be ourselves. Much of the reviews you read these days are 90% subjective personal opinion... and you also never know how much their personal opinion is also influenced by some form of bias.

There's some serious issues with this game. It's been crashing on me once every hour, sometimes more. Weird ones too where it freezes yet you still control the camera.
This game needs a patch. There's a thread at the official forum forums.ubi.com so they are aware of this. Maybe it's PAL related or related to version 2.00 firmware. Whatever the reason it's seriously dampening my fun in an otherwise excellent game.
But there are problems with frame rate and tearing. Added together I think the 360 version should've been my choice.

The strategy guide should be inside the disc case, on top of the game manual.

I understand the AI is somewhat screwy (I've seen, in a review video, stealth killing a guard in full view of another guard just metres away AND facing your direction and utterly ignores you...
The idea being that they don't know that you killed him. When you stealth-assassinate someone, they don't fall over right away, they waver for a few moments before falling over, giving you a chance to step away from them before they fall. The guards opposite the lane don't react until they see the guy fall down, at which point you're already ten feet away amongst a bunch of citizens. It's not perfect, sure, but I don't recall that sort of thing being done before, so take it for what it's worth as a first attempt.

Bear in mind that the kill has to be stealth.. if you do it in High Profile mode, you'll catch the immediate attention of everyone around you.

Well, it IS rated Mature.. hehe. Blood, strong language, and violence. Yes, language.. they even drop the F-bomb. That caught me off-guard, but I applaud the fact that they didn't try to censor it down for the ninnies out there.

I've played through for some time now, just finished my third assassination, and I think this is one of the most intriguing and satisfying games I've played in a long time. I'm a big fan of open-ended "sandbox" games, and I'm really enjoying the degree of freedom the game gives you when moving about the environment. I'm trying to play the game in a "realistic" fashion, taking my time, staying stealthy, not just powering my way through it the way a game reviewer would (read Gabe's statements on Penny Arcade to understand where I'm coming from). I just spent almost three hours in Jerusalem before I actually went after my target. Wandered the whole district, hit every view point, saved every citizen, found a bunch of flags, got almost all the investigations (I dislike the flag-fetching missions, but I do all the other ones). Actually made my kill and escape much easier, since I had some of the crowd helping to slow down not only the guards, but my target as well!

The controls do take some getting used to, but once you do, you'll find yourself moving effortlessly across the entire environment, whether in the city streets or hopping across rooftops. The combat is all about timing. I prefer the defensive counter-kills, makes me feel like such a bad-ass to be surrounded by six guards, to brutally slaughter five of them inside of a minute while barely lifting a finger, then have the sixth guard run away screaming.

On the graphics side, I'm a big fan of realistic lighting, and I've been quite pleased to see more and more developers taking advantage of it. AC is one of the best examples I've seen of proper lighting, of having that sharp contrast between dark shadow and bright sunlight, but without losing any visible detail. The framerate is a tad low if you're looking for it, but it's generally very consistent, which may have been what Gamespot was referring to in their review. X360's framerate may be higher, but it stutters more, whereas PS3's framerate is lower, but stays steadier. There's some tearing here and there if you're looking for it, but it's not very bad, and doesn't detract from the game in any way at all. Don't let the reviews fool you.. the game looks absolutely fantastic, perhaps the best-looking game I own, and remains 100% playable throughout. Anyone who badmouths the graphics performance of either version is just nitpicking.

While I haven't had the consistent problems that Slackbladder mentions, I did have it lock up on me once when attempting to leave Acre and enter the Kingdom. Otherwise, it's been fine.

The story is also getting very interesting. There's more than meets the eye about what's happening in both storylines, and I'm very curious to see where it's going. Sure, I could read about the whole thing online, but I think the best way to do it is to just play through the game. And I have no complaints about doing that. :)

When they say limited edition, how limited?? Does it has a unique number on it or something?... just curious because I may get it but I don't want all the limited ones to be gone by then!

Robin

Limited enough to be sold out at Play.com I believe and I don't think my local Gamestation had any Limited Editions last Friday.
I was thinking of getting it, but with Uncharted out now and Mass Effect out next Friday I need to budget a bit.

I picked this game up for the 360 and I'm really impressed. Some of it is quite repetitive but the size and detail is superb, nothing like I've ever played before. The freedom to roam is excellent and I'm so glad Ubisoft implemented the sandbox feature. I think it's a must buy for PS3 and 360 owners.

The PS3 has always output a brighter signal than the 360. Just calibrate your TV properly, and that "problem" goes away. That should be step one for anyone with a decent TV, right after you power the thing on for the first time. As long as everything's calibrated properly, the two versions are identical in terms of brightness and contrast.

For some reason, the review sites seem too stupid to pick up this simple fact.

Yeah, from that video the only difference other than the brightness is that the framerate isn't as smooth on the PS3.

From what I've seen the game only moderately interests me... probably not enough for me to buy it. Maybe when it's cheaper in the future.

Most irritating things in the game are the cut-scenes which you can't skip (very annoying if you're re-doing an earlier "memory"), the big block texts on the left telling you how to counter etc long after you've learned and you can't turn off and saving citizens who then go on and on and the camera locking to them and the groups that help you (several times I've walked right into a guard because I couldn't see what was going on).
Unnecessarily frustrating and annoying. Along with the freezing it gets me down a bit. Still I generally enjoy the game.

Just thought I'd post this up:

There is supposedly a fix for PS3 owners that have whipped up the highly anticipated Assassin's Creed this weekend only to find it crashing frequently.

Reported earlier, many of the game's bugs on the PS3 version have been (unofficially) linked to the FW 2.0 update, which is said to have been causing all manner of problems since its release.

But according to bloggers, PS3 users can fix some of the issues temporarily simply by disabling the Information Board on the 2.0 FW front-end menu, and disconnecting their PS3 from the (online) PSN while they play Ubisoft's adventure.

This will apparently cut down the frequency of the crashing.

Let us know if it works for you in the comments below, and sit tight for Sony's 2.01 update soon, which should sort out all the problems so you don't have to fool around with system options.

I haven't had problems with it crashing so I haven't tried this out yet. I do, however, have the Information Board disabled.

I've had the game freeze on me once. I have had weird polygons stretching from my character as well as AI in the game. Sometimes stretching to the sky. Makes for spotting soldiers easy.

The camera is annoying sometimes, not able to unlock from characters in the game when you want to, and where he decides to jump sometimes is frustrating. Other than that, I've been enjoying the game and it's layout so far.

I got the game today, and i played it for a solid 3-4 hours since i don't have class tomorrow.

Only froze up once but only after having played for a while. So i assume the system was just a little hot or something. There were some framerate hitches, but nothing serious since running and climbing in this game uses 3 buttons. Just before i quit for the day though, there was a moment after i finished the second memory block where the female doctor was talking at the same time as the male doctor, and she was invisible too. This game has so many trippy elements, i figured that it was part of the game. :D

The voice acting leaves something to be desired though, especially when the dialog just stalls for no reason when one character stops talking and another starts. There are also quite a few butchered accents, particularly French.

BTW, anyone figured out what "glitches" they're talking about in cut scenes? It always says "press any button if you see a glitch." ...Wha?

No idea. I thought it was when there was a memory flash I would hit a key. Thought it just game a different camera angle until I found out that's what hitting a button does, it changes the camera angle in cut scenes. No idea.

That is exactly correct. During any cut scene in game (meaning playing as Altair), if you press a button when the blue hexagon "memory glitch" graphics pop onto the screen, you will get a different camera angle. I'm guessing they added this to the game for 2 primary reasons: 1 - to help keep players paying a little more attention to the cut scenes, and 2 - maybe as some sort of foreshadowing to some as yet unmentioned capabilities of the Animus. As it stands right now the Animus only places you in the shoes of Altair (well 3rd person shoes ;)) but these memory glitches MIGHT hint that the Animus can also reconstruct a memory from a point of view in a completely different location. If true, and let's face it I'm just about blindly speculating here, then it could throw in a whole new dynamic in gathering surveillance in future missions (most likely to occur in AC 2, although I'm only on mem block 3 so I suppose it could come into play later in this one).

Random Altair facts courtesy of Wikipedia (might the 3rd one suggest a plot development?):

* Altair (α Aql / α Aquilae / Alpha Aquilae / Atair) is the brightest star in the constellation Aquila and the twelfth brightest star in the nighttime sky, at visual magnitude 0.77.
* The name "Altaïr" is Arabic for "the Flying", from the phrase النسر الطائر al-nasr al-ṭā'ir "the Flying Eagle".
* In astrology, the star Altair was ill-omened, portending danger from reptiles.

Actually so far I've found the voice acting to be generally of high quality, although I don't have a good enough ear for French accents to know any better. One major letdown is the voice acting for Altair himself. I don't know if the guy is just an overall bad actor or not, but even thought this is only a game, and giving him the benefit of the doubt ,his effort for this character leaves much to be desired.

Edit X2 ------------------
Anybody else notice how incredibly MASSIVE the stored AC game files are on the hard drive?! The utility game data reports in a very hefty 1.35 GB's and the save file is an even more insane 2.83 GB's.

My guess is that they need to install much of the engine on the hard drive to keep new area access times quick and things in general running as smoothly as possible, but does anyone else have a more knowledgeable explanation

Yeah but i was thinking, maybe that's on purpose to highlight the fact that the Desmond guy is reliving all the memories? It's pretty much his voice from the present, but with some olden English words mixed in.

All the cut scenes are supposed to be an uncovered memory fragment right? The animus is supposed to only provide a means of being a puppeteer but not a ventriloquist. So, using the logic of the plot, Altair's voice should be true to that of the life past. Unless I'm missing something, remember I'm only about 20% through the story.

Altair's voice is basically the modern English translation of whatever he would have originally been saying. Otherwise we (or a majority of us at least) wouldn't be able to understand it.

Good point and agreed. And one of the researchers did state that the animus would translate important/relevant speech into modern english. However it makes one wonder why the annoying pleas of the beggars and such are considered important enough to translate.
