tigre_hobbesI don't understand at all.
Autosave is only on US and PAL version am I right?
So the PS2 can manage without autosave in japanese version but can't in other ones![]()
Lucky us then.

Event HorizonI think its there so you can't just buy a car and take it for a spin and taken photos. You have to earn or permanently buy the car in order to take pictures or test it out.
That's just my opinoin.
Why are you guys so peeved about auto-save? Just enjoy the game, and stop looking for loopholes.
luke1500You can only restrict it to save only after buying or winning a car, thats what I understand from other threads at least!

Thanks for that, i was confused as why the game would NEED autosave but this makes it understandable. 👍sukerkinI would guess that Yeti has the right of it here.
As soon as I heard there was an AutoSave 'feature' that seemed to operate at every opportunity (i.e. before switches between screens etc) I thought that either there was sloppy coding at work (from PD ... surely not) and/or the game pushed the memory management beyond it's limits.
Essentially, the PS2 is emptying it's memory bucket prior to loading the next barrel of GT4 goodness and, in order to make sure that nothing is lost, it has no option but dump it to the NVRAM.
It's a poor solution but I guess the chaps at PD didn't have much option given the hardware platforms limitations. We'll just have to live with it ... like we have a choice ROFL!
Warp3From what the in-game info says, "Restricted" mode only saves when you enter a different car. So, in theory you could sell several cars (assuming you aren't in one of those you sell) and even race a few times and it wouldn't save, but the instant you hop into a different car...voila...autosave. I'm running mine in "restricted" mode right now and the only time I see the memory card logo in the top right corner is when I manually save it or I use the "Get In" function to change cars.
Which gets me thinking, I wonder if the actually purpose of forced autosave is not for saving memory for the garage (since there is negligible info to actually need stored there since 90% of it is pointers to game data anyway), but rather detailed data that is preloaded about the car you are actually in. But if this is the reason, I'd much rather had them use a dedicated "temp file" on the memory card to handle this scenario rather than force the autosave function on us.
Rport03Well you cant really buy a car and hook it up and test drive it then reload, because if you put it on restricted and you buy a car and "get in it" theoretically (sp) it should autosave, I dont remember if it did or not but if it doesnt then hey it works. Anyways I personally dont care right now. In GT3 I played the game, bought cars, tuned them and raced. Only after a long while and had lots of money I started buyign cars and tuning them up and just raceing them around on the test runs that where in your home. Dont like how they took that out in GT4 but ehh oh well. So IMO it doesnt bother me, and I wont complain about it, I just play the game and yea in life you can test drive a car first but eh this is a game, they did it for a reason and we need to live with it. I say just keep playing, build up your money and then buy cars and hook them up. We cant do anything to chance this so just play them game and accept the fact that its in the game and were stuck with it.
9000RPMI don't understand why people complaing about auto save? When it is in restricted mode you can buy a car tune it see if you like it. If you don't like it then just go to main menu and reboot. Remember in restricted mode it only saves when you sell cars not buy.
NissanKoreaCEOedit: take out your memory card if you want to take a car for a spin (and don't want to save), reset when you done playing. I think it works. but don't take out while game is accesing memory card![]()
syclone538If you have a memory card in you can not get in a car without it saving the game, and if you dont have a memory card in it will not let you get in a car.
The only way I can think of is to have a 2nd memory card that has a GT4 save on it that you don't use so you can put that card in when you dont want it to save, but i havent tried this yet.
Edit bold/font size as many people seem to misunderstand that "restricted" does not mean "off"
Thanks for pointing this out! 👍syclone538If you have a memory card in you can not get in a car without it saving the game, and if you dont have a memory card in it will not let you get in a car.
yetiI think that the Auto-Save Feature is purely part of the new Functionality...
I think that it might be due to the fact that the garage is now huge and holding all the memory of all the cars and settings in it is impossible on the PS2 (Especially when attempting to render the Ring!)

BerinGyeah when i switched cards.. it said that it wasn't the right memory card or game and to put the proper memory card in..
cttchris24I agree, I think it's good, not bad. But it's how you look at it, but it does stop people from getting cars to test them out before actually having to buy them. I like it.
sirlosealotNo, I don't buy that at all. When the game is rendering the race tracks it only needs 1 car out of your garage - the one you're driving. All the AI cars come from the disk.

the InterceptorThanks for pointing this out! 👍
Some people seem to say "What's up with you guys? Auto-save is cool!" without actually knowing how it works.![]()
