they prob dun HAVE to put the data back to the Memory Card everytime.... but i guess they just dun want people playing like 50 races all with different car settings and overload the small amount of RAM the PS2 has.....
it'd be cool to try that on JPN/CHN version and see if it crashes... :P

i am using the restricted autosave feature.
The problem i have is when my 9 year old son wants to play, i have to keep an eye on it, so he doesn't use up my hard earned credits to buy stupid crap or worse sell my hard tuned cars for 5000 credits! it sucks! and say goodbye to my win/lose ratio.

that's what arcade mode is for...... ;)

or you can get another memory card... :nervous:

Used Arcade Mode before I bought cars I want in GT Mode saved automaticlly then right after I add mods worry free Autosave is my buddy in GT4.

I don't like it at all.

There's no reasonable excuse for not having a disable feature, just as there is no reasonable excuse for not having a clutch.

I, of course will have to deal with it to enjoy GT4, but I would prefer this nonsense be left out of future PD Racing titles.

Yeti, you've always been a pretty cool character on GTPlanet. And with your claim in the first post, I think there's some great credibility to it. Even with a dual-layer DVD, or whatever it is, I think this helps rather than hurt your GT4 experience. So I think you made a good call.

I see that you haven't actually TRIED it.. it IS in Restricted.. also did you not notice that it says Restricted instead of OFF

Please try it.

BerinG I have done it many times bought a car mod it drove it didn't like it reboot and money goes back to pre-purcahsed. In restricted mode it only saves when you sell the car and there is no way to turn off auto save completely. By the way I have the asian chinese version what do you have?

Thanks for pointing this out!

Some people seem to say "What's up with you guys? Auto-save is cool!" without actually knowing how it works.
That doesnt make allot of sense. It doesnt matter how it works if a person thinks its cool.
Of course it matters! How can you judge a feature when you don't know how it works? Some people here assume you can work around the auto-save function and therefor say that they like it. But they don't know that you can't, and if they knew they'd probably say they don't like it.

What I am trying to say is: before you can judge something you must know all sides of it! Example: how can you say "A (real life) Supra drives like crap!" if you haven't driven one?

Cheers,
the Interceptor

This thread is typical of many I've seen since the dawn of Gran Turismo time. When we debate some puzzling aspect of the games, we're a bit like believers trying to see into the mind of God. Some of us follow blindly, coming up with convoluted arguments to justify our faith in the Maker. Others are sceptics. We're splitting into denominations (within the same church) and having the occasional holy (flame) war. We're all basically guessing.

My point being...wouldn't it be good if someone from Polyphony came online occasionally for a moderated Q&A session to explain some of Mr Yamauchi's design decisions?

It wouldn't have to be KY himself. I don't know how good his English is. He might be too busy thinking up another version of the game (Gran Turismo for Dogs!). Perhaps one of the people in charge of localisation could take on the job of communicating with us. Has anything like that ever happened? We get the occasional morsel of information from magazine/online interviews with the great man, but it's not enough.

Look at what happens with the PC equivalent of GT (in terms of fanaticism and sales figures): whenever a new Sims or SimCity game comes out, various people on the design team submit themselves to gamers' questions, and answer them comprehensively. This even happens while the games are in development. We can then understand why certain things are left out, and other things are implemented in an apparently dumb way, because the developers communicate with us.

I realise KY doesn't work that way. He makes games to please himself; it's just lucky that millions of us love what he does. He doesn't need the sort of feedback that the Sims/SimCity people depend on. But from my side of the fence, it sure would be nice to get more information about the GT creation process.

PS: 12 days to go!!!

Definitely a good point jsnich... It would be very useful and would also calm down some of the hysteria about "Bugs" and other such items if they came online and informed us about what we'd all found and why.

At first this made me mad, but at least not everyone got screwed by autosave as bad as we did.

If I read all this they better skipped the auto save function again.

Imagine your friends or family come and play or they want to see that specific car tuned then you actually can't show it to them because it saves every move you make and would ruin you progress.

It's a pitty that the Hard disk isn't sold here in Europe. The 8MB memory card isn't enough if you have other games aswell.

What you can do if its not a really expensive car is buy the car, get in (game saves) mod the car, and test the car, then reset your ps2. That way you only lose the $ for buying the car but not the $ for modding the car. yeah it sucks but at least you only lose 30,000-50,000 instead of ~250,000.

Autosave would be great, but only if i'll be able to save game on 2nd card and then load without reboot. This simply trick doesn't need any more memory and it was in GT3. So it would be simple and user friendly. I like to play 2 player battle when me and my opponent each have 500000Cr, and you can buy car and tuning for that. Now it will be pain in the ass.

I've been playing GT4 all day and I decided to mess around a little bit. I went to all of the "Save Options" and changed them all to "restricted." I sold all of the cars I could and bought a Supra, built it up, and played with it a little. I then reloaded the game to start back where I left off but instead of having all the stuff I had saved before, I found the garage the same as how I left it just before I reset ----- with only 6 cars instead of my original 87!!!! I did not save before I reset the game yet somehow, the "Auto Save" must have kicked in again. Has anyone else had this problem?

I eventually restarted the game, brought over my GT3 credits and licences because I was so frustrated and now I'm slowly building back up to where I was. I am, however, VERY dissapointed.

the game auto-save whenever you sell cars... even in Asian versions.... and even if you turn auto-save to "off" or "restricted"

the two options you have in Asian version were "Auto-save On" and "Auto-save when selling cars only"
so u've been warned... 💡

Auto save is only bad for the people who cheat and do the last race of a series over and over to get the car they want. Or people who like to try before they buy. This isn't my oppinion, its a fact, that this feature makes the game that much more realistic.

Yeah I understand but the feature is still a pain. I used to always do the "Try-before-Buy" thing. Just get the cars, test them, reset your PS2 and there you go, good as new. Oh well, thanks for the info guys. Now I know what to do and not do. GT time!!! CYA!!!

I agree that the reason was to stop the trying of cars and and then not buying them. But Project Gotham 2 had an ingenius idea at the dealership for the cars you test drive them....... huh imangine that 💡 . Instead of PD wasteing time on an online feature that didnt even make it which is fine with me they could have built this feature into the game easily. But i dont know maybe thats just me.

It takes like 3 maybe 4 seconds to save.

If that is too long for you...then I believe some ADD medication may be in order.

Has anyone even said anything about the time it takes to save?
That is not the reason people don't like it.

Just to point out... a couple of people mentioned that the pause was unacceptable and delayed the gameplay.

If you´re so bugged with this autosave thingy, why don´t you just bring over the something-something Cr. from GT3, and not worry that much about Credits?

but cheating, testing the x-theory, and collecting prize cars is my favorite part...

I am not even sure if races will give you differn't cars in this GT4? I have done any of the extreme events yet. So far, each race has given me one car of the same type. Will other races give me 5 cars, cycle them, and land on one at random like in GT3?

I don't do either of these things, yet I have auto save turned off.

Surely the Auto Save can be overcome by having a back up memory card.
If after a session of playing you do not like the auto save results you go into file option in the PS2 and delete the last GT4 file. Copy the Backup to the 2 nd card and start again.
I can not see how this would not work.
