I'm sure it won't be that bad. Maybe I haven't read up on GT4, nor do I own it as of the date of this reply, but what does "Restricted Auto-Save" mean? Does it mean that you save your game whenever you feel like it or something?

Restricted in the US version means it saves when you get in a car, in other versions it means it saves when you sell a car.

Edit
Solid Lifters, did you mean to say restricted instead of off?

Yep. It still saves whenever I get in a car, or when I buy a new car. I have no problem with that.

I think if you just want to buy cars to expand your garage and you have enough credits, you can do that. And maybe if you aren't going to race them, that's fine. But thanks for the explanation on Restricted save.

Well now that I have played the game(U.S. version) for the last week I have realized that its so damn easy to make alot of money from the beginning that it doesn't really matter if the game autosaves apon buying/switching cars. I'm only 5% done and I've managed to keep about $150,000 balance in credits without the GT3 money or using the quick money exploits.

However, I still don't see why this couldn't be turned off completely. Or why the Japanese version doesn't autosave on entering a car but the US version does. Or why they ditched the load feature. If they eliminate an element of gameplay that many people used in the past, try-n-buy, the very least PD could have done was add a load feature in the main menu so we could go back to the save after the buy. C'mon, in real life you can uninstall mods and go back to stock so why not in a game?

As for "try-and-buy", there's a lot of people (like me) that don't do it. When I buy a new car, it's not because of how it performs so much as what it is. I don't want to buy a Mustang because it's got whatever power and handles like whatever it handles like... I buy it because it's a Mustang, and to hell with the rest. And I certainly don't need to "try-and-buy" to do that.

As for uninstalling mods... actually, I think this method works out much better in that regard. Sure, in real life, you can uninstall parts and return the car to stock. You can do that in the game, too. But in real life, you've already spent the money on the parts, and that's that. So there's certainly nothing wrong with having it like that in the game.

Besides, in the end it really doesn't matter. It's so easy to earn massive amounts of cash in this game, what difference does it make if you buy a car and it doesn't work out? It'll take you ten minutes to earn that money back. And with a thousand-car garage, it's not like you're going to run out of space anytime soon.

You have a point about being able to uninstall the mods. However, in real life if you reverted back to stock because you were unhappy with the performance from a mod, you could sell the part to try and recoupe some of your loss.

Perhaps I'm just being a pain in the ass or a stickler or maybe both, but eliminating the load feature defies reasonable logic, especially because it was there in the 3 previous titles.

The PAL version isn't out yet is it? If not I doubt many people can answer you question although I hope for your sake that it is like the Japanese version.

I suspect what autosave could be annoying with is the irreversible car wear that seems to be in this game. I don't think I know enough about this as I don't have the game.

I think that it has been released somewhere, I think someone sayed (not in this thread)that he had the pal version, or then I have misunderstood him

hooyeah
if you feel like messing around with a car cant you jsut pull out the memory card? or will the game not run without a memory card...havent tried to yet

No you can't, it will corrupt the memory card and you will end up starting over. I know cause that's what I did. Good thing I just started the game so I didn't really lose much.

2o I agree with you, there are already topics about them. I just said what I thought at the time. I don't have the game yet and this autosave thing bothers me. I'm used to putting in GT3, playing until I'm through, and then saving and quitting. I hope that it only does it when you get in a "new" car, not when I'm just wandering through my garage. It's my opinion that everyone should just play the game the way they want, the way that makes them happy. That's what's best in life, being happy.

Well I intend to plug in the card and play and don't intend to reload or anything. Just having fun is my no.1 priority.

It saves whenever you get in any car, it doesnt matter if its a "new" car you just bought or if its a car that is in you garage already.

It has definitely made me change the way I play. With GT3 you could "tryout" cars, to see what worked best. But with GT4 you better like the car BEFORE you get into it or save. Several different series have frustrated me, trying different cars and set-ups is no longer an option. Wasted 600k on a car that couldn't enter a series (RUF CTR2).

So think before you enter that car. :)

What i do is copy the save to a 2nd memory card, buy and test a car, and if i dont like it i reset (load) with the memory card that i did not buy the car on.

I also checked for the 2 memory card free mod trick, but it doesn't work anymore.

So do you think this Auto Save makes the game more strategic or frustrating?

More strategic ofcourse, you cant go off on a limb and blow a bunch of money and then decide that it was a mistake like in GT3, Isn't it all about being a Man!!! Like I was reading before about all you "MEN' doing GT4 hardcore.

To me its frustrating to the point that if GT5 has it I just might buy an Xbox 2 instead of a PS3.

Its not like GT3 where if you want a car you can just go win it, that way you get the car and more money at the same time. And if it turns out to be a disappointment, so what, you only lost however much more you spent on mods then what you won. GT4 is not like that at all. You can win about 165 cars out of about 750. So to get the other cars you have to buy them, and the best cars cost 4,500,000. That is too much money to spend and just hope you like the car. You can get around this with 2 memory cards but it really sucks that they try to force you to play the game the way that they want you to and not how you want to. Everyone at PD already knows how every car compares to each other so they don’t need to test them, but that doesn’t mean they should try to stop me from testing them.

Not to bring up a totally different topic, but do you think we'll see changes to this Auto Save deal in the online-enabled version of GT4? If yes, even if it means selling the old GT4 for the online-enabled version, would it be WORTH IT just for a better or revised Auto Save?

Why!! Auto save makes you more responsible for your playing!!! No Second chances!!! What you did is what you get , just like in real life. So there is no " um since i lost the race online im not going to save my game and when I win, I will then" which is bs.

Right now would I pay $50 to get rid of autosave? I don’t know, I guess it would depend on how much I could sell the version I have for. But I doubt it will matter much anymore by the time an online version (or greatest hits) comes out, as I’ll probably have all the cars I want by then anyway. But something else the think about, the Chinese version only saves when you sell cars, and I almost never do that.

I want all the cars, so I don't really care if I buy it and it sucks. In GT3 I've got maybe 25 cars in my garage that have been driven. I've only sold the ones that I drove until after the hp drop and bought a replacement. Or raced a series or endurance race to win another. It's a game and I save whatever I do while playing, win or lose, wasted money or not. I just don't like the idea of it saving when I'm just going to see what some new wheels would look like on one of my cars or what kind of upgrades it may need. We have several people who stop by here and they browse through my garage, taking several cars out for a lap or two to see if they can drive it. I strongly encourage this because everyone drives different, likes different cars, etc. If the autosave is cut off, will it still save every time they get in a different car? If it does, I think they've overdone it a bit.

It doesn't save after you look at rims not to me anyway after you purchase a part, buy a car, exit a race, or get your car washed/oil changed.

Autosave sucks because there simply is not enough information about the cars or the races before you buy them. When I started the game, I wanted to enter the Boxer competition, but I have no idea what a Boxer is. Horizontally opposed engine, whatever that is said the racing game newbie. There's so strategy guide out yet, and when I check for the race details all I get are a few choices and then "etc.." What is "etc.."? I have to guess now out of a list of probably 400 available cars as to what's a "Boxer", and then do it again as to what a "Roadster" is? At least GT3 gave me the list so I knew what to choose from.

Of course the Boxer race is just one example. Unless you're a car expert, many cars you try to buy have incomplete information, so you have NO idea if the car can be fitted with racing brakes, carry a wing, be NA tuned, or be able to hold a supercharger. Because of this it's just trial and error, and if I choose incorrectly, I just have to (at a minimum!) waste 10 minutes B-speccing something at 3x speed to get back exactly where I started from.

GT4's autosave is a design flaw in the game, just like "etc.." in race selection, the CPU's endless gas and extreme tire efficiency in B-spec mode, and the lack of detailed information in the car buying process.

I'm currently annoyed because I tried to bring my Camaro SS into the NA Sports Pro race just to find out it's not NA at 500ish HP because it has a supercharger on it, even though my garage told me it was NA and not Supercharged. I won the Camaro a while ago and it's stats were not fresh in my memory. Sure, no harm done, it was just another waste of time going back and forth (with autosave delays!) due to GT4's lack of information.

My other latest autosave fiasco involved finding a good car which gave me about 30-40 Aspec points for the Japanese championship. I don't want to blow through a race getting 3 aspec points but I can't afford trying out 20 combinations of cars trying to make it challenging but not impossible. If I had autosave, I wouldn't mind firing up a Civic, checking Aspec on the first race, restarting, upgrading to a Skyline, but not necessarily a highly tuned Skyline, etc.

This week, I'll be tearing apart my save game information and figuring out the right places to hex edit in order to add a trillion credits to my game. Sure, it's cheating, but I can already gain unlimited credits, 110k at a time, by B-speccing the Tuned Cup with a 700HP Skyline. At 27% completion I'm certain I have at least 1 million in wasted cars or wasted car upgrades in my garage. Properly tuned cars running in the right B-Spec races makes money a non issue but since that's just pure busywork I'll skip that step.
