Auto v Manual

You got to try MT for one than one lap.

I was the same way. I said I cannot do this. But then I tried MT on the GT Academy trial demo before GT5 even came out.

Once I beat my AT lap by .500, I said, wow....this is only the beginning.

I was in the same boat, but eventually I got the hang of manual.

And after driving a real life car in manual, GT5 is a piece of cake.

If your a drifter too, a manual is a must.

I'll just add my two cents.
I use a DS3. I feel that I can race with manual no problem. But sometimes in certain situations, I personally feel Auto is a bit faster. If I'm racing an LMP or F1 car with no aids, then Manual won't even be a debate to me, its FASTER yes, its a lot easier to CONTROL the car yes, and it even a lot nicer on tire wear because of downshifting. But when I race slower cars like 500pp races, I'd usually use auto if the car I'm using is controllable. It puts me in the right gear when I'm slowing for turns and only assuming I'm driving a car that is easily controllable, I don't have to worry about oversteering and spinning out. Also sometimes in races where the options for all driving aids are allowed. Then I'll be using Automatic.

If there is a turn that requires to go 90mph, automatic transmission will put me in 2nd gear, If I know that my car has a ZERO chance of spinning out because of oversteer, I'll be using automatic. If my car is less stable and I need to be in a higher gear, then I'll use manual. Why should I put myself in the right gear when the car can do it for me right? (Assuming it won't spin out) Thats just my experiences.

I only started using a manual mid-way through Gran Turismo 5 Prologue. I was trying to learn to drift, but I was never too good at it. I took some pretty desperate measures to get better, including the switch from auto to manual. Needless to say, I a much faster driver now.

The experience just gets better with a h-shifter and clutch pedal. ;)

In some ways using the manual is kind of like cheating to me. What I'm talking about is any challenge were you are in a car that's really overpowered for the the tire restrictions in place. It's definitely harder to drive with the auto & no aids than it is to drive with the manual & no aids. The auto requires much more throttle control than the manual. Deliberately keeping the manual in too high a gear is a poor man's traction control. CHEATERS!:trouble:

Try changing your shifting to the right stick. (if you are using ds controller. this has done wonders for my driving. Up to shift up. down to shift down.

wow.bit delusional.

Are you seriously being serious?

You know after driving a kart or something, it will make the default option auto? Well that happened once and I accidentally drove with auto and couldn't believe how much harder it was to slow down without control over the gearbox in this game lol. I don't know how people can drive 'quickly' with auto.

This shows that the gear you are in affects how the car handles. Personally I think they need to solve this issue because I love go-karts in this game. It's just too bad I have to keep changing my transmission after I drive one.

Please tell me that you are not being serious here. Using manual is not a cheat because it's what most of the cars in GT5 actually have in real life. Plus I haven't heard of a race driver who uses automatic in their car yet. If for whatever reason I am wrong, then name one race driver that uses automatic in their race cars. And bring proof with you while you do it. Only an American would say something like this.

So you mean taking advantage of the what is basically entire point of a manual transmission (the bit where you control what gear the car is in to fit the situation) is like cheating in your eyes?

I find steering is cheating as well, fancy turning the wheel and the car generally goes in that direction, it's an outrage.

All I can say is that anyone who drives better with AT probably isn't a very good driver. Understanding how gear change affects the physics of a car is all part of real life driving. This is especially true on complex tracks is a Turbo charged car, where keeping the Turbo on boost is an added challenge to racing. The way I look at it, AT makes it a game, MT makes it a driving challenge. The "poor mans traction control" comment is rather bizarre, because traction control in manual is down to the foot on the throttle. In AT the torque converter is doing most of that work for you. So in effect the opposite is the case.

I would disagree with your opening sentence, I know a couple of Auto only players and they are quick. But agree with the rest of your post.

Epic sarcasm! Although only a hardcore drag racer would say that.

What this guy said. Using manual isn't cheating because it's all part of the art of car control.

Me, use sarcasm? Never.:sly:

So if you was being serious in your stupid comment then apparently we're all cheaters, right? Unless you can somehow complete a race without touching your steering wheel.

 I suppose if you're going to venture into the GT5 section, you might as well give the rest of us a laugh. 👍

Me personally, I have no problem with someone who drives with either, it's whatever floats their boat. :)

Hmmmmm I always use Manual Trans since i started GT5. Never really tryed Auto. I think Auto is for the people that just stated GT5. When Manual is for that hardcore racer that wants to get every RPM he can get without losing speed.

Auto or Manual, it's down to personal choice. But to call out using a manual as cheating, is quite frankly, ridiculous.

I just came across a thought. Does the time that you change gear affect how your car accelerates? Shifting from 2k rpms when you redline at 7 obviously will be slower but I'm talking about shifting at, say 6k rpms compared to redlining the shift.

Hi all I am really struggling with some lap times, for example World Gran Turisimo.
I feel that I have done a perfect lap, only 2 be 1 or 2 seconds short each time.
I am always on Auto as I struggle with Manual.
Are some of these races or challengers impossible on Auto ?

Thanks again.
Nino

It could be something besides your transmission choice. Are you using any driving aids? Usually turning them off helps you achieve faster laps.

If you shift at the peak of the torque curve, you will accelerate faster, this peak isn't necessarily on the redline though.

Its a case of checking the set up page, it shows the torque curve in relation to revs, just work out where the peak toque band is and use the transmition to keep in that band. It sounds a little complicated but once you get used to it it makes driving much more pleasurable. And you'll start customising transmissions to help you.

I know that. That's why I mentioned it.
